Might depend on your age. My roommate was told that the only reason women went into engineering was for an Mrs. degree, in '77. I read in an EETimes comment to the annual salary survey (mid-80s) that "women are too emotional to be engineers" (hoo boy, guess there were a whole lot of cross-dressers where I worked...let alone the CEO of Cypress Semiconductor!) I heard similarly stupid lines from an engineering classmate in the early '90s, along with the story of a tenured engineering prof that stood over the only woman in the class, during the final exam, and asked her why she wasn't home taking care of her husband and kids (told to me by a guy who was in that class.) None of those guys would have the balls to to that to any male minority student. After awhile, you just get tired of lines like that. I think the best solution would be to simply punch the guy in the nose like any other fellow would. After all, we're overly-emotional sorts, with no sense of humor.
