The changing-room in Liberty's and Noel Gallagher was helping Patsy Kensit choose a frock. They were more embarrassed than I was.

Carol Channing. I was walking past a local restaurant and a limo pulled up and she got out. I stood there literally star struck squealing how wonderful she looked. She was amused and very kind.

In other restaurants I've been seated next to celebrities. If they were alone for the moment, I've leaned over and told them how much I liked their work. Have always had a thank you. But I've never interrupted a meal or conversation.

Several years before that, we saw a bunch of WWF guys eating in a truckstop along the I-57. They were on their way to Chicago. We walked in to use the bathroom on a road trip and I happened to glance into the greasy spoon and saw a table full of the largest human beings I'd ever seen in my life. One loomed particularly large. My eyes widened and I yelled "DAD ANDRE THE GIANT IS EATING IN THERE!****"

LOL

reading this made me remember my own meeting with Andre. such a gentle giant! and his girl friend at the time barely came above his waist (great bennies there, though, at my young age, i didnt get it at the time). i was working at a donut place, and he owned a place just outside of town. i often saw him, man he loved the apple fritters we made!

i also spent some time outside of LA.. anaheim to be exact. I met stars like Nick Cage ( a very nervous man over his son, as i recall. his kid got up to go to the bathroom, and when he didnt come back quickly enough, dad got up to go find him)

Hillary Duff was another... her and her friends came into the amusement park i worked in ( not the one with ears, the other). she was a cutie, even behind her glasses that were way too large for her face.

Pam Anderson was another (this one at the park with the ears). No make-up, with the kids in tow. Very sweet yet again, at least with the staff.

Then there was Lebron James when i worked in Ohio. His fav dinner is Waffle House. He and his girl friend used to come in at least once a month. Man, he is tall, was always soft spoken, very curteous, and tipped well.

In 2000-2001, i worked a party for the LA Clipper team. It was wives to one side, girl friends to the other side, cheerleaders almost in between... then the guys. You would think they would be swilling the brew, but i ended up running all over the park hunting herbal tea for most of them. They signed autographs for all the servers and tipped us nicely.

But, in all these situations, i never once asked for an autograph. there were there to enjoy, not to be hounded. I think most appreciated that. Having served many of them more than once, they asked for me by name and always added a little extra.

~ETA

I almost forgot that i met recently Franco Harris at the asian restaurant i work in Pittsburgh. I didnt even know who he was till my manager told me.. after the man left. lol. seen him in a few more times. again, very gracious and a notable absence of a huge ego.

When I worked at Babydoll's Ft. Worth, Pantera used to come in all the time. They weren't so hot, but one time they brought in Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains! AAAAAAA!!!!! He was totally fucking awesome! I had such a crush on him! He signed my left titty. Too bad I had to wash it off before I went home. Why can't I meet anybody like that when I'm single? I SO wanted to go home with him!

I also met Wilford Brimley and sat in his lap, but big fuckin' deal, he wasn't cute. I didn't have him sign me, either, and the asshole didn't tip at all. Maybe a $20. BFD!

The building I work in has been used to shoot some big movies, so I've had the opportunity to meet some of Hollywood's A list. They've all been nice enough.

My favorite stories are with basketball players though. A few years ago, I attended a benefit dinner and Charles Barkley was there. He ended up eating part of his dinner (salad, to be specific) at our table and was wonderful - smart, witty, funny and down to earth. He didn't punch anyone

And before he was famous....I used to play 'HORSE' with Scott Burrell, who would go on to the NBA and win a championship with the Chicago Bulls.

Kind of pertinent for me personally to come across this thread as I am still mourning the victims of the plane crash near Smolensk which claimed almost 100 lives including the late President Lech Kaczynski. I had met the late President and a number of others who died on that flight and lost a former employer - Jerzy Szmajdzinski. Many were the political elite which together with the current Polish government all came from the Polish Solidarity movement.

It brought back memories, my own, memories of their rise to success, memories of Poland and how it had changed, and the splits and squabbles in the politics which had led to splits and conflicts in society.

