Martin Luther King's Last Speech - 4/3/2010 9:28:18 AM

Status: offline 		42 years ago today, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; one of the most praised civil rights leaders in U.S. history, gave his final speech in Memphis, Tennessee. It was a Dr. King speech in way, shape, and form: eloquent, powerful, and heartfelt. This one, though, was strangely prophetic. Dr. King always knew he would die young and he acknowledged it in this speech. To me, this was his finest hour and this is my favorite speech of his. Unfortunately, the next morning, he was gunned down in front of his hotel room and died soon after. This country would never be the same, but his legacy lives on. Here now is his final speech.

Status: offline 		An interesting, inspiring and thought provoking speech always worth listening to.  I'm going to try to post something I came across shortly after Obama was elected.  I'm sure King believed it, but perhaps, for knowing the rage of the white man....wouldn't go there, just quite yet?  Because the man who did say it was killed, along with his brother.  In fact...have you ever noticed that most serious advocates for the black man have all been assassinated?

Status: offline 		It is quite telling and very sad. I don't agree with the politics of Bobby Kennedy and even Dr. King; but I will always be grateful to them for what they did for me and future generations of minorities. Dr. King empowered a whole generation of people that didn't even know what empowerment was. He was a beautiful soul, and he died far too soon.

Status: offline 		Indeed he did.  I particularly liked the part in his speech where he said "you can't ride a man if he's standing up straight".  I like it and admire all men who dare to stand up straight.

Status: offline 		I also love how selfless the speech was; but not in a cheesy way. He knows he did good work, and work that he's proud of; but he said "It really doesn't matter with me now." and "I just want to do God's will."

You make a good point, and I hadn't really thought about that before. I wonder what King would have thought of Obama's first year? I'd have to give it some thought, but my initial reaction is that he probably would have been disappointed. Maybe even very disappointed.

Micheal King Jr. was not my leader. A liberal to the core, and I mean if he were President we really would have change. He would buck the status quo. That is respectable even though we disagree. Now if we could get Obama to do that ........

Funny, Bobby Kennedy and two guys go out to Calif. and two days later Marilyn Monroe is dead from an overdose so she doesn't "spill the beans" about her and JFK.
I wonder why some people don't hold up the Gotti crime family the way they do the Kennedy crime family.

If you were intellectually honest with yourself you'd be consciously aware of such facts as Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, Lee Harvey Oswald was a Marxist, Sirhan Sirhan was a Palestinian, Democrats stood in direct opposition to the civil rights movement, and so on.

Status: offline 		Popeye, I hear what you're saying, but I wasn't praising the Kennedy's for anything, just an interesting remark that Bobby Kennedy made, that happened to come true.  And I said it with the same wonder Panda had about how MLK would think of Obama in office.  (I do have a picture with Obama and King on it...the side with King says "I have a dream"; the side with Obama says "I am the dream", but I didn't think it was as fitting.

The reason I say I don't think it was fitting was because King was fighting for a cause and Kennedy made a prediction (of sorts, I suppose) about King's cause.  If you listened to that speech, and most people have, you can almost sense an underlying thought by King (a premonition of his own, if you will) that he was not going to make it through his battle alive (and I refer to the point in his speech where he says "I wish we could march together to the promised land"...and then, very shortly after that..."I have been to the mountain top....Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."  Maybe its just me reading too much into it, but I do believe he knew he would get assassinated.  But his cause meant more to him than his life.

And YOU'D be consciously aware of such facts as Southern Democrats leaving the Democratic Party to become Republicans after Civil Rights legislation was passed--and so on.
