LadyEllen, your link doesn't have anything on it.

Here is a Jury Instruction of Accessory here in TN from the T.P.I. Crim 3.03.

This is just one state of course, but i would bet most State's are very similar to same. To me the problem one encounters with the Pope especially is the concept of knowingly. Does he really know? They would also have to prove that people actually know. That's a hard thing to prove. There is a difference between the cops saying this person did something and a person actually knowing same.

Interfering with a criminal investigation would probably be more apt than accessory to me. This to me is better formulated to deal with people who are trying to hide something based upon their belief so and so didn't do something, rather than trying to prove what they did or did not know at the time.

Thats weird Barely - I coped it from the webpage!

This doesnt have to be about charging the pope though - the relevant bishops, the colleagues of the priests concerned and possibly other parties that conspired as accessory will be the immediately guilty parties. They knew, and we can know they knew from their own paperwork, their actions and the testimony of many on both sides of the issue, including horrified innocent priests who did what they could to prevent paedophiles running the shop.

The question of the pope may be readily resolved once we charge and try his underlings.

Please call me angel or barelynangel thanks. I still think accessory will be hard to prove, especially in cases that are years old. I think obstruction would work also or interfering.

I think these cases especially from years and years ago will be damn hard to prove.

One of my major concerns is the idea that this could also be for SOME not all, a way to get money or attention and the alleged abuse never occured. I am a skeptical sort.

Anerin,  the issue is underaged.

Not so much that the celibacy was broken.

The bottom line, whatever they call it, a weakness, a sin, or even a holiday from their vows, they have broken what makes them worthy in the eyes of those that look up to them.

Aneirin...you must be kidding. The bottom line is not weakness, a holiday from the vow of celebacy, a sin, or a loss of respect in the eyes of those that look up to them.

The bottom line is children were raped by these monsters and the church did nothing more than move them to another parish and another group of innocent victims.

The Pope led an office that recieved a complaint about Father Murphy. Do you really think that the allegation was so trivial, that the man in charge wouldnt here of it. As for suggesting some people are making false allegation, whats your point. There has still been a cover up over the cases they DID know about.

Good post Holly, I am amazed so many people seem to be worried about the poor old Church than the abused Children.

You can pay for therapy. You can kick priests out that induldged in this behaviour, but other than that, what can the church really do?
That might be a start...or maybe turn the perpetrators over to the secular authorities rather than hide them....

I so agree with this - I'm thinking there is something in the bible about rendering unto caesur and I also think that abusing children is a case for caesur (authorities), therefore, the abusers should be turned over to the authorities.

In an attempt not to join the hue and the cry, I was attempting to be diplomatic on the situation. I know full well what these people did, and nothing would give me the greatest pleasure than to see the downfall of the Vatican and it's popes. I have my own axe to grind against those people and I would like nothing better than to see the vatican vaults thrown open to the world, who knows, what may well be hidden in there might very well go some way to sorting out ongoing world problems, for I suspect the vatican has supressed all of the bright thought through the ages, as I understand, the vatican history, is that of ,it  will not be challenged.
