Just remembered, if anyone from the NE Ohio area remembers the Michael Stanley Band from the late 70's......they did a concert at the college I was attending, and Michael Stanley came over to the radio station for an interview during my shift.  I got to run the controls while someone else interviewed him live on the air.  He was nice, said "How you doin'?" to me, lol.

I thought I saw Jarvis Cocker once at a club in London, but it turned out to just be some other super-emaciated dude with enormous sunglasses.

Met him! He's an absolute dude, and he got on extremely well with my mother.

A mate pointed out the other day that I judge all the famous people I've ever met by how they treat mum. I'm not going to list any others, though, just in case someone really up on UK music figures out who my family are.

(Before you accuse me of being paranoid, that *happened* on the other side once).

ORIGINAL: brainiacsub Later, in the 90s we also knew many of the hollywoood action stars who used to work out at Golds Gym in Venice Beach- Lou Ferrigno, Sylvester and Frank Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, and others.

The one on Hampton? That's the original Gold's, isn't it? I work out there when I'm in LA, because I usually stay in Santa Monica and it's only a mile or so. It's still infested with stars. I never knew Jeff Goldblum was so big. He looks skinny in his movies, but he's freakin' huge. Not really what you'd call well-built anymore (looks like his age and the Hollywood lifestyle have caught up with him), but he looks as though he was a serious bodybuilder at some point in his life.

I once met someone interesting about a mile north of there, on the Santa Monica beach. I was just trucking down the beach, waiting for the sunset, and coming from the other direction I saw this dumpy little guy ambling toward me. I thought he was a bum, from the way he was dressed, and was quite surprised when he strolled past a trash can without stopping to root around in it. I kept looking at him, because he seemed so incongruous - he was dressed like he just got kicked off a boxcar, but had this weird, above-it-all presence to him. It was like he was walking 3 feet off the ground, head back, calm smile on his face, not a care in the world.

So I'm watching him come closer, and by this time he sees that  I'm looking at him, so he's looking back at me with this quizzical little smile on his face. Which made me even more curious. As he got about 15 feet away, and we were looking right each other, I could see a little tease in the smile; sort of an "are you going to figure it out?" look. And there was something about the twinkle of the eye... all of a sudden, just as we drew abreast of each other, it hit me like a brick - "Jesus christ, that's Dustin Hoffman!"

The instant I got it, his face lit up with a big, warm, "you spotted me!" smile. I grinned back at him, nodded, and waved as we passed. I figured he was just out for a walk on the beach, like i was, and he had the right to enjoy himself without being pestered. But I kept thinking about it, how remarkable it was that I'd just exchanged a wave and a nod with one my all time favorite actors, and was really disappointed that I hadn't even had a chance to talk with him.

And about 20 minutes later, I'm standing there with my camera watching the sun set, hoping to catch a picture of the green flash - which i'd just seen the day before for the first time in my life. As I'm watching  the sunset, with my camera ready just in case, I heard this rich, luxurious Voice from about 5 feet to my right. He was just standing there. I don't remember what he said; something about taking pictures of sunsets. I told him I was hoping to get a picture of the green flash, that I'd just seen one the day before and was hoping that since the atmospheric conditions were the same, I might get lucky. He'd never heard of it before, but seemed interested, so I explained it, and we talked for quite a few minutes about a number of things.

He's a very intelligent guy, and extremely perceptive. He doesn't miss much. Very low-key, calm, personable, just a genuinely nice human being. Very interesting conversationalist; one of those people who, no matter what you're talking about, you're going to find it fascinating, because you never know where he's going to take it next. I can't even remember all the things we talked about, but the one thing I never brought up was the fact that he was Dustin Hoffman. I figured that if he felt it was important, he'd bring it up himself, and if he didn't I was going to respect his privacy. Of course he knew that I knew who I was talking to, and he did mention the film industry a number of times, but I never talked about who he was.

I think that he kind of appreciated that, but there were a million questions I was dying  to ask, and wish the situation would have been such that I'd felt comfortable doing so. If nothing else, I'd have liked to have at least told him how much I've appreciated his work over the years, and how much it's meant to me, but in the end I felt I had to leave it unsaid. Maybe someday I'll get another chance. Great guy. I could have stood there listening to that voice until I toppled over from starvation. Turns out he's originally from Santa Monica, but I never knew that before. Never knew what a tiny man he is, either, which I'm betting is part of the reason nobody who walked past us that entire time seemed to have any idea who he was.

