On the way to a sales appointment today I stopped in at the bank.  I was yapping away on the phone so I was not paying attention to what I was doing.  I locked the car, got out and started walking towards the bank before realizing I had forgot My wallet, which I left in the glove box.  I went back to realize the mistake I had made, leaving the keys on the floor of the car, and of course the spare key was in My wallet.  Naturally.

Well, silly Me had to call a tow truck to come rescue Me.  It amazed Me that in 30 seconds he had the door open.  How safe and secure do I feel?  $35.00 poorer, I went to My sales call and could not make the sale because they did not like where I had to install the alarm panel because of the design of the house.  They were convinced that the "other guys" were going to dig through the ground for free to give them exactly what they wanted.

GRRFFF.

Anyone else have a similar story to share?

A freak of nature recently caused me to lock myself out of the car. ::that's my story and I'm sticking to it::

We have auto door locks and as usual, I pushed the button to lock the doors when I stepped out. It was bitter cold and very windy, so I set my purse on the front seat, with the keys in them, so I could put my coat on.  Taking a step back from the door, the wind choose that moment to bluster and push the door 'just' closed. Since my purse was in the car and my cell phone was in my purse with the keys, I was rather stuck. I had to go into the store and, having zero money on me ::also in my purse:: and use the payphone to call Himself collect. His first reaction was.. along the lines of, you need to pay attention to what you're doing, how did you lock the keys in etc. He caught a cab and I waited in front of the store. This was in the middle of his work day and his first words to me.. "Do you know how much trouble you're in?"

My response, of course was.. "None, Sir!"

That took him somewhat aback and he asked me if I could explain to him how I figured I was in 'no' trouble.

"I'm a damsel in distress. You are my Knight in Shining Armor who's come to rescue me. It's the job of the Knight to save the damsel, so how can I possibly be in trouble?"

He agreed.. and we lived happily ever after. ::chuckles::

Well that story cheered Me up.  [:D]  The good thing about your story is that it was not a lack of you paying attention (but next time put the purse on the roof.  lol [8D])

I am going to have to figure out a new place to store My spare key.  I hate wasting money.

I do sympathize with what happened. No one can feel dumber than when you lock your keys in the car. It happened to me a few years ago and I figured out the perfect solution to the problem. In most blue jeans there is a small coin pocket, normally on the right hand side pocket. I have three things in there at all times: Two guitar picks and my spare key to my car. The odds of me losing my pants and not noticing are slim... I rule nothing out though. Wallets can be dropped, spare keys in magnetic boxes placed on the car are risky but losing your pants? Doubtful. Even if you must carry a separate key ring for the one key, it is still worth it.  Why is it when we do something like this our minds instantly remember when the door clicks shut? It could have happened a split second sooner so we could catch the door from closing... but NOOOOOOOOO. It is a conspiracy. I am not sure by whom, but I have my eyes open.

Dumbest one I pulled like that was to lock the keys in the car, while it was still running....luckily I am very proficient in getting into a car with a clothes hanger

Yes, that is a brain-dead maneuver, but you are not alone in that, looking at the number of locksmith companies in business these days.

That's one thing I miss on the newer model cars....in my college days, I could "coat hanger" my way into a locked car in about 30 seconds, lol.

Last time I locked my keys in the car was at a golf tournament and yes my clubs were still in the car too. I only had 45 minutes 'til my tee time. I called AAA and they were there in 15 min, and opened it in a few seconds for no charge. I agree, it is way too easy to break into a car with the right tools, but on that day I was glad.[:)]

Happened to me once when I was using a rental- grabbed lunch, left the car with the key in the ignition and turned on.  Someone in the company sent an email but since it wasn't MY car I didn't pay any attention.  A half hour later it struck me and I had to call the rental people to get it open.

Last summer, my boyfriend and I were driving from MD to TX to get him moved into Austin before school.  His transmission blew on a Sunday about a half hour outside of Nashville (thankfully as we were pulling into a rest stop).  He locked his keys in the car as we went up to get info on a tow truck.  Luckily the tow guy was very nice and got the door popped.

