ORIGINAL: OrpheusAgonistes I'm pretty sure The Internet is one big joke, one Infinite Jest, and the best part of the punchline is that it's a joke on absolutely everybody. What I'm going to write deviates from the OP somewhat but also is deeply linked to it. To me, the Internet is a means to an end. I don't expect it to be anything other than a rapid gateway to information, whether that be periodical databases for research, a variety of expert opinions on food and wine paring, finding local movie showtimes or a list of single submissive men in my neighbourhood. I don't live *on* the Internet. I use the Internet to make my life easier, and to a certain degree for information. While I might discuss with people on the message boards, and while I have made some real life friends (even those I haven't met in person but know me, know my real identity, have my personal email and some even my phone number), I don't have this parallel fantasy world on the Internet. I think that is where the danger lies. You are new to the boards, and I barely know anything about you in this short time other than we have similar musical tastes, but you are a real human being on the other side. Now I give everyone the benefit of the doubt at first. And even in the case of someone pretending, they are still a real human being pretending, and their motivations become a part of the bigger story of who they truly are. Does that makes any sense? Mind you, I have little patience to invite bullshit into my life and in these cases, I'm rarely tempted to scratch the surface to see what is underneath as usually, it is just simply more bullshit. - LA
