OrpheusAgonistes -> Who are you? (4/20/2010 6:18:31 AM)

The thread jbcurious started about the Interests list made me start thinking about the various ways available on CM to represent oneself.  I've always been interested in questions of personal identity, and, like all deep philosophical questions, the issue becomes even more fascinating to me when I have work I really ought to be doing instead.

Obviously, the best way to get to know somebody is through direct interaction--email, IM, phone, face to face meeting, &c.  But let's put those aside for a moment, and consider the three ways we have to represent ourselves in full public view:  public profile, journal entries, message board postings.  I know that I treat all three of these categories quite differently, and I'm curious to know whether anybody else is conscious of doing the same.

The personal statement on my public profile is deliberately bombastic.  It's probably the closest representation of my baseline personality.  I feel that people should be aware upfront that I can be something of a preening jackass and a sesquipedalian egoist.  People who are not put off by that side of me may be interested in getting to know me better, and people who are put off by that side of me are better off being put off from the start.  The public profile statement is probably the Cliff Notes version of what it's like to know me over a long period of time.

Journal entries vary from mood to mood and from urge to urge.  I'm more likely to talk about specific urges and interests in journal than anywhere else.  I'm also more likely to talk about what I had for breakfast.  Journal entries seem most suited to blowing off steam and highlighting very particular predilections and enthusiasms.  I'm not a huge fan of sitting down and just making a big list of everything that turns me on, because any list that's composed in a single sitting is going to be woefully inaccurate and deficient.  Journal entries feel more organic.  From reading four or five journal entries, you get a pretty good idea of the general shape in which my thoughts are arranging themselves for a specific period of time.

Message board posts are the most fun, but they're also probably the least accurate representation of my personality in the sense that I tend to be on best behaviour.  I generally try to play nicely with others, and to remember that there are real people attached to the screen names.  There is a more tangible audience on the message boards--less a sense of just broadcasting a signal out into space and seeing if any intelligent life picks up on it.  I tend to dial down the polemics, and I'm also far less likely to be particularly open about odd urges because I've always found it a bit gauche when people make the "I CAN HAZ  BEATIGN NOW MISETRESS PLZ" posts.  Part of me enjoys a nice train wreck, but I prefer to show up later and comment on the carnage rather than buying a ticket.  I'm essentially far more tactful and toned down when posting on the boards than anywhere else.

I'm just curious to know how other people feel about the various ways of making oneself known on CM.  Which is the most useful to you?  Which is the most accurate?  How much of "you" (whatever that means) do you think you convey?

My profile is hidden so that eliminates profile and journal entries. As far as the forums are concerned my body of work here is also not an accurate reflection of me as a person mostly because I am rarely on my best behavior here. I am a much nicer person in real life than my forum posts would suggest.

I'm someone that never combs beaches, goes to flea markets, has garage sales or plays ultimate Frisbee.

In general, I think journal entries are a reflection of how we see ourselves, profiles represent the way people want others to see them, and forum posts (over a period of time) reflect the way they really are. Journal entries tend to be dialogues with ourselves, profiles tend to be carefully worded resumes and mission statements, and forum posts are the casual conversations where we let our guard down and show the real "us." If I'm trying to get the measure of someone, I look at all three as different pieces of the same puzzle, much like the three blind men cooperating to figure out how an elephant is put together - one of them describes the trunk, another describes the ear, and the third places his hand on the massive flank and deduces the size of the animal. Together, they get a pretty good picture of what an elephant looks like.

And it's the same with profiles/journals/posts. Put all three together, and you usually have a pretty good idea of who they are. As long as there aren't any glaring inconsistencies between them, which in and of itself tells you quite a bit as well.

See, now I would argue that that is a very accurate representation of who you are as a person. That tells me volumes about you. Much more than most profiles would.

Personally, I'm the other way around. I don't take anything I say on these forums very seriously. There are other message boards where I do put a lot of thought and feeling into what I say, because i really value the dialogue on those boards, but Collarme is not one of those forums. Here, I usually just dash off whatever happens to pop into my head, and move on. More often than not, I don't even remember what thread I posted in ten minutes later, and even if i do, I very rarely remember what I said. I make no effort at all to be deep, or meaningful, or show anything of my inner self here. In  so doing, I probably show a great deal of who I really am, but I feel no investment at all in how i present myself on Collarme, and even less interest in who the audience is. It's just a time killer for me.

Louve00 -> RE: Who are you? (4/20/2010 7:05:03 AM)

I should probably hide my profile, but I have nothing to hide and I'm always up for friendship or pvt (amicable) talk, if someone wanted to take it to the other side.  I'm not looking to represent myself as a prospect for anyone, though.  I was introduced to CM by a friend and started reading the boards in a voyeur like way until someone posted something that I felt a "great" need to respond to [8|].  I've been responding to things on occassion since, whether its a fast reply to something I didn't read fully, or maybe its as you said it so well, "Part of me enjoys a nice train wreck, but I prefer to show up later and comment on the carnage rather than buying a ticket."

While I have roleplayed before, I don't think of these forums as roleplay or an attempt to portray myself as someone I have fantasies of being. So I guess you can say the content of what I post is all me...like it or not.  I don't normally play favorites, either.  If I agree with you, I'll agree with you.  If I don't, I won't.  However I've found that most people I agree with I consistently agree with and most people I don't agree with I consistently don't agree with.  There have been exceptions though.

Annnnd, while group acceptance is what we all want ultimately, I'm not all that into popularity contests.  And contrary to what some may think, I don't take these boards personally.

????

I don't think I've ever seen you post anything that would suggest you're anything but a very nice person. I've seen you disagree with people, and sometimes take a strong or even aggressive stance, but I've never seen you even come close to crossing anything that looked to me like a line.

So, yeah - you ain't foolin' me none. Gots to try a little harder there, bub, if you want to convince me you're a jerk!

That's reasonable.  Left to my own devices, I can be kind of a dick, so I tend to make an effort to be a sensitive and supportive or whatever on these fora because I know how emotional people can be when they're being open about deep, dark urges.  If I'm talking with people about books or movies or sports I expect them to have very thick skin.  Here I try to try to not be offensive until I've decided that either the person I'm responding to has thick skin or that I don't care if they have thick skin or not because I'd really like to be insulting to them.

When I read your profile, my hit was, "He's uncomfortable writing this, and when he gets uncomfortable, he talks with bigger words."

Why allow your cleverness to get in the way of your intelligence?

Panda's right.  You seem like a nice guy.  Also, even though your name is a play on Don Imus, as soon as I see "Dom" I automatically think of Dom Irrera, who also seems like a nice guy, so there's that association.  Dom Dimaggio was probably pretty nice, too, although I don't care for the Red Sawx.
