Hello kanina,

So, you are saying that the things that are true now were true then and that we should use today's norms, standards, and realities to make decisions about that time?

And... you might want to check on that whole "lady in Hebrew" thing.

best,
sunshine

I did check and there were many version on the origin's name, i personaly do not believe that mary had a roman origin but that its just me...

What i meant is that were a popular name back then, i think and i could be wrong, and that it is now for different reasons... And we should not judge history by the thoughts we have now i now that

my english it not very good   sorry...

being mary hebrew has i believe thats the origin i found this text on the web:
quote:

Historically, Jews did not have permanent family surnames at all. Within the Jewish community, we used patronymics, such as David ben (son of) Joseph or Miriam bat (daughter of) Aaron. Names in that form are still used in synagogue and in Jewish legal documents such as the ketubah (marriage contract), but are rare outside of the religious context.

I'd like to thank everyone who has replied.
On the discussion of the names history, it's just as likely that the name Mary is a derivative of  the egyptian 'miryam'(or miriam) - but it's also likely that wasn't really their names but more a description of what they were (mer/mir = 'to love' - yam/yahweh = 'he who is') so mary  in that case would be 'One loved by God' or 'beloved'.
Just slipping that one in there too.

The complete (as it has been unearthed) text of the Gospel of Mary.

This and the other gnostic texts are remarkable to me as they have been cast aside for political reasons, and yet, have shaped and informed the New Testament for the marked reason that they were not deemed politically attractive. Or worse. I'll not characterize.

Fundamentalists and born again Christians embrace what has been deemed to be "The New Testament," yet these are these are the same folks who disparage the Catholic faith that made the decisions.

Good grief, how to reconcile?

IMO, Mary is a cultural and religious archetype. She represents variously the mother or the whore, the daughter or the disciple. She has evolved throughout history in every area where the Catholic church converted the local populations, for a good example see the Black Madonna of Eastern Europe -

And the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico.

In Europe, donĀ“t know how is in the USA, We have lots of  places of worship for Saints, and Our Ladies of this and that, etc, and many of those places were places of pagan cults...  Actually many churchs carry symbols of clear pagan origin, as well as pagan festivities... Actually Christ born in the same day as Krishna, and at least an egiptian deity, and some others and lived similiar points in life...

Sorry for the off topic...

That is pretty much unprovable.  Krishna was allegedly birthed in spring/summertime.  Jesus was allegedly born in the fall/autumn (no - not chirstmas day).