Brad Pitt was another guy in that same vein. I met him here in Minnesota 10 or 12 years ago. Can't remember why he was here, but he was  in town for a couple-three weeks, and he worked out almost every day at the YMCA where I was a member. He said he was bulking up for a movie, which i think was probably "Troy."  Not many people recognized him, because he doesn't look anything like Brad Pitt when he's working out. Just looks like another guy with a baseball cap and 3-day beard. He was a really nice guy, quiet, friendly, actually kind of shy. Very soft-spoken. We talked about restaurants and golf courses; apparently he likes to golf, and was excited about all the good courses we have in the Cities.

Emilio Estevez was another. I met him while he was in Minneapolis filming "The Mighty Ducks." I took a day off from work for some reason, and my girlfriend and I decided to catch a matinee of "Bugsy." As we were going in, he was coming out, and I asked him how the film was. He looked kind of detached and distracted until i asked him how he like the movie, and then he snapped to attention. That got his interest, and he warmed right up to the subject. I didn't realize who he was until he started talking, and then I was just blown away by the level of detail with which he discussed the film and the performances. That was a great conversation for someone who loves movies as much as i do. He wasn't a really outgoing guy - kind of reserved and self-contained, but he loved talking about movies.

Oh, and Matt Dillon. He was filming something here about 5 years ago, and they were using our offices as a set for 3 days. We mixed with the actors and crew for much of the week, and they were all terrific people, except for him. Quite a prima dona. He seemed very impressed with himself, and he was probably the only person in the building who was. One young secretary was just giddy over the chance to meet him, and when she asked him excitedly but quite courteously for an autograph, he rolled his eyes and said something like, "oh, christ," before signing. I don't think anyone who worked there has a good memory of him, and members of the crew spent a lot of time following him around and apologizing to us for his attitude.

That is exactly the gym I'm talking about. Many people would go there to "star gaze" but my ex quickly befriended many of those guys because of his reputation within the bodybuilding world, which was quite popular as a sport in the 60s-80s. Many of these guys wanted to work out with him or have him train them. Jeff Goldblum was a regular and the ex would occasionaly train with him before the filming of Jurassic Park. Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen and Matt Dillon were also regulars. They were very young back then, but so were we.

Stallone and Snipes did some dumb futuristic action movie together (can't recall the name of it at the moment) and many of the bodybuilders from Golds had bit parts in that movie. They wanted the ex to do the movie with them but he had other obligations at the time.

Many of these guys had incredible egos and some were not so nice, except when they were around others they believed to at least be their equal. Then they would sit around and drink and laugh and congratulate each other on being masters of the universe.

When I was 18 I "dated" Neil Young for about 3 months and met quite a few people in the music industry through him... Bonnie Raite and Chris Isaak both played at the venue I had in San Francisco... Kevin Spacey fell for a friend of mine here in Ibiza and took a grouo of us out to dinner, my crush on him only grew...he is the coolest man, but to my great disappointment gay...[:(]

One of my best friends was the bass player for Prince for the first 9 years...and the lovely Sarah Main, resident DJ for Pascha, throws the best after hours parties and is a wonderful friend. I've attended parties at Mick Jagers daughter's villa, Jade, who is incredibly unpretentious...

The only celeb I've met that was a total wanker was P. Diddy... the rest have been amazing.

Hi, Melvin! Welcome to the message boards! Who've you met that's famous (other than Brainiacsub)?

slvemike4u -> RE: Have you ever met someone famous who turned out to be totally awesome? (4/16/2010 4:51:12 PM)

Sheeesh and your supposed to be brainy and all..."Demolition Man"...and it wasn't that bad given the genre. [:-]

ShoreBound149 -> RE: Have you ever met someone famous who turned out to be totally awesome? (4/16/2010 4:56:30 PM)

I rented Beetlejuice for 6 hours to hang out with in Atlantic City.

He was frighteningly awesome.

brainiacsub -> RE: Have you ever met someone famous who turned out to be totally awesome? (4/16/2010 5:09:08 PM)

Yeah, that was it...and it really was that bad.

