I know that there are many types of masters and respect that everyone has their own way of doing things. My personal opinion of what a master should be is a very mature and responsible person. You don't assume the title, You earn it by action and discipline and know for sure that you are one when the time comes to be a master. You take care of your submissive and promote their personal well being (I use the word personal because there are many types of submissive, all with different aspects of happiness and a well being). You know your submissive like no other and they have an understanding of you. You are proud of who and what you are. No matter what the situation, especially in bad ones, you can assume control in a sophisticated manner. You are wise and very knowledgeable. And above all, you protect your submissive and wear your title as "Master" with dignity and pride.

I don't consider myself a Master, but I've been referred as to being one at times.  I feel I can only get that entitlement from my submissive, and though some here might think it not so "domly"; I think one should try earning that title before self-appointing oneself with it.  I hear that is the way most leaders get to be leaders, by earning it in some manner...Generals, Presidents, and even spiritual leaders.  All have someone that puts enough faith in them to elect and entitle this person based on whatever criteria:  be it deeds performed, acts of leadership, or even on faith alone from a promise...there needs to be trust that this person is worthy of their decision in making them the leader of their immediacy.

He-Man (Master of the Universe) once explained it as being like the "Karate Kid" movies with sex involved instead of fighting. However, this greatly conflicts with what Vampires and Goreans believe. There's a lot of Master(de)bating going on.

I couldn't agree more! I have to say that my jackass detector goes off whenever I see that someone has appointed themselves "master".

The "master" thing doesn't do it for me at all though, as with "Sir" or (worse) "Lord" it always seems faintly silly. That said, if a dominant and a sumbissive want to use the title, then fair play to them.

I am a Dom and I believe that a Master travels a journey much like that of a Master in Martial Arts. You go through levels (through physical, metal, spiritual journeys) to attain your black belt. Black belt would be BDSM's equivalent to a Dom by travelling a similliar path. Then after years of studying, practicing, perfecting technique, and self-realization, you achieve Master. The life in BDSM is very much cut from the same cloth.
As in many Martial Arts, you are either in it to cause pain or for self-realization and growth.

I am the Master of myself, my fate, and my needs and lusts and the creative application of my sexual agression. I was awarded the title by several girls saying it to me at the moment of orgasm before I reached 19. I had been tying girls up for years at that point. I was born naughty and all this erotic mischief is what has sweetened my life in all the times I would describe myself as truly happy.
