I'd love to give you the best advice possible but since I hate the game I rarely play it. Therefore I haven't really worked out all the odds.
All I can do is give the basics. Treat it like a game of 7 card stud (or however many) but everyone has the same up cards. Each and every actual poker hand is still five cards so that leaves 47 cards in the deck. Of them you will see some of them in the middle. In normal stud you get to see quite a few of them, but you don't have such an advantage here. Yes others have the advantage too, but not all know how to use it. When thinking of the needed card to make you a good hand, keep the cards that you can't see in mind, and remember they might not be in the pack anymore, but in someone's hand so you won't get it.
One thing I can say to any novice gambler is don't be afraid to fold. DO NOT stay in the game for the fun of it, if you got shit cards cut your losses. The most successful poker players (if you really can call holdem poker) have no compunction against folding. Agreeing to lose one battle could win the war so to speak.
Holdem is played slightly differently here and there so I can't really get specific unitl I know just how they are running the game, for example are the bets fixed or can you bet what you want ? Certainly they charge for every card you get, and in any form of poker, if the first card or two aren't helping you to build a strong hand, get the hell out while the getting's good. Always remember math, spending $50 on a 10% chance to win $100 is a sucker bet, and the house as well as the other players will prey upon that weakness. Don't gamble with your gut, use your brain. Literally make your brain act like a computer and try to figure each hand, in fact each card for it's merit. In normal poker I would say alot more, like always go for the flush, and things like that, but in holdem everyone could have a flush and then it comes down to high card. Similarly if noone has anything, high card wins. So I can't say always go for the flush in that game.
Now if you were talking jacks or better I could probably really help, although it would take some time. Even in that simple game there are many variables. You have to consider who is dealing and your position at the table. If the bet amount is not predetermined there are a few tricks there as well, as well as if you have openers, whether or not to open. And that is a simple game. Holdem adds too many variables and most people are relegated to using sheer luck to win, which doesn't work as well as skill. In fact that is the reason I don't like holdem, because it is too hard to figure the whole thing out, so as such for many it is simply a game of chance, like playing the numbers. Try not to let it be that way, try to understand the numbers and the odds.
In any game of poker there are real odds and pot odds. Real odds are the actual probability you have of winning the hand, while pot odds are based on what the winnings would be if you win and how much it requires, in any betting interval, to stay in contention. Your main decision is whether or not to stay in or drop out. Do not feel it, but rather think it.
That's the best I can do right now because as I said I don't like the game and therefore didn't put alot of time into studying it. Only the basics apply as far as I am concerned right now. And it is like been said : know when to holdem, know when to foldem. There is no shame in folding and the biggest mistake people make in any form of gambling is to stay in too long. Remember the money you save by folding a few times might keep you in the game long enough to win the big one. There is no pride, jealousy, shame nor anything of the sort no matter what action you take in any given hand. That is one of the more difficult things to grasp for a novice gambler.
I hope you win the pants off of everyone at the table (figuratively of course) but if you do the prime advice I have is to NOT GO BACK. Like Bobby Sue ala Steve Miller, take the money and run.
To add real quick, another thing I don't like about holdem, with everyone using the same up cards, everyone needs the same cards in their hand to win. Do not forget that and don't forget that if they have the right cards you ain't getting them. And of course they will not tell you unless they bet like idiots. If you do get good cards, sometimes just pay for the card and check raise if it is allowed.