AAA is the way to go.  I joined one year ago, and got my money's worth.  In the past 12 months:  I had to be towed when my transmission went out, and I called them to change a tire after I ran over a deer (I kid you not, I ran over the carcus of a deer and blew out a tire, far away from home, at night).  They were courteous and prompt each time.

I have a habit of never locking my car doors, ever. One day, my daughter was about 2 months old, I went to the grocery store, and for some reason locked the doors  . After shopping, I opened up the back door, placed my purse and keys the seat, put my daughter in her car seat, locked the door and promptly shut it. Embarrassment took a back seat to pure panic at that moment. To top it off, the store had no pay phones inside or out, and my cell phone was in the car. I ended up having a bagger from the store call a lock smith for me. Needless to say, I never locked my doors again after that.

On many occaisions while walking down the street I coat-hangered a car for some equally brain-dead person.

I'm glad to hear I am not the only one who managed to lock the keys in the car while it was running.  It's a very special talent!  *Wink*  Unfortunately I am not good a getting into it with a clothes hangar or any other tool.  It took 5 hours to get a locksmith (I did this, of course, at 8PM at night).  Surprisingly, that car idled for more than 5 hours and used very little gas.  I now have spare keys all over the place.

I did lock My keys in the car while it was running once.  I was installing a stereo system and I was testing out the subs.  I can not remember why I locked the car, but the most brain dead thing about it is that I had 500 watts of stereo blaring when I hit the power lock switch.  By the time the tow truck arrived I blew an amplifier, but My car was still running. lol

It cost my dad more than 35 bucks for someone to come pop the lock on our car. you got off easily

ok, how many times has anyone locked themselves out of the house/apt??? i'm up to 4!  My neighbor got a key after the first time.  Second time, tho, was 7 am, on a freakin Sat, jeesh, why the woman still talks to me is beyond me.  Don't even ask about the car!  i have spare keys all over the darn city!  lol, life is good, if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at........ok ok, some, but it's not nice :)

I've somehow managed to lock my keys in my vehicle 4 times.....3 times with it running! One of those times i did have a spare key with me, but it was in my coat pocket.....which was in the car. My boyfriend at the time was not pleased at having to leave work and bring the second spare.
The one time i locked my keys in my truck when it wasn't running, i had just parked at my carport at home and the second the door was closed i realized that the key was in the ignition. The spare key was in my apartment, which didn't do me any good since my apartment keys were on my key ring in the truck. i ended up having to call the maintenance people, who charged me $20 to get me into my apartment so that i could retrieve my spare truck key.

I'm so very pleased with my current car. The doors won't lock if the key is in the ignition. Of course, that doesn't completely rule out it happening again, but thus far i've never left the keys anywhere else but in the ignition. I don't have a spare key, i should probably have one made.

I recently learned that the police won't unlock cars anymore. I also learned that when you call a certain Sheriff station in a nearby small town that you get the answering machine....

It seems that the greater the sense of urgency and speed, the more likely we are to make foolish mistakes.  One dark and stormy night I was returning from the grocery store, parked the truck on the side of the hill, with the lights on and the motor running, and locked the door.  Since the car and apartment keys are kept on separate rings, I was able to call Triple AAA.  The tow truck guy showed up in about 10 minutes in wearing a bright yellow rain slicker, hopped out, unlocked the door and hopped back into the tow truck.  That was the one time I was not asked to show the card or sign any paperwork.
 
And I agree that Triple AAA more than pays for itself.  Every spring I purchase two yearly memberships, one for Myself and one for My Mother.
 
And yes, I sleep easier at night because of it.

Another chastened member of the Locked Myself Out of the Car While It Was Running Club. Dues fully paid up  -- to AAA. I also leave the lights on by mistake. I've called AAA twice in the past couple of months.

My current car doesn't let me lock the door from the inside -- to lock the driver's side door, you have to use the key on the outside, which has been effective in keeping me from the habit. Unfortunately, it won't shut the headlights off for me or send off an alarm if I don't do it after I open the car door.
