one like both actually..... sometimes it is very nice to be gagged (as well as blindfolded), as the lack of control is finestkind when one is with a One she feel she can trust to know her well enough to be able to 'read' any signs that she is having difficulties during a 'scene' or who provides an alternate source of 'communicating with Him/Her' when buffy is experiencing problems, such as using a small rubber ball which lights up (which one Incredible Dominant used), when buffy lets it fall out of her hand. one can still scream but the cries are muffled within the gag (if its a good gag).
On the other hand, its really great to scream bloody murder at times too, as a primordial response to pain, especially when that pain is something one absolutely loves rather than the not-so-great pain one associates with say, burning one's hand on a hot burner (one also scream bloody murder at those times too, just to clarify that).
Sometimes one will play with a Dominant who will specify silence during the scene and may say that He or She does not allow gags.
This then becomes something of a challenge to buffy and part of her involvement with the scene is taken with ensuring she is obedient to the stated desires of that Dominant, rather than letting herself 'go'.
For buffy, the obedience is a very enjoyable thing too, just a different response than the letting-go-and-screaming response. one wonders what the eventual 'Owner' will decide she should do.

From a sub's point of view ..

I don't like safewording (unless it was absolutely necessary, in which case you'd hate not to have one). So, for me providing "verbal feedback" to the woman dominating me in the form of moans, gasps, grunts, heavy breathing, etc., is really how I tend to communicate how far she's climbed up my pain threshold and how far she's pushing my limits. Therefore, I try to remain pretty quiet during the lighter portion of any session, and let the verbal reactions start, and build, as the sensations become more intense and/or harder to bear.

I know some people provide coded feedback (the "green, yellow, red" cues). I've always thought that sounded forced and artificial. I think it also turns too much control over to the sub-- it's like he's directing traffic and the domme is simply following his directions.

"Real" feedback- -the involuntary gasp, groan, yelp-- is much a more authentic indicator.

mmmmmmmm i like a hand clamped tightly over my mouth better then a gag. just like i perfer daddy to hold me down to being tied . i do like gags and bondage i just perfer the hands on aproch sometimes daddy likes to here me sqweal .and sometimes he perfers to have me gaged. it depends on daddys mood and what he wants to do to me. and what reaction he is looking for

I've never been gagged during play. One of the main aspects of what happens between my master and me is the talking and begging that happens. Daddy is very verbal...he likes to ask many questions, describe what he's doing, and it would be hard for me to respond if I were gagged. However, daddy will often say things like, "I'm going to whip you ten times, and you're not to make any noise," or "During this next set, you are allowed to make as much noise as you need to."

Also, as aimtoplease101 said, we don't use safewords, so my noises are my way of communicating with daddy. He uses my moans, cries, and eventually screams to judge how far we've gone and how much farther to push.

I've occasionally said that I play primarily by sonar. The yelps and moans are my guideposts. And it's all about making the submissive lose as much control as possible, for me, so pushing them into involuntary sounds is a part of it that I could never give up.
