ORIGINAL: brainiacsub But education = socialism, unless we are teaching the Bible. Have you not been following these threads? It's worth mentioning that your country did a u turn on creationism and actually started teaching proper science again in the late '50s when it looked like the Godless commies in the USSR were winning the space race, isn't it? Moon, the Christian right has never given up on teaching creationism in this country, and most people still don't know anything about science. Why are we so stupid? As someone who has spent a lot of time opposing the teaching of creationism and other anti intellectual movements I think part of it is ingrained in the American culture. We devote a lot of our sense of self in the idea that we're all equal which sometimes becomes a rejection of the expertise of others. We see that with things like the truthers rejecting all the studies by engineers on the subject. Some of it is of course that the US is very religious country with a large subgroup who believes that the bible is accurate in every detail cover to cover. In order for this to be true the overwhelming mass of the physical sciences must be rejected as either wrong or at best wrongly interpreted. Another factor is most scientists, by the very nature of who goes into research, are terrible communicators. Without the likes of Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov doing the heavy lifting of popularizing science it is much harder to spread the word about what science has done lately.
