25 men lost their lives in West Virginia yesterday. For those of you who are so inclined, please say a prayer for the 25 families who are faced with such a loss. And for the rescue crews who are putting their lives on the line to get to them and bring them home.

thanks!

I've been hearing the updates about it on the news.  Apparently 4 men are still missing.  Some family members, while they know have lost their loved ones, have not even gotten official word yet.  One man I heard worked in that mine for 30 yrs and was due to retire in 5 wks.  The company still has not notified the family.

There is a tension between coal and gas interests.

Some protester  got arrested- putting a "hex" on JPM for their involvement.....

The mine in Raleigh County, near Beckley, W.Va., was cited for 458 safety violations last year, with 50 of them listed as unwarrantable failures to comply -- citations reserved under federal mining regulations for instances of willful or gross negligence.

Because the god being worshiped by the company owners and mangers was money, human lives being worth less than the coal.

They are finally back in the mine and looking for 4 people they believe might possibly still alive. Any positive thoughts and prayer sent that way would be appreciated.

please pray for the rescuers too...they have no idea what they are facing in there.

the rescue crews entered at 5am and have three hours of travel time in a transport car to get to the area where they believe the miners are, but it is reported they will not make it the entire way in the car and will have to travel on foot. The last report i heard was they expected to hear from the rescue crews by noon.

The reality of coal mining in West Virginia is that it is by definition an extremely dangerous job, but it is a job.  Many of the people here have no hope for a job at all unless it is coal mining (or logging which is also very dangerous.)

A couple of years ago i taught an adult job search class in West Virginia.  The only hope that some of my students had was to go into the mines.

This mine is only 35 miles from where i live.  Several of my neighbors are miners.  Several of my neighbors are mine instructors.  At least one of my neighbors is a mine inspector.

We are all praying for the miners, the rescuers, and the families.

My former Father in Law and Uncle in law (ex hubbys family is from WV) both work as coal miners. I have heard from both of them, thanfully, and they were not involved in this but only by sheer luck. My Uncle worked at that mine until he broke his leg in an unsafe shaft and has been on medical leave for a few weeks. My father in law transfered out after my uncles accident. I had met some of the other workers, though, and this is horrible. The fact that they knew there were problems, have had accidents, and there was still nothing being done just makes me angry.

i read a statement from a family member of one of the 25 who died. She said her loved one felt he would die down there, as the conditions were so dangerous. Yet, he went to work day after day to support his family. How sad is that?

The owner of the mine......i can't even begin to say what i think of him. Now...because of his greed, 32 rescue workers have their lives on the line in there.

The rescue workers are deeply in there...miles in...and the methane levels are at the explosive range. They all have to get out on foot.

Please God. let them be safe.

Damn, they have had to turn back. Its the concept of so close yet so far away. It is a good call - safety for the rescuers are vital, but 1000 feet away from the chamber - wow. Keep thoughts going their way, please.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_mine_explosion

Part of the article --
quote:

MONTCOAL, W.Va. – Dangerous gases forced rescue crews to abandon the search Thursday for four coal miners missing since an explosion killed 25 colleagues in the worst U.S. mining disaster in more than two decades.

Rescuers had been working their way through the Upper Big Branch mine by rail car and on foot early Thursday, but officials said they had to turn back because of an explosive mix of gases in the area they needed to search.

"We think they are in danger and that's the whole intent of evacuating them from the mine," said Kevin Stricklin of the Mine Health and Safety Administration.

The rescuers made it to within about 1,000 feet of an airtight chamber with four days worth of food, water and oxygen where they hoped the miners might have sought refuge. They did not make it far enough to see the bodies of the dead or determine if anyone had made it to the chamber.

i just heard all rescue workers are safe.

Work resumed on drilling another hole which will reduce the levels of methane and make it safe for the rescue workers to go back in.

Now...as if this statement wasn't bad enough...

"Massey CEO Don Blankenship has conceded that the explosion shows the mine was not completely safe"

The fool just came out with this gem...

"To some extent the fact that there were more survivors than those that are lost suggests that the mine was in pretty good shape relative to what mines would have been in the past and hopefully by today's standards," he told The Associated Press on Thursday. There were 61 miners in Upper Big Branch when it exploded.
http://cbs3.com/national/coal.mine.rescue.2.1621500.html

Well lets see...out of 61 miners, 25 are known dead, 4 are assumed dead, and two are hospitalized, one of which is in critical care. 32 rescue workers came close to losing their lives when the methane and hydrogen levels climbed to the explosive range.

But to him, the mine was just in fine ol' shape because 61 men went to work that day and 32 are still alive.

"Stricklin said crews would neutralize potentially explosive air in the Upper Big Branch coal mine with nitrogen, allowing rescuers to go back in and remain there even if an explosive mixture builds again in the air. Officials said the rescue teams will make "a mad dash" to one of the mine's two airtight rescue chambers, which were stocked with enough food, water and air to keep 15 miners alive for four days"
http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/04/09/west.virginia.mine/index.html?hpt=T2

So while the CEO is busy sounding like an ass by ATTEMPTING to defend the safety of the mine, 32 rescuers are going miles deep into that mine and are fully prepared to stay in there if the methane and hydrogen levels reach an explosive level.

they are 32 heros, in my opinion
