One would like to think that his reasons for maintaining his anonymity were purely altruistic. That is true charity, being unnamed. But the reality is now that so many people are wanted or have other legal problems maybe he just didn't want to deal with it right now. And we don't even know if he was here legally, maybe not. I bet the kid's Parents were glad he was here, regardless of the other circumstances.

why is it if someone is not a media whore then they must be a criminal or illegal alien? Someone does something good so why are they suddenly obliged to support a commercial enterprise that is only motivated by their own self interest and who would love to find something negative (even if it is just something like that person is one of us here) and have pundits destroy saying whatever they want judging people in a public kangaroo court. I would jump in a cab too.

"Someone does something good so why are they suddenly obliged to support a commercial enterprise that is only motivated by their own self interest"

OK I snipped it. But it's a good point. I think I did say maybe. I also may have not been clear enough that I would hope that it is just like you said. The guy just didn't want the attention, not that he was wanted or something like that.

If that is so it is nice to know there are people out there like that still. Somewhat like a fireman saving someone who says later "I was just doing my job". Lke the pilot who had to land in the water after leaving NYC not so long ago. There was some speculation about just why you didn't see more of him on TV, maybe there was too much he couldn't say or didn't want to say or whatever. Or maybe he figures he was just doing his job.

Not that acting as a lifeguard is the duty of every Frenchman here or anything like that, but we all do have the responsibility to save someone's ass if we can do it without hurting ourselves. In this particular case though, I swim worth shit, and am not qualified to rescue anyone, what's more in my condition just jumping in would probably put me into a state of shock, compounding the situation.

The basic fact is that I can't swim. That doesn't stop me from doing other things. Even after I got sick I slammed by buddy's stepkid into the wall a couple of times for teasing a dog in a cage. Big fat punk. So I am not totally inactive, but really water and I do not get along. In fact I think the fact that we have feet means we belong on land. Always have thought that way. On top of that I can't stand water in my eyes and never could, I'd have to drink whiskey to be able to use an eyewash. There is ALWAYS a towel in the shower so I can dry my eyes immediately.

But if I was able to swim well and saw a kid drowning I would go and jump in there. We owe that.

Comes to mind something that happened long time ago. And this is why I like to be ready, and able. I was in heavy traffic waiting to make a left turn with bout five cars ahead of me. This was at Lorain Ave. turning onto W 117th. A busy intersection. On the other side a van pulls up, two guys get out and snatch a Woman off the street and drag her into the van.

Immediately I go into mode four. I don't have my gun, I can't get there but I do have a cellphone, and I was one of the few back then. Fucking basttery died as I was talking to 911. My intent was thus : get on the phone with 911, follow the van to report thier location. At the time I was legal (yes it was that long ago). I had no gun, I knew there were at least threee guys in there, and if they are doing this they might just be tough. I was pretty tough but I knew it would be at least the three of them against me. I thought it out. I did watch for the van on 117th, but it was not there. Of course they got the fuck outta there. There was simply nothing I could do. What could I do ?

I had cars in front which obviously I can't just drive through or over, there is a constant stream of traffic on the left of me, so even if I manage to pull out without causing a ten car pileup, by the time everybody got the fucking hint and backed up or whatever to let me through, that van would surely be on the highway headed for who knows where.

I failed, and I don't want to fail again. I was practically indestructable then, but now I do not fear destruction. I also have the best cellphone battery in the state. Seriously it lasts weeks. And with a four wheel drive maybe I can do something good. I would love to. And yes I would talk to the benficiaries after, but I want nothing. Pay me to do what any good Citizen should do ,,,, what ?

Well if I save your ass maybe a sixpack.

I have been a "good samaritan" in the past & have never stuck around to get any applause for my efforts.  I will stay long enough to make sure that the proper medical people have arrived & then be on my way.  And I'm not an illegal nor do I have any warrants out.  I don't think.  No, I'm sure the statutes of limitations are up.

haha when i went to get fingerprinted and all to go to work for the school system years ago, the guy doing it said i seemed nervous and asked if there was anything i needed to confess.  i said i think i am good, but there was this one night in colorado springs back in 78 that i worry about.  thats when he told me that unless it had been a murder, the statute of limitations had run out.

i said then fingerprint away!

If I had thrown myself into 40 degree water, I wouldn't wait around for newspaper photographers to get there either. I'd want a hot shower and dry clothes. And a lot of hot, sweet tea!
