The pope can hardly be expected to mention the sexual abuse scandal in an Easter address.

However he can admit guilt so the wheels of redemption  can be set in motion; to take personal responsibility even if the pope is not personally responsible.

In this, as in most other matters, the church is hopelessly backward.

Pope’s Easter message to the world ignores sex abuse scandal

Pope Benedict XVI ignored calls for a mea culpa over the growing crisis of clerical sex abuse today as a senior prelate insisted the Church would not be intimidated by "petty gossip".

How, precisely, would he go about admitting guilt for it without mentioning it?

I'm not Catholic, so this is just my one day, one church, one priest experience.

I went to Easter Mass with a good friend today. The Priest did mention the churches history and issues with the sex scandels over the years. Maybe because I am in the Father Porter, Geoghan and Cardinal Law region and we were heavily affected by it.

I think he messed up.

Secrecy is repugnant.  This crap has been going on for many years.  He is unwilling to clean house.   He is finished- as having any credibility.

My patience is thin- as I see that 30 years from now- it will be business as usual.  which means more victims.   He should step down NOW.

Pahunk, a new day has dawned, we actually agree on something.

The Catholic Church's policy over the years has been to protect their financial resources rather than the children being abused.

Does it not occur that if ratzinger steps aside, who is credible enough to take his position, what about all the others, are they just as guilty ? If this has been going on for decades and  hundreds of years perhaps there is more to come out, ratzinger might even be sitting there in defiance to stop an even bigger bucket of shit from being discovered, a bucket that could possibly destroy the catholic church forever.

All through the Vatican history popes have been embroiled in all  manner of personal power seeking crimes, Rodrigo Borgia ( Alexander V1) being a particularly notable offender, and there was another, I forget the name of earlier on, who was instrumental in the destruction of  the power held by the Byzantium eunachs, whom the clergy hated, quite possibly because their vow of celibacy meant nothing to the trust the castrati held with the great and influential powers of the time period.

In fact, is that the way forward, it is obvious they cannot hold to their vows, should they for the sake of their church, power and wealth adopt the eunach way of life, that should sort the devoted from the easy riders, lopp of their tackle, sterilise them like they do with paedophiles, and there with hope destroy all possibilities of them even thinking to take a break from their vows.

Perhaps the eunach was the perfect advisor, a person devoid of the baggage that gnaws away at even the best intentioned.

Does it matter, the vows were broken, that is their church crime, underage is a crime according to law of the land in most civilised countries. The bottom line, whatever they call it, a weakness, a sin, or even a holiday from their vows, they have broken what makes them worthy in the eyes of those that look up to them. Maybe it is a few, maybe it is more than a few, maybe it is a lot more, but they, just like any other male now, are under suspicion of thoughts of wrong actions for their desire, or position of guiding minors.

But, I expect this has always gone on, more so in the past than the present, but where the church has stood still, society has moved with the times and forward, we of society now have the power to challenge the old ways, and their mould them into something fitting for our present and future. It is time the Vatican especially realised their predicament and learned they will survive, if they become part of society, as staying outside of it, aloof and stuck in ancient ways, will eventually destroy them and given the nature of these crimes, quite possibly faster than they think.

Well then- tossing a soda can out the window- is the same crime as murder?

Am I splitting hairs?  I guess I figure people are human and will error.  But there is a firm line on some things.

I cannot accept the error, the knowlege is there, interfering with minors is an unlawful act, so a perpetrator has committed a crime, and there should be sought out and dealt with according to the law of the land.

The church, it is hoped in our Western society are also subject to the law of the land in which they reside and operate, and so crimes discovered in our new powerful age should be sought out and punished where necessary.

As to a church belief that a member of their church has attoned for their crime in the past by being an overall good egg since, is not for the church to decide, a law of the land crime committed can only be examined and resulting decisions made by a criminal court of the land concerned.

But, what is being tested here, the new powerful public demands, or the church's age old tradition to shelter the pursued seeking sanctuary. Could it be in our new age, one who gives shelter to the pursued can also be held liable, harbouring a criminal as opposed to giving sanctuary to one who asks ?

Funny - i thought they were protecting the churches good name. Financial resources has only come into play over the last decade or so.

How many times does an institution have to say it was wrong and how sorry it was?
What are you really looking for here?

You can't give children their innocence back after something like this. You can pay for therapy. You can kick priests out that induldged in this behaviour, but other than that, what can the church really do?

That might be a start...or maybe turn the perpetrators over to the secular authorities rather than hide them....

I don't believe the Easter Mass would have been appropriate for the Pope to address this.

There is no confusion over the situation as far as I see it Aneirin - those who knew of the offences and then facilitated the evasion of justice or facilitated the commission of further offences must be charged and face trial. It is not for the church to decide whether the law applies or not, it is for the courts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessory_(legal_term)

How can you say that finances have only come into it over the last decade or so?  The Church has always been about wealth and control.  Back in the time of Martin Luther you could buy a dispensation to save the soul of a loved one... this is all about finances.
