AS some may know I am a survey interviewer (in other words a professional annoyance) and recently we have been doing a whole pile of surveys for health insurance. Me and my coworkers have noticed an interesting trend. One of the questions asks people to rate their plan on a scale of 1-10. What we have noticed is that the more the people need their plan, the less they like it, those who have become seriously ill dislike their plans, and those who have not become ill like them just fine.

I'm not sure exactly what this means except that dealing with health insurance companies when you actually need the coverage is a painful thing in and of itself, that adds stress and worry to people who are already in a worrisome situation.

Mr. Arpig, are you conducting this survey among American or Canadian consumers?

I've done this before and the answer is definitely he is conducting the surveys with Americans.

The important question is who is he doing this survey for? And the answer to this question is they don't tell the people who are doing the survey who it was for but usually you can tell by the questions.

Personally I think it's for a big American insurance company like Blue Cross and they are going to use the results to attack health care reform.

Americans (currently Florida & Pennsylvania), and its basically a satisfaction survey regarding certain programs, so i doubt that its destined for anything other than deciding whether or not to axe said program. My observations are based solely on that one question in an otherwise innocuous survey.

Im going with the notion that those who have yet had to navigate the world of insurance companies feel their coverage is adequate and needs no correction. Those who have know better.

I go through the veteran's administration and like it. No problems and they do a good job.

I live in Florida.  I like my health insurance.  I liked my previous insurance in South Carolina better, but I chose a plan that best meets my needs.  I look for a balance between premium, deductibles, co-pays and co-insurance amounts. Since I am at an age where I may need more medical care, I chose to pay a higher premium so that I won't have a deductible to meet or an oversized co-pay when I do need services.  It seems like illness or injury never happen at an opportune time.

I like mine; it covers pretty much everything medical and dental, but the one thing lacking is coverage for eyeglasses.

I have BCBS and its overall ok. My only complaint, not really about them, is that certain other hospitals, Docs etc don't accept it.

Too funny. They do the best that they can. I know plenty of people that utilize the V.A. to get their meds but have purchased additional coverage because the V.A. does not employ the most skilled or experienced of physicians.

Glad you enjoy sucking off the teet of socialized medicine.

What would Howie Carr say about this?

Pennsylvania resident.  I have UPMC and it's a good plan.  I always make sure that my docs are in the UPMC system (other wise it will cost me more) and I always check to see if I need pre-approval for testing.  I had a ton of tests done last fall and everything was covered, so no complaints.  Previous to this plan I had Select Blue, again, no complaints, I had major surgery a few years ago and everything was covered.  I know vets who refuse to go to the VA, absolutely will not go there.

This!!

Speaking from experience, when my husband and I were both completely healthy, we had no reason to think of our insurance and thought it was fine.  When he was diagnosed with cancer, slowly, as tests came, treatments came and surgery came, the insurance company was a complete bitch to work with.  Some tests were covered, some were not.  Some tests were deemed to be unnecessary by insurance, while Dr's felt they were.  Insurance had no qualms denying him of the care he needed.  It was just then we realized our insurance sucked!!!  It was also then we had to refinance our home to help pay for tests insurance wouldn't cover.

What angered me to no end was I faithfully paid my insurance premiums.  Catastrophic coverage.  Then had to fight for coverage and my husband's life.  He was scared, I was scared for him, and angry too.  It's not til you really, truly, absolutely need it that you find out just what you're up against with insurance companies.

Thats not to say I don't realize people on medicare, medicaid, and VA aren't having problems, too.  I think health care that starts getting expensive leads to ways to cut expenses.  I think when your health care is demanding more expensive treatment, no matter what branch of coverage you have, you're heading for an eye-opening experience.

My best advice to anyone is, you can't avoid whats to come, but you can keep yourself as healthy as you can in the meantime and hopefully you'll be strong enough to endure if something does happen.

**Editted to add....As far as liking our insurance today, my husbands on medicare now and hates it.  He has to jump thru hoops for very test the Dr's order (and he has to take some major tests every 6 months til he's declared a survivor of his cancer).  My daughter and I are on Fla states health insurance program (United Healthcare).  Her and I are basically healthy beings, so no hassles for us yet.  But I know what I would expect if something were to happen!
