Or tights, codpieces, and fancy ruffled shirts, a la Lord Byron.  Oh yeah!

Mick Jagger did his very best to bring back frilly shirts and crushed velvet back in the Chelsea Drugstore days, but nobody was really willing to play along.  It's a shame, too, because the look would have been even more becoming in the age of deodorant and dry cleaning services than it was in Byron's heyday.

Oh, and public hangings!
Mark Twain (Samuel Clements) said he saw his first hanging before he was 12!
If my taxdollars are paying for executions I damn well want to see them!
Think about it, a public hanging in a big park, you could make a day of it, hot dogs, frisbees, games for the kids, a rock band singing "Hey Hey, goodbye", cotton candy, fireworks.
And you could watch a heinous criminal dancing in the wind!

*LURVS Mark Twain and AGREES With This Post!!1!*

Laughing at the 8 track comment. My dad was mournful for years after cars stopped coming with 8 track players. He had all those tapes and couldn't use them anymore and couldn't buy them in cassette format.

Celeste, I'm not sure what was worse, when they'd come unspooled and get jammed in the player, or the times when a song would get cut in half due to the track changing.

I agree with the Audrey Hepburn comment. We don't get dressed up anymore. We go out to the store, movies etc. in what would be considered back then as our work clothes around the farm.

I used to wear these cool dresses with the silk belts. I remember wearing dress up coats, shoes, dresses, hats and gloves.

winterlight -> RE: Modern life is rubbish--What do you wish was still in fashion? (4/12/2010 8:02:12 PM)

I forgot to mention I loved those silk chinese pajamas that I used to wear. They felt great and looked wonderful..:)

Pinstripe suits and fedoras.  Or top hats.  Yes, I agree, what happened to the days where people dressed in tux and tails to go see a moving picture show?

I also miss the way people would sit around a radio and LISTEN to shows.  None of this brain rotting television crap... and I say that as I look over my shoulder at M's screen and my brain begins to melt from my ears.

Heyyyy, I should do that!  I have a bunch of old radio shows, and an online radio stream... Hmm...

Hold that thought kids. :D

I have zero fashion sense...I was once told I look real ghetto because I wear things till they are totally worn out, most of my clothes are at least 10 years old, and some of it even older (I still have a rugby jersey i used to wear in high school). I tend to put on whatever comes first to hand with no regard whatsoever to fashion or if it matches or not (I have no idea what goes with what). If I were rich I would enjoy the tuxedo thing (I used to wear a tux to parties in my 20s, that and a 3-piece suit & fedora combo - and by parties I don't mean the dress-up cocktail type of party....if you get my drift).

As far as what is now out of fashion...what do I care, I wear whatever suits me and don't give a crap what the world thinks...but that's how I live my whole life anyway.

lynchings, lawn jockeys and being able to refer to black males as boy.

Dressing appropriately for an occasion. I recently shuddered to see people attend the opera in jeans...

I'd look dashing in an ascot.  I'd wear an ascot every chance I got.  While we're at it, I'd love to wander around in a straw hat, a crisp collarless shirt, seersucker jacket, and cuff links.
So...I don't believe I have to say this, but...if you'd look dashing in an ascot, man up and wear one.

You'd turn heads-make that be a *good* thing.

Fashion is a crutch for those with no style-when I wear vintage tea dresses, people stop me in the street to compliment me-there's no reason you couldn't have the same effect.

You're absolutely right about this and this advice, in a sense, justified the entire thread.  I'm going to make it a point to acquire/learn how to wear an ascot.

Excellent. What is so wonderful about this moment in time is that style is eclectic. We are only limited by our creativity and our audacity to pull it off.

I wish people still dressed up to fly in an airplane. That would be cool. Especially if the women wore cute little pillbox hats. Of course, in this fantasy we are not crammed in like cattle...

This got me thinking about train travel and how wonderfully elegant it used to be... and guess what?  It still can be.... there are several trains that are still elegant and luxurious...  and it can all be had for the small price of about 1000.00 British pounds per day...     Someday...

I can't believe no one has mentioned KILTS.  Sure, people still wear them occasionally, but let's go back to when they were daily attire.  Or tights, codpieces, and fancy ruffled shirts, a la Lord Byron.  Oh yeah!

I'm probably one of the few on here who even owns a Kilt.

I miss hats! When I was younger and very few people were wearing hats, I had a collection of 30 or so. Cloche, floppy, beret's those lovely hats with the netting in front that covered your eyes ever so slightly. No ball caps! No product logo advertising! Just something to accent your clothing or show off you cute new hair cut in just the right way.
*sigh*

Bell bottoms. And whatever happened to lawn jockeys? They were everywhere in the 1950's.

Senility must suck.

This thread is VERY DEPRESSING.

If you like hats and hats make you look fit as, then wear hats! If you miss hats and the fact that you don't wear hats is making you sigh, put a hat on! Beglamour your head and bedazzle your admirers!

Actually, I wish pet monkeys were still in fashion.  I'd love to have a pet monkey.  And take it with me to the opera.  I'd be properly attired, of course, as would the monkey.  Top hat.  Monocle.  The whole deal.

Without a doubt! Every person needs a good lid, or more!  I love my fedora(s), pork pie, top hat, I would love to get a bowler or derby, but I don't look good in that style.  Alas...
