Can't say that I'm a full-fledged Taoist but the Tao teachings run hand in hand with all that I was taught as a child, and then later in studying martial arts; honesty, respect, and humility, are qualities that make one strong. One of my favorite quotes from the version of the "Tao Te Ching" that was given to me as a gift is "All streams flow to the sea because it is lower than they are, humility gives it it's strength".

Taoism (to the limited extent I understand it) complements my Christian perspective. I don't dismiss it at all. Taosim identifies the fundamental principals of polarity and give-and-take. Most other universal principals build on this (in my opinion, anyway).

That is how I see it as well. That is why I say I borrow from it rather than I identify as a Taoist.

I'm not at all suggesting that those who label themselves Taoists aren't true Taoist. I'm trying to figure out when does someone go from simply saying they have been influenced by something to having adopted it completely as a label.

I am not sure what it is. How then would I even know it I adhere to it?

The tatt is ugly.   I have a bald eagle over a sunset.   1.   With the ex- that tatt clashes with his prior tattoo. It looks silly.   Tough guy bad azz-- and Tao.

Well, then SBD, you didn't read my post ... I talked about the visual. I talked about how it impacts on my life. How is that commenting on something I have no opinion of? My opinion is that it has helped me through some tough times and I respect and am grateful for it (perhaps I should have been more overt in the last part, but it seems obvious to me).

I visit the Buddhist temples, and I've been to some Renaissance churches. They have something in common. When people couldn't read, the pictures told the story of their beloved leader. I love to look at the pix. The visual aspect of a religion often has a long history of being an important way the common people could experience the stories.

From the comments on this thread, I'd say that while I may not comment on the philosophy, it certainly seems to have impacted me. So much of what is being said rings true as to how I live my life.

What I have recieved from Taoism is a better understanding of balance.  Balance is a natural state of being. It also helps me to remember that I could not appreciate the light if there was no dark.  How could I understand or appreciate happiness if I had never known suffering?  Who and what I encounter on my path I could leave to fate or I could influence who and what I encounter through right thinking.  In other words:

Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.
