Or, Bowing to mediocrity...

White House Science ‘Czar’ Tells Students: U.S. Can’t Expect to Be Number One in Science and Technology Forever

The Obama administration’s top science and technology official, who has argued for the economic de-development of America,  warned science students last Friday that the United States cannot expect to be “number one” forever.

“We can’t expect to be number one in everything indefinitely,” Dr. John P. Holdren said at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Holdren is director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and chairs the President’s Council of Advisors on Science & Technology (PCAST), making him the top science adviser in the administration.

The former Harvard professor was at the AAAS to speak to students about the Obama administration’s priority of advancing science and technology issues; its goal to increase spending in the area to 3 percent of the gross domestic product; and Obama’s great personal interest in the fields.

A question for you Sanity...should the Dr.have told the kids everything is fine as is and we should ,simply by dint of being Americans, expect to be # 1 forever, sans changes in the emphasis placed on education ?    To not have this conversation now is to"strive for mediocrity !

DCWoody -> RE: Striving For Mediocrity (4/13/2010 12:28:25 PM)

Is all this 'czar'stuff a part of the 'hurr durr communism' aspect of obama bashing, or something I'm missing?

What Sanity is trying to say is that with teabaggers calling the party shots, and birthers ignoring reality and palin and other creationists flapping their asses, and fox news dumbing down so the average neanderthalic neo-con can be entertained on their level, that science is inevitably going to suffer in America.

I hate the name CZAR.  I hate the name "Homeland Security"

This is something new?  There is a reason why so many Visas were given to Computer engineers form India.  they have been focusing on Math and Science development for years.

We know too many home schooled kids who have programs that lack in high end math and science.

mnottertail -> RE: Striving For Mediocrity (4/13/2010 12:55:54 PM)

How do you feel about the name Elvis?

pyroaquatic -> RE: Striving For Mediocrity (4/13/2010 12:57:50 PM)

Over my stagnant decomposing corpse!

But seriously... why does it have to be Us or Them?

Last I checked the earth was round and full of people. America's ego is too big for America.

tsk tsk tsk....
Education and Energies... I tells ya. o_O

jlf1961 -> RE: Striving For Mediocrity (4/13/2010 1:54:34 PM)

Sanity, I really hate to tell you this, but the United States is far lower than the rest of the world when it comes to hard science and will remain that way until some one does something to revitalize our education system.

brainiacsub -> RE: Striving For Mediocrity (4/13/2010 2:02:51 PM)

But education = socialism, unless we are teaching the Bible. Have you not been following these threads?

It's worth mentioning that your country did a u turn on creationism and actually started teaching proper science again in the late '50s when it looked like the Godless commies in the USSR were winning the space race, isn't it?

Slicon Valley [ http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/north_america/jan-june10/siliconvalley_04-05.html ] companies laid off 95,000 people last year, many of them engineers. There is no need for computer engineers. IT people have difficulties finding long-term employment in the US today.  High end math is too much to set a short-term goal. Even some knowledge of the elementary math by everybody  (esp. government officials and Wall Street CEO-s) would transform the society.