It brought it home just how short life really is, and just how few opportunities we can fit into it before we either become too old or we die. In those 15 years after the victory of Solidarity over communism I realised just how far we had got away from the defining concept - solidarity with each other - moved towards conflict and disagreement, and towards political left and political right.

Things have changed and I now see left, and right, not as anything more than a starting point in politics. Neither side makes for a good religion. Arguing for one side now seems silly and irrelevant. Life is far more important.

If there was anyone who was known or famous who I would hold in awe I can only think of one person, a person who is no longer with us, but a person who having met I feel that my life is blessed.

That person is Marek Edelman, a Jewish-Polish political and social activist and cardiologist. Edelman survived the Warsaw Ghetto in the Second World War and as a Bund youth leader he formed the Jewish Combat Organization together with Mordechai Anielewicz and replaced Anielewicz as leader when Anielewicz was killed. He led and survived the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and later took part in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.

Edelman was among the first to join the Polish Solidarity movement and took part in the Round Table talks in 1989 which brought an end to communism in Poland.

Of the 29 members of the Polish Solidarity movement who were present at the Round Table talks in 1989 which influenced the downfall of communism in Eastern Europe I have had personal contact or dealings with seven of these people, including Marek Edelman, Lech Kaczynski and Adam Michnik.

I cannot even put into words how this has influenced my life.

I don't but my daughter met her favorite singing group when she was 11. We were on our way home for a "Blockbuster Night" when she heard on the radio the group was due to fly in to a local airport about 25 miles away for a concert. She literally got on her knees in the car begging me to take her. (Luckily we were at a stop light) Of course I took her & her best friend. The group was then known as "Immature". Romeo, Batman & LDB aka Little Drummer Boy.
I knew we would get separated in the mad rush of screaming girls so I arranged for them to meet me back at the car. The girl's chased them all the way from the gate to the shuttle & then I lost them. When we met up at the car the girl's told me that my daughter got on the shuttle but her friend was stopped. One of the group member's & the manager said to let the girl on & they got to sit knees to knees w/these guys.
When the shuttle arrived at their stop, of course they were chased to their waiting vehicle where one of the members lost his visor thus a tug of war ensued bet my daughter & a security guard for the visor. The guard won
Lol, needless to say the girl's were in 7th Heaven!

When I was celebrating my 21st b'day at a hotel bar/disco w/friends, we saw the group Journey complete w/Steve Perry a few tables away. They seemed to be enjoying themselves & acting decent w/the fans. I wasn't one of them so I didn't approach their tables but my friends did. One friend damn near bumped into Steve Perry on the way in. I thought she was going to fall off the ramp in shock!

My mother worked out at the same gym that Jimmie Walker did & said he was a real snob. Very full of himself. Yes, that was during his JJ era.
Wait a minute....I thought you were a virgin?

She's adopted, yeah that's the tick, adopted.

No shit?  Did you fuck him?  I'm a Lost fanatic so the thought that I know somebody (even if it is just electronicaly) who had anything to do with anything with the cast of Lost is really cool.  I wonder, could Naveen be a BDSMer?  Perhaps even somebody here on Collarme?  I wonder who it could be?

-------------------

I've had two encounters, both back in my cab driving days many years ago.

The first happened after I had droped off a fare at a hotel in Buffalo and was just starting to head back to Lockport when I was waved over by one of the hotel doorman (technically I am not supposed to accept pickups outside my home territory but when you work for commisions and tips you tend to have a lax attitude toward the rules).  He told me the passenger needed to get to the airport pronto.  So as I'm racing to the airport I keep looking in my rearview mirror thinking, is that who I think it is?  He must have been used to that kind of response because after a couple of minutes he smiled, laughed a little and told me that yes, he was who I thought he was.  I told him that I was actually violating state regulations with this pickup to which he replied, "well my friend, fuck that.  Rules were made to be broken, especially the stupid ones."  I got him to the airport on time and he gave me a very generous tip of fifty bucks.  Thus ended my encounter with Jack Nicholson.

