Brain -> Dying Breed - Who Killed the Responsible Republican? Bill Kristol, of course. (4/18/2010 7:23:58 PM)

The Republican strategy polarizes the majority of Americans and, that means it has an outcome that hurts American democracy.

Dying Breed - Who Killed the Responsible Republican? Bill Kristol, of course.

Do you remember the Responsible Republicans? In the 1980s, small herds of them still roamed freely around Washington. In 1982, they stampeded over Ronald Reagan's veto of the largest tax increase in history to mitigate the fiscal harm of his 1981 tax cut. In 1983, they converged on Capitol Hill to pass a package of tax increases and benefit cuts recommended by the Greenspan Commission to keep Social Security solvent. In 1986, they followed Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson to pass bipartisan immigration reform legislation by a large majority. In 1990, several were spotted with President George H.W. Bush (the Responsible one) at Andrews Air Force Base, conspiring to reduce the deficit.

Somehow it's alllllll going to be the libruls' fault, though. Someone will be along shortly to explain the whole thing to us.

I agree that the republican party has lost its way and the same should be said for the democrat party as well. In fact, according to a poll that just came out not too long ago " http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20100419/US.Government.Distrust/ "   which shows 80 percent of Americans have lost faith and trust in the federal government.

I think it would be maniacal  to blame the insanity of the federal/state government(s) only on Obama and Pelosi but also George W. Bush and his goons as well. But you should also take in to consideration that the people get the government they deserve so it's our fault for being apathetic and careless to what our politicians have been doing over the past 20 years or so.

I disagree that the Dems have lost their way.  They were for social programs and still are.  I suspect that their program is not as popular as before, but they are not inconsistent.

The GOP, however, is cobbling together a weird new platform that includes a belligerent foreign policy, massive spending on antiterrorist programs and curtailed civil rights, deregulation of business, lower taxes, and ballooning deficits.  Their aniigay stance is splintering.

The tea party is an incoherent version of what the GOP used to be.

Are you kidding me? There was a time when the majority of Democrats had social conservative views; they believed in limited government, small taxes, the constitution, and the ability of the individual. Now the Democrats are more to the left than ever trying to instill distribution of wealth, forcing this nation to move further away from the constitution, and they continue the same policies as Bush the second after complaining about every thing the man did while in office.

I would agree that the republicans lost there way. They aren't anymore conservative than the democrats that they claim to hate.

The tea party is a true conservative movement. But, I believe  they are in the process of being infiltrated by the Republicans as a means to boaster their failing policies and to manipulate the masses like they did during the Bush years. Nothing like a different side from the same coin, eh?

But too each their own.

I find the tea party movement to include many people who have no clue what the real issues are and have no desire to learn.

I would argue that the majority of any people in any political movement would fit this characteristic in same way or another. However, it is shown that the majority of the tea partiers are in fact educated, own business of their own, and or own land of their own according to http://www.benzinga.com/general/225924/poll-tea-partiers-wealthier-more-educated and http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2010/04/cbs-poll-finds-tea-partiers-better-educated-and-better-off-than-average-americans.html. (I can't wait for people to blow this out of porportion and say things like "they're all white, corporatist racists that are being paid by big corporations)

you are free to argue as much as you like. but, as a movement, you wouldnt be even close. The Democratic party knows exactly what they want and how they intend to get it. The republican party, at the moment, is just a party of "no", but then again, it is a strategy. The tea party movement is born from misinformation, down right lies, and incredible story plots from fantasy land to stir a group of illinformed people into a simmering mob. one day, it will boil over.

The tea party will boil over because they will be  over whelmed by the republicans and democrats. And yes, the Democracts know exactly what they want: power. Either way you look at it, we loose as a people.

Thats your opinion, again, you are entitled too it, What i have seen lately is all parties ready to implode.. and explode. And guess what the catalyst is for these erruptions? Obama. Now, ask yourself why a lone man has that much power to upset all the powers that be in all the parties.

WantingToServe11 -> RE: Dying Breed - Who Killed the Responsible Republican? Bill Kristol, of course. (4/18/2010 10:50:22 PM)

I would argue that the catalyst of the eminent implosion of this nation goes back way before Obama was even born. If anything, he's a product of his environment which was created by radicals and fanatics of the 1950s through the 1970s.

The root causes may go back... the catalyst is now.

Well, I admit that I should have said seeds rather than "catalyst." So you are right about Obama being a catalyst.

I am so fucking happy to have come of age in the late 60s -early 70s. Hooray for the radicals and fanatics! And fuck the little crypto-fascists who suck the shrivelled dick of 20 mule team dead asslicker Raygun who had the CA national guard target and kill a college kid in Berkeley.

That's too far back for me to know about.  I was born in 1956.  LBJ essentially created the modern social programs in the 1960s and called it The Great Society.  Carter didn't leave much impression on me and I assume that he supported the social programs as well.  Clinton will be remembered more for fiscal restraint than any ideology.  Gore is responsible for the Dems being identified with Green issues, although it's always been a part of their leanings.

Please share which Dems you consider to be limited government and small taxes ones.

Moonhead -> RE: Dying Breed - Who Killed the Responsible Republican? Bill Kristol, of course. (4/19/2010 8:29:38 AM)

Carter took a fair stab at that those. he was pretty keen to reduce government spending, but most of his attempts to do so were blocked by vested interests in both parties.
