Apparently some hospitals routinely call security to remove non-family-members from the room: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/12/how-hospitals-treat-same-sex-couples/

I seriously have never run into a problem on this in Central PA. I know it could happen- but most staff is pretty cool and do not want to upset the patient.

Nurses are pretty tuned in to human -needs- and I never seen one that- would on purpose harm someone.
