I think a bio weapon on US is much more likely.

Even as it is the govt does odd experiments.   Even in 2010.

So-  best plan- is keep your self in good shape.  --

Commercial reprocessing is currently not practiced in the United States, although it has been allowed in the past.

Guess what? It's starting again.

As I've been telling you, I just heard the director of the project talking about it on NPR this week.

Vince I am not against this proposal...but neither do I want us to absorb the cost alone. If these nations want to store their waste in the US they should pay for it and we should demand they do.

I don't know what the cost structure is, Butch. It may be we would off-set the cost by the electricity we produce. But, I have wondered why Russia cannot downblend their own. Maybe someone can explain that to me.

Yes, no commercial reprocessing is occuring now but military reprocessing is.

In the best of all possible worlds wind and solar would be our exclusive source of energy for conversion to electricity but long term problems remain before that can happen, not the least of which is efficiency lost in transmission from the wind and solar belts to the East coast and northern tier States; inadequate storage technology; and huge amounts of land space required. Furthermore, does anyone know how electricity will provide the power needed to fly commercial and military aircraft and drive civilian automobiles and commercial trucks over great distances? Do the alternative energy people envision a world ultimately dependent on trolly cars and high speed rail with no one permitted (by law or cost) to own an automobile? What is the vision for the future, I wonder.

Vince I think Obama wants the waste here for safe keeping and has offered that option to the nuclear powers...it has nothing to do with reprocessing except that to show the waste is dangerous which was my point.

I think the technology for solar and wind power is very good today...much better than nuclear. Remember solar could mean every roof in America...imagine the jobs this would create...and the power put back into the existing grid would be tremendous.

If you lowered the demand for oil there would still be enough for aircraft and the like. Personal vehicles could use any of the new technologies in electric or hydrogen fuel cells. Imagine the jobs the conversion would fuel.

Butch, I think we have strayed from the OP in discussing fissile storage and alternative fuels. My fault.

Back to the OP. The Communique from the Nuclear Summit does not include anything about means of storage nor about downblending and reuse that I could see when I read it. A few countries have commited to send their fissile material to us (not warheads) The Communique recognizes the responsibility of each nation to account for and protect their loose fissile materials by 2014. A first step maybe but gotta wonder how effective and comforting it is.

The Christian Science Monitor has a recent article reporting the estimate of 1.6 million kilograms of Uranium [HEU] lying around in the world and half a million kg of plutonium. All weapons grade material - loose nukes; not warheads.

Only 25 kg of U-235 are needed to make one bomb and only 8 kg of Pu to make one crude bomb.

The problem is to keep this stuff secure from non-State groups (terrorists gangs) Otherwise some city somewhere in the world will be fucked.

This thread is useless.

The nukes are going to be privatized.

Wake up - zombies!

mnottertail -> RE: World Isn't Prepared For Nuclear Threat (4/15/2010 10:23:49 AM)

To what fucking end?  And you are the one that needs out of the coma, hunkie.

pahunkboy -> RE: World Isn't Prepared For Nuclear Threat (4/15/2010 10:25:53 AM)

Dude- we owe 67 tril.$

How does it get paid?

We sell off the house.

mnottertail -> RE: World Isn't Prepared For Nuclear Threat (4/15/2010 10:31:45 AM)

It will be more cost effective to relieve you of your silver and gold to pay that, then to dismantle our military or privatize it further.  Ain't crappinin, sport.

Actually bombs consist of silver.  (up to 700 oz each)

I am doing my part for the war effort.   ;-/

This thread is not about "the nukes" hunkie. It is about the shit that makes the nukes. Try to stay focused.
