housesub4you -> What is the best way to do this??? (4/21/2010 3:06:46 AM)

I am wondering what is the best way to have a live video feed on a web site.  What I am thinking of doing is putting up a live camera on my farm to show some of our animals (cougars, alligators, etc) but I really do not know how.  Or a camera that takes pictures every 30-45 seconds that you can access off our web site

Should I set up a laptop for the sole purpose of  running the live shot's, what type of camera should I use.  I have been told, everything from cheap web cameras to very expensive security camera's.

I have talked to some people at local stores, (bestbuy, etc) and they have no idea.

You can email me on my profile here if you know how to do this type of work and are in the Chicagoland area

I can't begin to answer your questions as technologically challenged as I am, but I was wondering about those cams that people have to keep an eye on their nannies or others in their home?

Good luck.

Ask this question on www.mrlandlord.com.  Lots of the landlords there use webcams to remotely keep an eye on their property.

Yup, the security racket is probably the way to go. Even ten years ago they had sets of cameras and a special capture card that will take all the inputs. You could then access them on the web even via a laptop. Now you can probably even do it on a cellphone. What you can do now is probably alot more than even I suspect.

Best Buy and all them are sort of dweebs, geared for "regular" folk. Things that are out of the ordinary are not their bag. You might try Global Computer. If you like I might be able to find the direct number to my personal rep there, but that may not be necessary. One caveat about them though. Make a new email address to get rebates. If you have to go through onrebates.com to get the check, NEVER give them your main email, they wrecked one of my favorites. They NEVER stop spamming. Other than that they have some really good deals. I have found it very difficult to beat their prices and I have bought quite a bit from them. Other than the spam problem they are pretty good.

Then it's a matter of getting hosting and bandwidth. Live video feeds eat bandwidth and it is not free. Imagine the bill youtube gets every month. You are also going to need the proper software, which may come with the security system. Doing what youtube does is not quite what you want if I read it right. They have stored files usually in the flash format, to go actually live is a different story. And wherever this originates from is going to need an extremely high speed internet connection. Most end user ISPs do not even have a fast enough interface. I'd say at least a T1 minimum. I could be wrong, but if you get alot of traffic I will certainly be right.

I think one to ask around here would be ThatDaveGuy, what I can say is only the basics, he has demonstrated much superior knowledge on such subjects. Give it a day, maybe he'll pop up and have more detail.

All I got for now.
