I went for a walk down main street this morning and I saw them flying around together up pretty high, just specks in the sky circling around on the breeze over near the foot hills, then about ten minutes ago I walked under the building they're nesting on and I could hear one of them screaming like they do. I don't know what the  proper terminology is fro the sound they make but they do let you know they're around!

lol, I bet they do!  They would be so absolutely cool to see them flying around as a pair.  I was 'touched' when I saw him bringing her some food yesterday.  My aunt had a bald eagle (a mateless female) living in a huge pine tree next to her house.  There were two baby eagles in her nest and we used to watch her bringing little critters and fish to them as they were growing up.  And as they grew and started to fly, you'd see the three of them in succession flying into the nest.  It was really cool.

And I don't live by any birds of prey, but do live across from a lake and there are Sandhill Cranes living in there.  When they have their babies, the whole brood takes off in flight across the skies.  And they have a horrifying screech that they let out lol.

I wonder if you'll get to see the whole family of peregines flying over head, once the babies start to fly?  hehehe

A couple of years ago I watched a real nail biter as two of the juvenile peregrines from that same nest were competing against each other over a busy street for a pigeon that one of them had caught. I didn't know if they were fighting or playing, but one falcon would strike at the pigeon as it was being carried in the talons of its sibling causing the pigeon to free fall towards oncoming traffic. Then the falcon that had struck at it would immediately dive (and they are so fast) and catch it in midair, followed immediately by the other falcon striking at the pigeon while in the other's talons, thus repeating the performance.

The third and final time they were nearly at street level and going straight towards some oncoming cars, but they pulled out of their dive just in the nick of time, barely avoiding a collision with the vehicles down below.

The pigeon landed alone and quite dead in the middle of the busy street, and one of the falcons landed on the top level of a three story parking garage across from where I stood and it watched as its meal was repeatedly run over by many cars and trucks down below.

I went out and got the pigeon and placed it on the sidewalk down below the falcon in hopes of dissuading it from trying to retrieve it from the street but alas, they both abandoned the pigeon altogether after I had touched it.

My close encounters...

I, unexpectedly, ended up going over to my parent’s house this past Sunday, where I was afforded the opportunity to take these pictures, of what I am fairly certain is a Bald Eagle.

We think there were two, but are not sure, as we did not see them together. One flew away, and within a few minutes, the one in the pics was spotted in a tree, near where the first took off from. I hope they/it make(s) a habit of stopping by, as I don't think I would ever get tired of seeing them.

Also, in either the fall of ’05’, or summer of ‘06’, a falcon had somehow managed to get in to the warehouse style building I work in, and was stuck inside for close to two weeks. It was pretty wild having it flying around; watching us as we worked.

Eventually it got weak from lack of nutrition and stopped flying so much. One of the other employees went up in a forklift cage, covered it with his jacket to get it down, and was able to let it go outside, where it flew off after a few minutes.

I was glad there was a happy ending; and more so, to have had the opportunity to spend so much time around it, so close.

Thank you for posting the pictures and the stories Kim. Its inspiring to get that close to a wild eagle or falcon, I know - and those are some great shots. The Boise falcons have four eggs now, and they've been very active in the skies over downtown, and they're acting very territorial of late.

Here's the peregrine web cam address again, for anyone who would like a look.

I'm really looking forward to the hatch  this year!

You’re welcome, Thomas. Glad I could contribute. : )

I was pretty impressed the pictures came out as well as they did. It wasn’t easy to see what I was aiming at through the display, and I had to check where I was going, as I tried to creep forward on my knees; all inconspicuous like. lol

I’ve watched the falcons on the web cam, some. It’s been on three hrs today.

So far, I’ve seen a couple of switch outs (saw the 4 eggs : ) ); at one point, another falcon showed up, and was sent away.

Way cool!

Kim

Its been unseasonably cold and very windy in Boise for the last few days so they have been right on top of those eggs. You can probably tell from looking at the falcons too, by the way they've been huddled down so low and how their feathers are blowing around so much.

Thomas

Ive enjoyed this thread very much. Thanks guyz! I live in the NY Catskills and there are coyotes and falcons and all sorts of animals that have yes done, diving screeching, and killing of our cats and chickens. The wildlife has had us lying awake at night listening to them loudly living their lives in all sorts of unexpected ways. Altho I hate to listen to them making a kill, I also wouldn't like it if we killed them all off.  So thanks for posting from all over the place. Its great to see places outside the Catskills.

Yes, we (my neighbor was over, watching with me) did notice they were being blown around a bit. We didn’t think that would be very comfortable.

I was surprised to see one of the birds leaving the eggs alone a few times, but it was only gone for about 2-5 minutes each time.

There didn’t seem to be much wind this morning, but it appears to have picked up again, some; still, less constant than yesterday.

Its a little warmer today than yesterday, our high is going to be around 60 F or so, and no its not quite as windy. Its real comfortable weather to work outside in.

I've also been a little surprised seeing the eggs unattended for periods that seemed a long time to me, earlier on when there were only two eggs there. I never timed how long they were left alone though, and it was warmer then.

Thats way cool, Ken! Ours are way behind yours, and I don't understand that because, if I'm not mistaken, isn't the weather there comparable to Boise's?

The high here today should be around 63 and thats unseasonably cool for us. This time last year I was sunburned a little, and really enjoying the summer like weather.

How high up is Boise? We're about the same latitude so altitude should be the only major difference.

We've had a cold dry spring here. Today's high is expected to be only 55 which is very unseasonable for early May.

The eggs were laid in late March which, IIRC, is roughly when she laid her eggs last year as well.

The altitude where the birds are at is right around 2700, 2800 feet above sea level.

Is it foggy or smoggy there, or is the lens just dirty?

IIRC the camera is inside the library and is shooting through glass. Although it could be a dirty lens as well.

Chicago is only about 600 feet above sea level so a 2000+ foot difference could account for a later mating cycle for the peregrines.

That explains it. Nesting peregrines and window washers do not get along well at all...
