But in these cases, at a certain point, I usually start getting way more interested in sucking all the knowledge and perspective that I can out of my interlocutor. There's no better way to learn than to debate with somebody who is smarter than you (even if you don't admit it).
Is everybody as cynical as I am? Threads on message boards invariably turn into scenes that remind me of that old Archers of Loaf lyric "It's always the same people/Pissing the same people off." So when you argue, are you trying to persuade the people you're arguing against? Or are you trying to argue some hypothetical audience of "undecideds" who may or may not be out there/reading at all? Or is everybody like me, all too often just in it to fly the flag of their tribe and get a few shits and giggles?
Nope. You pretty much hit the nail on the head.
In my case, I have my own beliefs and positions, but as you said, it's usually not worth the time if I am just trying to convince someone of my side. That almost never works anyway. As for my positions....I'm about as strictly 'middle-of-the-road' as one can get. This position is a wonderful one for me, because it lets me take literally any side to a debate.
When I hop into a debate....it's for one main reason -- to hold a dark, sarcastic mirror up for the ones who *are* trying to preach/convince/etc. others and show them the folly of their ways. I know I'll never convince them of a side -- unless it's already their side I'm on -- but if they see for a shining moment the ridiculous nature of their position, then so be it. And if not...at least I've had my fun. That fun is magnified when they have completely ridiculous positions or beliefs (swearing up and down Palin would have been good as a VP, for example).
In the end, though, like a cat with a new toy....I eventually get bored (or saddened at how little a grip the opponent has on reality) and I move on.

), and those are the folks I prefer to engage with. There are people here I think of as friends and would happily sit down over cold adult beverages with, if a workable opportunity presented itself. A third party reading our exchanges, might not catch that.
