Here you ask such a question ? Actually I guess it is born of the idea that boards are a classroom when of course they're all too often closer to Romper room.

Few come to the boards to learn (debate) but to articulate their own presumptions and prejudices. They find a few in agreement and sooth their egos in mutual self-deception.

I come to see other view points, learn about people, make friends and have fun. I dont presume and I respect most who disagree with me and I dont hold grudges. I think the above statement is more a reflection of the poster than the actual truth.

This doesn't necessarily reflect well on me, but when I get into political arguments, especially on the internet, I'm really only in it to boost my own ego.  I try to get in a few good quips.  Drop a few names.  Crack a few jokes.  A little erudition.  A little mockery and irony.  Then, after I've struck a few poses, I'm basically done.  Now I do believe in the positions that I argue, and I would like for other people to agree.  But I'm far too jaded to believe that in most online donnybrooks there is any chance in hell of persuasion.

Occasionally, I'll find myself arguing with someone who knows more than I do about the topic.  This may or may not be apparent to a third party, because I'm a crafty little son of a bitch.  But in these cases, at a certain point, I usually start getting way more interested in sucking all the knowledge and perspective that I can out of my interlocutor.  There's no better way to learn than to debate with somebody who is smarter than you (even if you don't admit it).

Is everybody as cynical as I am?  Threads on message boards invariably turn into scenes that remind me of that old Archers of Loaf lyric "It's always the same people/Pissing the same people off."  So when you argue, are you trying to persuade the people you're arguing against?  Or are you trying to argue some hypothetical audience of "undecideds" who may or may not be out there/reading at all?  Or is everybody like me, all too often just in it to fly the flag of their tribe and get a few shits and giggles?

Nope. You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

In my case, I have my own beliefs and positions, but as you said, it's usually not worth the time if I am just trying to convince someone of my side. That almost never works anyway. As for my positions....I'm about as strictly 'middle-of-the-road' as one can get. This position is a wonderful one for me, because it lets me take literally any side to a debate.

When I hop into a debate....it's for one main reason -- to hold a dark, sarcastic mirror up for the ones who *are* trying to preach/convince/etc. others and show them the folly of their ways. I know I'll never convince them of a side -- unless it's already their side I'm on -- but if they see for a shining moment the ridiculous nature of their position, then so be it. And if not...at least I've had my fun. That fun is magnified when they have completely ridiculous positions or beliefs (swearing up and down Palin would have been good as a VP, for example).

In the end, though, like a cat with a new toy....I eventually get bored (or saddened at how little a grip the opponent has on reality) and I move on.

My reply would so closely resemble Sunshinemiss's, she already wrote it for me.

It is rare that I feel any emotion other than humour. I enjoy participating in a witty or intelligent discussion. Especially when I am outmatched in intelligence and information. It challenges me, pushes me, occasionally I learn something or get a great idea for a new path of learning. I've read quite a few books I didn't know existed because of discussions here.

I think one of the most invaluable things I have learned from my participation here is a deeper understanding of how people's brains work. That, most often, emotion leads, even if it is not the most rational path. I have also learned how weirdly different individuals are in how they determine their 'right choices/ideas' and how deeply ingrained that is, in some. Almost beyond the point of rational discussion. Again, strong emotions.

I've seen the proof of something I read long ago.........how our egos tend to rely too heavily on ideology for self identity. Hense the emotions. And how terrifying it is for most of us to question our ideology. Even when it might benefit us.

I guess you could say the benefit of a large part of my discussions here have very little to do with the topic, but more to do with the people participating. Basically it's a win win for me. I don't get upset, I learn about people and occasionally a topic or two.

Discussion, debate or argument as you call it, is for me the best way to learn and gain multiple perspectives on a subject, so much so that I've been academically researching this very topic for the last 5 years.

I don't believe "persuasion" is the right word for me changing my mind. We have a choice in any discussion either listen with an open or closed mind. On most occasions I listen with an open mind and now and then someone brings a fact that I had not considered. Even if it does not sink in right away it will eventually ...and change the way I think about a subject.

You do of course realize there are subjects that have no right or wrong answer such as religion, abortion, capital punishment and the like. Or should I say there are different arguments that can carry weight. In these type discussions it is the third party listeners we are tying to convince not the person we are arguing with.

All and all this message board reflects deeper emotions than face to face discussions because of the anonymity of the forum and you can get a better take on the true person…I like it that way.

It is the intelligent discussion, on board and off- that I like here.  Not that I like every single post- thats life.

We evolve- we try to live better-- and time and place change.

Shitz and grinz are a large component. I have a sadistic sense of humor, and this place is a good outlet for that. Sometimes there is a flag that needs to be carried into the conversation, lest the bullshit get too deep. I also enjoy talking politics which pretty much mandates some arguing.

I approach these forums with a smile on my face. I try to operate on the assumption that whoever is on the other end has one too (or at least walked in the door looking to get hurt ), and those are the folks I prefer to engage with. There are people here I think of as friends and would happily sit down over cold adult beverages with, if a workable opportunity presented itself. A third party reading our exchanges, might not catch that.

My worldview has evolved greatly over the years, and I hope that will continue. The differing ideas others offer contribute to that.

A lot of people have a difficult time separating an opinion or belief from self.... this seems to be why you so often see a heated debate turn into a name calling fiasco...

While I agree, the pic can be seen as offensive, it was posted by a liberal as a dig at a republican, so it's ok
