Status: offline 		Hello all, my gf and I have started branching out our bdsm side, I use to think I was fully sub but now that shes in my life Ive been leaning towards switch...anyways I personally loved wax play, and want to introduce her to it, where do I find candles that are safe?

Also http://paddleyourdrawers.com/Products.htm has some as well again hand made specifically for wax play.

Status: offline 		Yeah, definitely use purposely made candles. Shop brought candles can be ridiculously harsh especially if you want to drop some on your... lower regions

Status: offline 		I am a little old school here, I test the candle and the distance to flesh on myself.  The further the wax drip falls the cooler it is.

Others may not agree here, but I've been to a few classes over the years and have seen and participated in wax play before; and a very good source for suitable wax can be found in the local dollar store or grocery store with the novena candles there.  These are the religious candles sold in glass containers, and they are of the correct type of wax and even with the coloring at the temps I'm talking about, will not hurt on any level really.  You don't have to light them up and have an open flame. 

You can use a heating device:  a crock pot with water will do.  Let the heat slowly melt the wax candle, and you can still it a little to make it more uniformly melted.  At this point, you would do well with a tarp or shower curtain to catch the drippings (also found at the same places mentioned above), and you can distribute the melted wax in a number of ways.  Pouring, brushing with a paint brush, ladle, spoon...you get the point.  Clean up can be very fun with a good blade (sharp and be careful) or some creative peeling.  But one thing to bear in mind (which is the last thing here without getting more in-depth) but actually the first thing to think of:  Put a little baby oil on your subject, to the wax will come off easier.  Good luck, and have fun.

Depends on what they are made out of. Different waxes burn at different temperatures. We usually use the dollar store ones that come in a jar, but usually test them before we play. I love the colors. I have also used baby oil on the skin before to make removal easier.

I've seen candles with dyes being used for wax play, are you sure it's not just the scented oil?

Those are the ones I use.  They work well and are CHEAP.

If you want the scent of burning candles just get the scented kind and DON'T use them for play, put them in a little different area out of reach.

I'm not an expert but I do know it's the TYPE of wax that melts at different temperatures.
Of course additives, like scents or oils change the melting point.

What I noticed is the softer the wax, the lower the melting point, candles that are really hard, need a higher melting point.

Status: offline 		the taper candles that everyone suggests melt at about 140 degrees or so. add another 5 if they're dyed or colored. they're safe to use if you start dripping from like 3' up or so. usually people get down to about 18" but less than that and you might burn, plus you don't want to jump to harsh too fast. unscented tea candles are also popular and many people start with those. the candles made for bdsm melt at like 120, so you can use them closer. and they're not as harsh. DON'T use beeswax candles. they don't melt until like 180 or so and they will leave burns. what I'd suggest to begin with is canning wax at the grocery store. like 3 bucks for a pound or so, you'll have to heat it in something else. get the regular stuff, refined parrafin wax burns a little hotter. make sure you heat it in or above water (if you have a double boiler) to make sure it doesn't catch on fire in the pan. probably a pot of water with a glass jar of wax floating in it. be careful when picking up the jar. make sure there are still solid bits to the wax when you use it, or that the top has started to crust over. that way you know it's at melting temperature and not a lot hotter. then yeah,

one she didn't mention is that finger painting is also fun if you don't mind a little pain. I'd also strongly suggest a blindfold.
P.S. it's been a while since I read up on waxplay so while the temperature values should be relatively accurate, they're probably off a bit so don't quote me lol.

Status: offline 		What you want is paraffin wax, it melts at a lower temperature then other waxes.  You can find candles or as another poster mentioned jarring wax or at the local beauty supply you can buy blocks of it for melting... they also offer a plug in warmer that keeps the wax at an ideal temp for use.  The stuff from the beauty supply also gives the added benefit of leaving the skin incredibly soft and conditioned and comes off a bit easier then other types of paraffin wax.

Status: offline 		Soy candles (or paraffin) generally tend to burn at a lower temperature. Try to avoid those tall decorative table candles - most of the ones I have tried tend to burn rather hot.
