Frankly, if it were MY 14 year old daughter that was being persued by a pedophile, I don't care what civil rights or laws are violated to get him the hell away from her!  In fact, I'd probably end up in prison myself for what I'd do to him myself if I got the chance.

No, it's not entrapment for reasons already stated by ArtCatDom and as far as this not being a Military State.... keep watching, it may not be long if the folks in DC get their way.

Not even close.  The key distinction between a legal sting and entrapment is whether the LEOs in question suggested the illegal action to the perp or not.

For example; if an undercover officer comes up to me and asks if I want to buy some drugs and I buy some from him, that's entrapment because (in theory) I might not have thought of buying drugs if he hadn't suggested it to me.  If the undercover officer just hangs out in the right area, looking like a drug dealer, and I approach him and ask to buy drugs, then I'm validly busted.

Putting fake minors online as bait for predators bears no substantial difference to the 'bait car' programs used to catch car thieves in many cities.  A desirable vehicle is left in some parking lot, waiting for a thief to come along and get caught stealing it, but nobody approaches a known car thief and says "Hey, why don't you steal that one?"

I am very concern about our kids today, and I really don't think a pedophile should  have a trail.

I am not saying that this is wrong, but it is odd that this aspect of the case was not reported in another newspaper. I have read several accounts of this and not one mentions this. If it is in fact true, this man is a real sick individual and I hope he doesn't set foot outside of prison for a good long time.

Am I the only one that sees the bigger affront here?  This guy swore an OATHE to protect this nation.  To do WHATEVER HE COULD to secure our safety!  That makes him soooooooooooo much worse than the average scumbag pedifile!  He should be shackled to the wall for the other prisoners pleasure and given only enough nutrition to keep him alive as long as possible!  DEATH IS TOO GOOD FOR SOMEONE LIKE THAT!!!!!

Nope... I say that he gets put in prison in the general population and have him deal with the other criminals inside. It is a well known fact that people that abuse children are not looked on in a positive light in prison.

While I agree that his oath should hold him to a higher standard, what is the difference between a priest that abuses children and a government official? The crime is no less abhorrent then a carpenter down the street doing the same thing. The major difference in this instance is the fact that this is national news and that the man was put in a position of trust which he misused. I am not sure that I would say that this is much worse than other cases of abuse.

I am not sure that he should be held to a higher standard than anyone else, but the idea behind the title of the thread is that this is beyond despicable in any number of ways. When people of authority violate the law it creates disrespect for the whole system.

I mean how would you feel if the guy with his finger on the nuclear button was a dry drunk and occasionally fell off the wagon? Would you be comfortable with that?

Oh wait...

When Scalia become a SCOTUS Justice I was glad because I thought that we would then have a strong opinion in support of the Constitution. Then there was the whole appointing Bush president fiasco, his various conflicts of interest being exposed, and then there was that "take it up the ass" thing the other day. Now the guy just looks like a thug and an asshole - corrupted by power. His opinions are worse all the time. In 2000 the Constitution might as well have been toilet paper.

I guess it's always been this way and why Thomas Jefferson's political views are always relevant - not the Jefferson was a saint either. And maybe that's the whole point - no one is a saint, everyone in power should be under intense scrutiny all the time.

Giving this guy a pass at Homeland Security just shows how flawed and politically motivated this "anti-terrorist" shit actually is. How can these morons protect us when they can so easily be infiltrated by an undesirable themselves? Yeah, good going guys...

The system is flawed in that they hire humans to do the jobs. It is not the fault of partisan politics that allowed this cretin into that position, it is an oversight that is made every day in every city, in every country. Humans are flawed, the system was created by humans and therefore reflects the same flaws. An oversight of this magnitude is no more shocking than the exposure of a police force that is riddled with corruption. I feel no more or less safe than I did before this incident. I do not trust most people in positions of power merely because of the track record of people in power.

Having something like this exposed isn't a shock to me. It just isn't.

Oh... I am still waiting for the explanation of the "lightbulb moment."

C'mon, while they are violating all of our rights all over the place they cannot security check this guy's background enough to discover he is a sexual predator? I just don't buy that.

Most serial killers are people that everyone thinks are nice people. No one ever suspected that they were mass murderers. Most predators are clever and hide what they do very well. This still isn't the earth shattering revelation that some have said it is. Maybe I am too damn cynical for my age, but I have come to expect disgusting and corrupt behavior from politicians. Or maybe, just maybe, I have a valid basis for my expectations.

Then if I understand your position these guys are okay to seek out and capture terrorists because the fact they cannot identify a sex predator in their midst is not an indicator of ineptitude.

I'm glad we cleared that up.

If he doesn't have a trial, how can we be certain that he really was a pedophile?

Also, if he has no trial, how would we know that anything was done?  Sentences are a matter of public record... sounds a lot better to me than just taking some other DHS press secretary's word that "we dealt with it."

So? There are many who hold positions of power that have 'dirty' little secrets that they hide daily. Some get caught, some don't. There are people in positions of power everywhere. No one person should be held to a 'higher standard'. All should be held to the same standard.
