cpK69 -> No Purpose (4/18/2010 8:54:28 AM)

It’s a thought I can only consider contemplating; past that, my thoughts freeze. I can’t fathom the idea.

The topic came up in a thread recently, leaving me wondering; if someone does not believe life has purpose, what motivates them to do… anything? What keeps you in this existence, if not purpose?

To be or not to be– that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And, by opposing, end them. To die, to sleep
No more – and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to – ‘tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep
To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause. There's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life.
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
Th’ oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of th’ unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered country from whose bourn
No traveler returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.—Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remembered.[1]

My purpose? Destiny?

The first step is for me is to not be crazy.
After that get a small piece of land.
Experiment... Grow, Develop.

I wish to be content and sustainable. And Not be a bane to the earth. None of this living against nature. You cut her down and she comes back full force.

With nature, content in my designs of sustainability.

Ah, yes; fear of death. Forgot about that.

Because I know that time is always time
And place is always and only place
And what is actual is actual only for one time
And only for one place
I rejoice that things are as they are and
I renounce the blessèd face
And renounce the voice
Because I cannot hope to turn again
Consequently I rejoice, having to construct something
Upon which to rejoice

TS Eliot, Ash Wednesday

AWAKE, my St. John! leave all meaner things
To low ambition, and the pride of kings.
Let us (since life can little more supply
Than just to look about us, and to die)
Expatiate free o'er all this scene of man;
A mighty maze! but not without a plan;
A wild, where weeds and flow'rs promiscuous shoot;
Or garden, tempting with forbidden fruit.
Together let us beat this ample field,
Try what the open, what the covert yield!
The latent tracts, the giddy heights, explore
Of all who blindly creep, or sightless soar;
Eye nature's walks, shoot folly as it flies,
And catch the manners living as they rise:
Laugh where we must, be candid where we can;
But vindicate the ways of God to man.

Alexander Pope, Essay on Man

I think its possibly more than that CPK - fear of failure is key I think. If you feel you have a purpose or set one for yourself, you set yourself up for the possibility of failing in that purpose? If we stay within our humdrum everyday lives and live them without purpose then we are relieved of that burden. I think Hamlet is here debating himself about what he should do, knowing the crime against his father and the duty on him to remedy it - in contemplating what might happen if he looks to his duty, (his purpose), then he realises that though he cant get out of it he recognises that his fear of failure will certainly be his undoing - eventually he resolves to take action rather than live in regret and dishonour or kill himself.

Do you believe your purpose was planned or chance?

Here are my few favourite quotes about purpose:

A useless life is an early death. ~ Goethe

Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love. ~ Rumi

My mother said to me, "If you become a soldier, you'll be a general; if you become a monk, you'll end up as the Pope." Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso. ~ Picasso[/code]A useless life is an early death. ~ Goethe

I don't believe my life has a purpose. I do, however, have:

-senses that can be stimulated.
-chemical production centres that can make dopamine, endorphins etc.
-people who I love, and whose happiness makes me happy.
-dreams and desires and hopes for the future.

None of those things are a sense of purpose, but they all motivate me to experience and achieve to the full.

So, you live in a tree or cave and eat your meat raw, kind of a thing?

DesFIP -> RE: No Purpose (4/18/2010 11:37:32 AM)

I'm not sure we can know our purpose until afterward looking back. What you think it is now, and what you actually did judging from ten years later will be totally different. As it should be.

It has taken me many years to learn that my purpose in life is to learn. After life? Well, I'll find out when the time comes.

I agree this is likely true for some, possibly even many. I wonder though, what of those who say they know exactly what they want to be when they grow up, and actually do just that, until they can no longer?

And then there's me... I think it could very well take me a life time, just to be compitant enough to accomplish my purpose... I'm gonna be pissed if I get there just in time for 'game over'.

So I got to read it twice, without having to go back to the top. *giggles*

It's all good. [:D]

This resembles my perspective; to live is to learn.

To reach the end of the lesson, take the final exam, and have there be nothing... just doesn't make sense to me.

A little of both Kim.

On one hand I am the summation of all of the things I have experienced in life.

The other hand tells me due to the amount of information that is incomplete I can never have as much control as I would like.

Now the right foot has direction. I want to experience more life. I want to create solutions for people. Major Solutions.

The left foot is not home at this time. Please leave your name and number and we will return your call. BEEEP

Perhaps not, but can you learn to accept that you have the proper amount for any given time, in accordance with what you have learned up to that point; along with the fact that sometimes, you will probably have to remind yourself of what you learned?

That sounds like a very honorable goal to me.... How good are you at hopping? [:D]