Panda, I'm hardly what you'd call famous...I just had alot of Forrest Gump moments growing up.

Ah, here's another one...before I met my future ex husband to be, I was seduced and had a brief love affair with a world renowned professional surfer who I met in Hawaii while he was there to compete in the Billabong Triple Crown. Fast forward 20 yrs, and I find out that he was one of the original Z-Boys who's life story was told in the Sean Pean documentary "Dogtown and Z-Boys" and the 2005 movie Lords of Dogtown. I told my 16 yr old son, who was an avid skateboarder and huge fan of the movie, about the affair before I had met his father, and got in touch with the guy through MySpace so my son could talk to him. It's the only time I think I was ever cool with my son. He certainly saw me in a different light after that.

You're all a bunch of unrepentant name droppers.....and as such should be ashamed of yourselves.
Pathetic...the lot of you [:'(]

Funny. I think some of those guys are still members there. I've seen Charlie Sheen there, and you're right, it's full of stargazers. Half the people there look like bobblehead dolls, the way their heads keep spinning around while they're working out. Was Nicolas Cage a member when you were there? I've seen him there, and he's another one who's clearly serious about free weights. Or at least he was a couple of years ago. Ron Perlman works out there (that face is hard to miss), and I'm pretty sure I've seen Keanu Reeves and Matt Broderick there. Plus a few people who I recognize from movies and TV shows, but don't know who they are. You know how it is out there - every now and then, you see a face you know you recognize, but they're not famous enough to know their name. But you don't want to bother them, so you just keep walking.

But yeah, that's the place to go if you want to stare at these folks. In fact, Venice as a whole is probably the best place in LA to see celebrities, if someone wants to do that. Much better than Hollywood. The boardwalk is just crawling with movie stars and musicians, and people just walk right past them because they don't notice them in that context. I almost wiped out on my rollerblades one Friday night, skating down the boardwalk at around 9 PM when there were hardly any pedestrians left, and I was so shocked to see Eric Clapton at one of those sidewalk cafes. Skated right past him, locked eyes with him, and just went "WTF?" Distracted me just long enough to hit a pavement seam in the half-dark, and I almost went down face first.

I did not know Nicholas Cage personally but he was part of that inner circle at the time. My ex and I split in the early 90s. He remained a part of that world for several more years, but I went my own way and did my own thing. I haven't kept up with any of it except for the occasional story relayed by my ex. Now, it's like Mike said - it's all a bunch of gratuitous name dropping and fun stories.

winterlight -> RE: Have you ever met someone famous who turned out to be totally awesome? (4/16/2010 5:28:50 PM)

I won't name names but I was in a bookstore and a well known Comedian was in there buying books for his college classes. I didn't say anything to him but my Dad did. He didn't want to be bothered and to me he came across as pretentious. I don't think much of him.. There wasn't anybody in the store but us and him and the clerk. I do understand people not wanting to be bothered during their private time. We weren't asking for an autograph etc.

Met a famous British ice skating pair and she was absolutely wonderful to talk to. Such a delight. I wish they were still skating they were the best team I had ever seen in my life and still feel that way. Nobody can compare to their magic on ice. They always got a 10 by me! :)

Saw a famous singer in a restaurant she was with a political person. He made sure the whole restaurant heard hm. That was the only 2nd time I had asked for an autograph. She didn't want to give it to me but since I stood there and hadn't heard her reply...She gave me one.

Since I am older I would never ask for an autograph of anybody. Since I see the way the press treat them (some deserve it, some do not), following them like pirahna at a feeding frenzy I would hate to have that kind of life.

I'm not big on celebrity worship, but Naveen Andrews is one sexy beast!  I don't know if I wouldn't have been sleep walking into his room (accidentally of course!) every night!

Do you ever get some kind of weird 'post-prescience'? Because... that's very close to what actually happened. Naveen barged into our room one night, high as a kite, ranting and raving, and then proceeded to lie himself down upon our prone bodies. His close friend, our other flatmate, had to intervene and get him out of our room. I know he is a very sexy and attractive man - I saw him close-up. That night though, he was sad, lost and very fucked up :-( .
