Hi everyone,

Flipping through the television stations, I found the Christian broadcasting station. There's a fellow playing accoustic guitar, and a a girl is playing one of those african instruments that is one string, played with a bow, a gourd attached. Between songs, they talk, and it is this quiet, peaceful, gentle kind of loving announcement. Like Mr. Rodgers on kimchee. I recognize the tunes from when i was a child. There is something familiar and soothing about the music. In the USA, the television shows I saw were very much shouting and full of shame. This show (It's called "I Love Jesus") is sweet.

You know, Mr. Rodgers was a minister. His message was so full of love and acceptance.

I believe Garrison Keillor (of a Prairie Home Companion) must also be a Christian and uses his show as a forum to get his message of love and understanding out as well.

Why can't more Christian leaders be like that?


(as an aside - I watch the Buddhist station as well. Sometimes the monks' chanting can lull me into a meditative state.)

Any thoughts?

I agree; many of the Christians that get the most press are "all Paul, no James" types.

as an aside, I enjoy Keillor because he's coming from the same Lutheran communities I grew up in and there are a lot Lutheran "in jokes".

I also enjoy listening to Tibetan chanting.

Many people disillusioned with religion tend to concentrate on the evil acts of man done in religions name instead of the religion itself.

Most religions and most people try to live in grace with tolerance of those that don’t agree or believe.

There is much good done in the name of religion and rather than the cause of strife in this world it may be the limiting factor that has allowed civilization to flourish despite the base nature of man.

That's true Butch... I remember when I came to peace with Christianity. There was this little old lady who was so clearly in league with the Almighty that I just never took offense when she said, "Miss Sunshine, I'm praying for you."

I love all those sweet gentle songs that have come out of religion. Don't get me wrong. A good, rousing rendition of Handel's Messiah is pretty fabulous, too. But there is a reason it is sung only once a year. The rest of the time, I'd rather here In the Garden or Shall we Gather at the River...

Sweet music straight from the heart with charity and love is one of the best gifts the Lord has given us. It lifts the spirit and brings back memories of those we’ve loved and lost.

Why should more or all or any people.... "be like that"?

People are individuals. People should be able to express themselves.

Each Human is individual work of art.

This is an excellent example of how "CHRISTIANS" try to make other people CONFORM to their ways.

Wow what did ya do belladivine?--to be awaiting approval alla time?

I loathe simpering music for the most part. I would rather here the deep down soulful blues black folks make to God. Although that whole plight makes me really angry and I feel it is more guilt motivated. I am not questioning the love and yearning to know and be with God but there are many dark twists that are not okay with the dynamic as well.

Christian stuff tends to annoy me very much. I love God so it is not that, it is that hand holding benign smiling, denying undercurrents that I cant stand.

I am not speaking across the boards some so-called Christians are super cool. It is so polarized though and false feeling, lacking depth. Add to it that some of the most evil people on the planet call themselves Christian.

Yeah I guess. I loathe the word, Christianity, it sets up all these gross synapses for me. I think quite a huge amount of it is a crock of crap though too.

Bottom line to me it is about God and the individual's trip with Him. I am including the four parts of God. It all goes together and so much of history is built on a load of shit that people try to pass off as truth and it scrapes me so the wrong way. Sometimes nice people buy crap and dont/havent yet realize it, me included.

It is a shame that fanatics seem to be the face of Christians today. It just is not true. The church on my corner is like most in America...Just normal people with faith socializing and enjoying their common beliefs.

I do understand the way you feel however. For me...my God my faith my beliefs are very personal to me and I define them ...not my church. I believe this is the way it was at the beginning and they way God wants it...personal between he and I.

i still love listening to the gaithers and old groups like that.....that music takes me to a place that was peaceful all the time......sometimes i wish i was still that innocent.....

Purely for entertainment purposes some sunday nights I watch that Jack Van Impe guy and his wife ("This is what sin does to your hair") Rexella.
He keeps quoting bible verses by the number; "this is proved in Exodus 112, Mark 215, Vinny 7, and Rocco 48!"
The guy is a machine! "Mark 12, Paul, 43, John 88, Nunzio 26, Bubba 18, Paulie 56!!!"
You'd think he was reading off sports scores!
