NervousGrrl -> What are "munch" gatherings like? (4/19/2010 2:29:06 PM)

We're moving soon to a place where there is a munch that meets every month in a hotel conference room. That sounds pretty cool, and my fiance and I both want to go. Sorry if this has been asked before, but what can we expect?

I'm especially curious because we are both in our early twenties and I'm worried we'll be out of place.

What are some things to keep in mind when going, and maybe unspoken rules in this community that we wouldn't know as newcomers?

The few I've been to have been pretty much a totally vanilla gathering where people happened to have the shared interest of BDSM. I'm pretty vanilla and I didn't find the situation weird or threatening at all... just a bunch of normal folks talking about a shared interest. At least where I lived, thats what the munches were like. The "play parties" were... more adventurous. We never attended one of those.

Insofar as "rules", general politeness worked fine for us -- just the normal social courtesy that one would expect everywhere.

A munch is a long kept BDSM secret used to trick noobs. There really are no munchies.... they are a farce, a fabrication perpetrated to lure you into what you think will be a safe environment. In reality, as soon as you walk through the door, you will be mobbed, stripped, blindfolded and bent over and tied to spanking bench. Then all the Dom/mes will take turns anally violating you while submissives laugh in your face and pee on you.

A munch is a social occasion, usually held in a public restaurant.  I've been to one that was held in a bar.  It is NOT a fetish party.  It is NOT for play.  It is a bunch of like minded people to get together and socialize.  Some munches are lucky enough to have access to a private room in the restaurant.  Many meet in the restaurant which means the subject of the chat is confined to mostly vanilla things.  Heck, even with a private room we chat about the weather, vacation, sicknesses, etc.  People are normally asked to not wear fetish items to a munch so no one draws attention to the group.  Remember, what you order must be paid for by you.  If your funds are low it is okay to order nothing or just a cup of coffee.  This is by no means a free lunch on someone else's ticket.

Munches are a great way to meet people.  At one of the munches we go to there is a play party later that evening, however, people have to attend munch several times before being invited to the private party.   However, most of the munches we've attended had no play party that night.

As to age, you may find all ages there.  We've had those who were just 18 as well as those in their 70s.

Rules are mainly those that would apply to any gathering of people.  Don't touch someone without permission.  Don't assume all females are submissive and all males are dominant.  Don't ask questions that are too personal.  Some people are very careful who knows their real names or occupations.  A munch is not a pick up joint for no strings attached sex.  If you see someone outside of munch, don't run up to them and greet them as Master Stephen or whatever their name is.  I generally do not greet people who appear to be with family or friends when outside the munch.  Usually a meeting of eyes is enough to convey a "hello."

A munch is mainly just a fun place to sit down and spend some time with like minded people.  It's nothing to be scared of.

A lot of people like them. I personally don't like them at all. I prefer carefully selecting the people I'm going to spend face time with. As always, YMMV.

as has been stated munces are usualy in a public place and is a way to meet some of the local folks that are in the lifestyle. before going look them up on the web and get some basic info on what when and where so you wont feel out of place. these are a great way to meet folks and get invites to other events. also look for demos and such to get more info on how some play is done.

What everyone said about munches is true  (well, except the jailhouse dance part). I've been to the monthly San Jose Monday Munches, the monthly Palo Alto/Sunnyvale Wednesday munches, and the Southern Cross Weekly Friday munches ... and, well, the formula seems to be just about the same, more or less, as described.

About the only things not mentioned so far are you might expect, for some strange reason, the more heavyset of the D/s crowd (I'm not sure if that's just my personal experience on the sporadic evenings I've been to them or if it's a trick of my imagination) ...

Also expect these munches to be in the evening (the Southern Cross Munch at 6pm is a bit on the early side if you ask me) ... and expect them to be in a side room or out on the sidewalk patio ... and expect the waiter to be surprisingly good (not sure why that would be a thread amongst munches but it appears so to me) ... and expect slightly more men than women ... (but if you're a guy, you're already used to much worse 10:1 ratios not in your favor) ... and expect most of the women to arrive either as a couple (either kind) or as the self-appointed munch organizers (again, dunno why women seem to lead the pack) ... expect most ages to be up in the forties and fifties with a smattering in the twenties and thirties ...

In addition, expect some munches to be slightly formal where a "hi my name for now is joe and I work in a button factory" spiel is asked of everyone (e.g.., San Jose Munch) or more conventionally, a request to simply "introduce the new members to the old by anything you wanna say or not say" to set the newbies more comfortable.

Anything else I missed?

Ask the organizers of that particular group. Its not rocket science. If you wanted to know what to expect at your local quilting bee, would you ask a bunch of online strangers, or would you call a contact number for the local quilters and ask them? [8|]

GinoVega -> RE: What are "munch" gatherings like? (4/19/2010 11:36:51 PM)

That depends. I've found myself calling a place asking questions about what their establishment or group of whatever kind is like and they have told me what I wanted to hear and I end up there and come to find that it is far from what I was told

FFS man, you took an oath to keep this secret ;-)

crazyml -> RE: What are "munch" gatherings like? (4/20/2010 1:14:23 AM)

Hey NervousGrrl,

It has to be said that munches can vary - as with any group of people, there can be cliques and politics so in my experience some munches are more friendly and welcoming than others.

So I'd say go along.. and if you meet a couple of nice people, and you enjoy yourself then all's good. If it feels a little odd, then don't give up - different munches often have very different atmospheres.

azjojoba -> RE: What are "munch" gatherings like? (4/20/2010 2:13:11 AM)

They are mostly a bunch of people who gather in one place to talk about things like the weather or whatever else groups of people talk about. Maybe movies or what happened on TV or sports.

If you enjoy idle chat with strangers you will like munches.

sunshinemiss -> RE: What are "munch" gatherings like? (4/20/2010 2:13:11 AM)

They are full of posers and weirdos. Except the gay ones. Those are pretty cool.
