Toppingfrmbottom -> Why is my depocoat medication making my hair fall out? (4/11/2010 1:34:23 PM)

I'm on it for bipolar, and I've noticed recently a constant amount of hair is falling out, actually rather coming out when ever I handle my hair. The pych dr said it's a side affect of the medication, as is the near weekly stomach pains indigestion and bloating. He's lowered the dose down to one pill a night in hopes the side affects will lesson, we'll see.

I was taking Zoloft a while back, after months of trying to adjust dosages and interactions with other medications I finally tossed them in the toilet.

The bad thing about medications to treat anything behavioral-health related, is that it takes a while to determine whether something works or not, and if you are willing to live with the side effects if it does.  Bah.

Worst-case scenario?  You could get a new wig for every day of the week!  I'm sure hoping that it won't come to that, though.  It certainly is scary to see yourself lose what appears to be so much hair, day in day out.  I went through this post-partum.  Damn hormones!

He was going to take me off of it completely, but I am doing so well on it, side affects excluded, and I just bought the prescription refill, and I know it's stupid but I'd hate to waste 200 pills, that if I had not bought could of been used by someone else. However, if the side affects do continue he's taking me off them completly and I support that.

My aunt has a similar problem, so I did my herbal thing and had her massaging jojoba and lavender oil into her scalp before she goes to bed.

As for the stomach, she has a similar problem, but not with this particular medicine, so I have her drinking a tea of red raspberry leaves, fresh ginger, mint, chamomile and catnip. ( lol yes, kitty crack )

If i may suggest, if you need B12, to take the type that is a liquid that goes under your tongue (sublingual) - it absorbs directly into the blood stream this way.

i can't take B12 pills as i lack the factor in my stomach to process them - and many people have a hard time getting B12 absorption from pills. The liquid stuff is amazing, has changed my life - and my energy levels - for sure.

Good luck to you!

The human body loses 100 shafts of hair every day.  That is the normal without the Depokate.

I do suffer the lovely affects of Depokate (hair loss and tremors) but it is the one mood stabilizer  that does works for me.

I have come to terms with mine hair loss.  These days, I am more concerned about my legs giving out and my SIL problems.