I am not sure if my other encounter counts because the person involoved is considered infamous rather than famous.  I was sent to the Buffalo airport to pick up a soldier who had just returned from active duty in the Gulf war (the first one).  Although he did gripe about the assholes at "headquarters" and "in the government," nothing about him struck me as truly hateful or insane.  The dude has just been in a war, I thought, he's entitled to be a bit off kilter.  Nothing about him suggested that I had a soon to be mass murder in my cab.  I droped him off at his home in Pendelton and pretty much forgot about him - just another passenger (and a lousy tipper at that).  Then one day I opened a newspaper and realized that I had had Timothy McVeigh in my cab.

ETA: oh yeah, I once knocked over then head coach of the Buffalo Bills Marv Levey who was coming out of a convenience store as I was rushing in (I had the runs and needed to get some Pepto Bismal fast!).  He was quite congenial about it and jokingly offered me a place on the defence's starting line-up.

Absolutely not, did not fuck him lol - I shared the flat with my boyfriend, Naveen and two other guys. Rents are astronomical in London and young professionals straight out of university tend to share flats to cut down the monthly outgoings. Naveen had gone to the same high school as one of our flatmates and he needed a place to kip for a few months. He had just finished filming The Buddha of Suburbia so I was quite star-struck (didn't last, he was so fucked up) . He is far, far more gorgeous in real life that on film though.

I know things about Naveen that would make your eyes water, but BDSM? I seriously doubt it. He didn't have that kind of vibe at all. One thing is for sure: he's dead into older (much older) women. He actually had a baby with his maths teacher when he was just sixteen years old.

In the mid 80s me and my boyfriend and future husband at the time were well-known bodybuilders in Hawaii. He was more famous than I but we were friends with Arnold Schwarzenegger who had not yet achieved movie super stardom and was still very much involved with the bodybuildig community. Bill Phillips, the Body for Life guy, was also a personal friend of ours. Later, in the 90s we also knew many of the hollywoood action stars who used to work out at Golds Gym in Venice Beach- Lou Ferrigno, Sylvester and Frank Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, and others.

While still in Hawaii in the 80s, we knew an entertainment promoter who gave us private access to a gym so we could work out and avoid the crowds. One summer the boy band Menudo was on tour there and the same promoter let them use the gym to reherse. They showed up while my ex and I were there, and the boys quickly befriended him because of his stature and the fact that he was also Puerto Rican. Ricky Martin was 12 at the time and fell in love with my ex. The band manager had a hard time getting Ricky to focus on the rehersal because all he wanted to do was hang out with my boyfriend. I was a bit amused last week when the news broke that Ricky was in fact gay. I called my ex and we had a good laugh about it.

In the 90s I worked for Disney Imagineering and worked with Robin Williams and Rhea Perlman who did voice overs for some of the animatronic robots I was building for EuroDisney. Danny Devito, Rhea's husband, often came to the set to hang out.

I have lived a charmed life.

I hung out with Dave Robinson the drummer for "The Cars" growing up. He got us a gig in Boston once in about 1968 but it was the wrong crowd. We had long hair and there were a bunch of guys who were longshoremen many of them recently back from Vietnam and the beer bottles started flying before the first song ended!
We got out of there quick and the beer bottles were smashing in the street behind us as we ran! I said; "Dave, how the hell did you get us this gig?"
He said; "Run Tom, Run!"
I know the members of "Altan" an Irish band. Very nice and down to earth.
I met Pat Buchanan and his sister Angela (Bay) at a party once very nice and very funny the both of them.
I met Sen. John Sununu in Exeter, N.H. once and spoke with him for about ten minutes, he was very polite and knowledgable.
When I was in the Coast Guard we got a tour of George Bush's house in Maine by the secret service who we worked with providing security.
I met Bonnie Raiit at a house party after a concert in the late 70's. Her crazy days.
Eric Bogosian the actor is from my hometown and was two or three years behind me in school. I 'd see him around but didn't know him.
And I met Ken Burns the film maker when I lived in N.H. once, very nice and personable.
All the "famous" people I've met all seemed very nice.

I met Gloria Estefan at a CD/DVD signing in Amsterdam, of all places, back in 2004.  I was so impressed by how friendly and down-to-earth she was.  She actually talked to me personally and shook my hand.  Her husband, Emilio, also came out and talked to those who were waiting in line. Very very nice people.
