About a week ago, I was working out during my lunch break with a friend from my office, who is roughly my age with a comparable background.  We're pretty close.  We often find ourselves competing for attention from women.  I was spotting him while he bench pressed (he benches ten pounds more than me) and noticed that there is a small but unmistakable bald spot beginning on the back of his head.  I found myself smirking and saying to myself "Guess who just became the best looking  guy in the office!"

Petty? God yes.  Sad?  Yes.  A cry for help?  Possibly.  A pick-me-up?  Undeniably.

Who else is a big enough person to admit they're a petty enough person to have found joy in the (minor but inevitable) misfortune of dear friends and strangers recently?

I am petty enough to have found utter satisfaction in the obvious unhappiness, and physical toll it is taking, of my adult son's, former mother and father-in-law. I had not seen them up close in several years, before my son and their daughter split up. They caused my son such misery during that breakup by sticking their noses where they didn't belong and behaving worse than the brattiest, worst bullies, I have ever known. It wasn't enough for them to just be a support system for their daughter, they had to try and destroy my son. To attempt to remove him from her life and my grandson's lives. The repercussions they suffered for that, and the obvious toll it has taken on them, made my heart glad. That and the fear in their faces when they saw me.... Being courteous and polite to them was a delight.

You need a better plan for enticing that special woman.

True- being in shape is good... but- woman go for a variety of traits.

Find your niche and run with it.  Surely- the ladies will note it- and who knows?

I am able to admit that I do suffer from this from time to time. I also admit that it is at times like those that I sit down and have to say a prayer of love for that person. I can't live with that kind of passive aggressive hostility. It is something i struggle with.

I will say that yesterday I put a student on the spot who was not prepared for class .... He often disrupts and I got some nasty pleasure out of calling on him. He was embarrassed, but he did stfu. Of course then, I needed to do a little soul searching about the times I have not been prepared and finding a way to support my students rather than embarrass them. I think it is a tool that can be used at times, and I'm not squeamish about using it. However, it bothers me that I enjoyed seeing him on the spot. His antics irritate me, and my response certainly wasn't very loving.

What I want to do is take him (and his cronies who are also doing poorly) and teach them a remedial course in English. I want them to do well! I want to help them! But I know that instead they will fail. How can I help them? They are disruptive because they don't understand. How can I help them when they don't want to be helped or can't ask for help? And how can I help them to stop hindering the other students?

More than you wanted, I know. Sorry.

PA, what the hell does this have to do with anything on this thread???

As for 'that special woman', to be honest, though off topic........right now, I really don't give a damn. And THAT is my only, current, road block.

Last week's Sunday Times magazine has this, with multiple things you can do to be a better teacher, get students to stop disrupting, etc.

Yeah, I admit to having a snork at the expense of others now and again... but I try not to make a habit of it! And no, not at the expense of my friends.

Sunshine, you rule! They are so lucky to have you at that university!
