This will come as a shock to no one (including neocons). These people will roll around in sewage to pad their flimsy resume.

Fox News Caught In Massive Nielsen Ratings Fraud

This week saw the release of the quarterly ratings performance data for television programming. Much of the reporting on this story focused on the dominant position Fox News retains in the cable news sector. As has been the case for several years, Fox News smothered the competition and experienced rapid growth while other news programmers stagnated or declined.

The answer may be evident in new disclosures of business relationships that call into question the integrity of Nielsen’s data. With the rollout of its People Meter methodology in the early 2000’s, Nielsen entered the high-tech era of TV market research. It was heralded as a major advancement of data collection that would vastly improve the ability of producers, programmers and advertisers to evaluate the marketplace. But as with any upheaval in the status quo, there were skeptics and dissenters. Chief amongst them was Fox Broadcasting, who argued that the new system significantly under-counted African-Americans, a key component of their audience at the time. There was also a question as to the security of the new set-top boxes that would be recording viewer choices. With the introduction of technology comes the risk of miscalculations and tampering. But eventually the complaints receded or were resolved and the new service took its place as the signature survey product for television marketing.

It was during this time, subsequent to the implementation of People Meters, that Fox News began its rapid ascent to ratings dominance. A prudent observer might wonder how this new system came to report so much more favorably for a network that had fiercely opposed its adoption. What transpired tha

Come on brain, did you even read the article? They've got nothing but speculation.

One thing is for sure. CNN will never be accused of that, because no one watches CNN.

DarkSteven -> RE: Fox News Caught In Massive Nielsen Ratings Fraud (4/2/2010 6:16:48 PM)

Do you understand the implications of falsifying viewership data? That's what revenues are based on - an advertiser will pay more for a channel with higher viewership.  Falsifying would be criminal fraud.

I suspect that Fox News has done well by virtue of holding a market niche while the mainstream has been fragmenting.  Note that the new electronic methods of measuring viewership would have been occasioned by the emergence of new channels as well.

Gosh- nice find.  I think Alex will want to know this.

It's rare to see so much conjecture laden in one article, which is a blog posting at that.

You see, liberals agree with freedom of speech unless they disagree with that speech. This is one of many contradiction within the  liberal philosophy that many liberals  don't notice due to their naivety.

What does this even mean? I can't figure out what it has to do with what anyone else is saying. Or is it just that it was a fun thing to blurt out?

I'm going with "fun thing to blurt out" thingamajig ,made no sense ,doesn't speak well for the quality of his education....but he went ahead and said it anyway....lol.What the fuck Panda...if he is an example of the best of the "Young Republicans" the Democratic party has no need to worry about their future.

I seem to remember somebody else around here that likes to blurt things out before thinking them through...

It is not the Repubs that the Dems need to worry about, for that matter the Repubs need to worry about the same folks. Independents. If both sides continue to ignore the folks in the middle, they are in for one hell of a surprise in future elections.

P.S. Did I miss any of the other slurs about those that oppose what's goin on in DC?

Thad you wouldn't be sugessting that I am prone to blurting things out ....would you?
To be sure I know I have never labeled you as..."uninformed,homophobic,racist,tea-bagger"....I'm not sure we're all of this is coming from.....but I am sure I have nothing at all to do with it !

But Thad, there is no "middle" according to Mike. If you don't agree with him you're a "right-wing conservative."
I've been telling him for the last two years that I'm neither Republican nor Democrat but his brain can't fathom how anyone could be like that.

slvemike4u -> RE: Fox News Caught In Massive Nielsen Ratings Fraud (4/2/2010 10:20:24 PM)

Popeye step away from the Jamison's,that statement is patently false....I certainly do realise the middle exists...as a matter of fact I myself reside smack dam in the middle.....you on the other hand, what with your fixation with immigrants and foreign aid and such are a decidedly right leaning wing-nut [:D]

All any conservative needs do is sit back and wait for a liberal to open their mouth.

And yet advertisers keep buying ad time.....I wonder why?

Termyn8or -> RE: Fox News Caught In Massive Nielsen Ratings Fraud (4/3/2010 1:28:35 AM)

To the OP, nothing else ;

Up until about five years ago I worked as an elite tech at a company that fixed TVs and has alot of "Nielson families" as customers. There are many fallacies about this whole process in the first place, but....

Even when people had antennae hooked up, set top or roof, the Nielson box connected inside the TV and monitored the local oscillator frequency in the tuner and derived the channel watched therefrom. It transmitted the data via regular phone line to "the company". (google for hetrodyne for more info)

Now each box is the same, and at least in the beginning they wanted empirical data, REAL data. The "Nielson" families would comply for certain treats, like dogs of course but let's not get into that. They had the benefit of not paying for their TV repairs and we got to charge the "company" up the ..... err very good rates.

So at one time they wanted real data. Has anyone been to marketing school in the old days ? The bandwagon theory. Everybody else is doing it so it must be right, right ? So now they skew the rates of viewership and no longer wnat empirical data, they only want data that confirms them. No surprise here.

Might I suggest a funny movie. Pay attention to the beginning because it can lend a bit of insight into how this works. The movie is :

The Ratings Game

Has Danny DeVito in it and what they did was to get a list of the Nielson families and give them all a free cruise. During that time they broke into thier houses and turned the TVs on to their ill crafted show called "The Gumbas". They beat the superbowl, which is unheard of. They all got busted but it serves to prove a point.

Even radio statioons used to have "the book". It was totally determined by ratings as well as they could tell, but the book was VERY important. It determined how much a radio station could command for their airtime, from advertisers. This is their main source of income, because when you tuned into 92.7 they did not get a check. And your car radio was surely not hooked up to a box.

This gave certain people a vast amount of power if they know how to use it.

They did.
