Interesting video: So A Man In Plain Clothes And An Unmarked Car Cuts You Off And Pulls A Gun... By Armed Liberal on April 14, 2010 12:57 AM \| *** Surprisingly, I'm not necessarily worried about this cop stopping a motorcyclist while in an unmarked car, in plain clothes, with a gun pulled out (that's a discussion all to its self)... what is wrong about this is what the state did to the cyclist after he got a ticket. I think we need a Constitutional amendment ensuring that any citizen has the right to photograph and record any public official in the execution of their duties. Especially in public areas. Comments? Thoughts? Firm

Don't you think we can do that now? I mean, is there a prohibition? And yeah, I think that the right to protect yourself against this bullshit (which is very common) is granted under the 'against unreasonable search and seizure' clause (which has been gutted) and especially these para-military government forces are way the fuck outta line a great deal of the time. I would almost support a bill that if you aint got a stop on tape (and independant verification that it hasnt been tampered with), it didnt happen period. Ron

HunterS, Agreed somewhat, with caveats: It has been my experience that the local neckties are reluctant to go after their 'system' side, it is sorta like shitting where you eat. And the money and fame is not there to bring voiceboxes in from outta town too often. Ron

I wonder if the law against recording police actions is an attempt to prevent information from getting to criminals and putting law enforcement in danger? I could see this if it were a stand off where a criminal had access to a radio or television. But in this case they may be within the law but not using good sense. I’ll bet it will be thrown out of court when a judge sees it because the charge does not match the reason for the law in the first place. Butch

It in this country has always been known those who volunteer to become police do not always have the right intentions, hence the saying ; It takes a thief to catch a thief. In some quarters, police are seen to be thugs in uniform, a perfect situation, they can beat you and charge you, what you say means a whole lot less, if anything at all than the version offered by a man in uniform, i.e. the police.

I hope that is not true...at least in general. Myself I do believe the vast majority of police are good citizens that want to provide a safe environment for their families. I personally have known and worked with many officers in my city and they are all good people. I do think after awhile on the force they often become jaded and think the worse of everyone. I bet you would too when you have to deal with the public and enforce the law. The good ones realize this and try to control it…but it is a problem that comes with the job. Butch

Protecting police officers is one of the main reasons for this law. Videotaping them puts them more at risk to be threatened with violence. All their audio is recorded and most departments now have video in their cars as well. This information must be given to the defense if requested. Of course in this case it was an off duty officer so no audio or video would have been recorded…this is a rare case I believe. Butch

On the list of the top 100 most dangerous jobs in America where are the police on that list?

Rodney King...ring a bell??????? Some bystander took a video of the incident. Cops thought no one was around, so they could do, whatever. Now, why do you think the cops and political guys want to take your guns....and rights ? To make things safer....for who? I know a guy, a pro-photog, taking pics on assigment, approached by two squad cars, they wanted his (EXPENSIVE CAMERA) on the cause he was.....taking pictures of a building? On assignment from the contractor who built the building, the photog, photographing for the contractor's brochure. The guy with the gun...and the right to use it whenever...rules. No gun, you lose.

Isn't that odd though? You ought to google Copwatchers. Filming police is a right and a necessity. There is nowhere near enough accountability for police, but with a digital camera and YouTube, unarmed citizens can force the issue.
