do most switches go through phases or does it depend on who they are with

Well, I don't know about "most switches" but I'll give you my opinion.
Yes and no/no and yes. [;)]
This, of course, will vary according to who you ask.

I notice, OP, you identify as a switch....how would you answer your own question?

*ETA.....OP, you say "phases" and I think lunar...moon-like.  I've always joked that I was raised by wolves...maybe they were werewolves [8|]

i thought that i responded to people, but i think i really respond to triggers. in my experience so far, just because someone identifies as a dominant doesn't mean that i will respond to them submissively. they have to be dominant enough, for one, to overwhelm my natural "one up" mechanism, but on top of that, they usually have to present some kind of special lure or allure. so far, it's been that the Dom, let's say, will suggest something that we could do that would require me being submissive and that i find really hot... trigger pushed, and i'm in submissive mode. similarly, my fantasies have been pushing my dominance triggers lately, and so there here i am looking for a boy to call my own. :) for me though, definitely it does not come in phases or cycles. even switching within a scene involves a trigger, and then i can switch on a dime.

For me I doubr that it is 'phase' oriented.  ALthough mostly sub, there are some people that I just feel dominant towards.  I don't like switching roles with one person, so I guess it depends on the person.

But now this will cause me to lose sleep ... is it cyclical switchery that causes me to look for certain types of partners?

Andalusite -> RE: how (4/24/2010 4:25:33 PM)

For me, it depends on the person. So far, I haven't reacted with dominance and submission toward the same person, but I can switch top/bottom if they are interested.

Applauds Beej's observation on triggers playing a important role in the decisions to switch gears, this life style is all about theatrics and psychodrama. as Switch's the pallet you have to choose from is limitless so listen to the inner desire and go with the flow. Some days wake up and so darkly hungry it's frightening others so confuse that directions are just what the Doctor ordered
