In my case I want no one to call me Goddess or Mistress. I dislike the term Goddess and don't wish to hear it. Period!
The term Mistress is not to be used by anyone other than my owned boy. Until I own someone the choices are Ma'am,
Miss Sue or Lady Sue, anyone of which is acceptable.

Lady Sue, Thank You for that insight and it is a start - in that Mistress implies onwership but a Goddess is perhaps more detached and aspirational

They're just titles. You'd hafta ask those who like them, why they do and what they mean to them. I don't like either of them.

I'm fairly new to BDSM, I could be wrong, but my understanding is that Mistress is a title (a way to be addressed), and Goddess is a style of play (ie. being worshipped).

As with most things, it's really all about personal preference. There's not really any other difference, and it is of no more import than just that.

Welcome to the boards jen.

Actually there are no official titles here so the best thing is to just call people by their username.

Much like MsLadySue, I don't want anyone calling me Mistress other than a boy I cherish and allow to call me this. And even then, I prefer Ms. or Miss.

Those who like to be called Mistress by others that don't belong to them are often ProDommes or Dommes that belong to a community which is high on protocols.

As for Goddess, it's just another name that someone can use and I don't hate it as much. I had a past partner who called me that an it was just natural for him to do so and I found it sweet because I knew what he meant by it, that he worshipped me.

In the past, submissive men I've dated have called me by my first name, Miss, Ms, Goddess, Mistress, honey, sweetie, darling, ma chérie, mon amour, sweet cheeks, you name it! As you can see, I'm not very high on protocol. I tend to let them call me what they are inspired to call me and usually it's just normal every day vanilla stuff but they switch to Ms when we are playing.

The only thing I despise being called is Ma'am. For me, this is a name for little blue haired ladies or southern belles, neither of which I am.

Mistress? I can live with that.
But Goddess? Seriously GODDESS??? What the hell would I be doing in a rank that high??!! I'm just a human!! Or a TigerDragon if I try hard enough! But if I am so 'amazing' to you that you consider me a 'goddess' you really really need to go out more!

My one and only Master and I are not on the same rank. Hence why I tend to call him MASTER. Are Master and minion on the same rank?
Considering someone as simple as me a 'goddess' only confirms the subs IQ level is below the 50 mark. I'm not that 'amazing'. Really.

We humans are the superior race. I am a human, so are you. We are EXACTLY THE SAME. I am not a speshul snowflake.

Given that I am pagan, if someone calls me a Goddess, he had better be very clear about the implications of what he's doing.

Otherwise, Mistress, Ma'am, or my Lady will do nicely. In some ways, as long as he clearly means respect and lives the words he speaks, then the title is a minor matter.

I'm not into being called Goddess either, I've never wanted to be on a pedestal as usually there's only one way down from there ... falling off! Unlike some others, I like the term Mistress but only from someone I've accepted as Mine, similarly with my Lady. In the interim, I like to be called Ma'am (I prefer the apostrophe but when I created My nick here the system wouldn't let Me have it!), or Lady Jay. The one I really dislike is Miss ... years of teaching school and having "Miss! Miss! Miss!" yelled at you will do that! I have been known to throw the odd piece of chalk saying "No I WON'T Miss!" LMAO.

I, personally don't like the term mistress.. It always makes me think of being "the other woman".

Shame! We're, deeply, deeply incompatible then, LA. I love that word. It gives me the hots like no other.

Goddesses are higher-maintenance. They eat far more chocolates.

The yahoo reference dictionare describes it as

mis·tress    (mstrs) KEY

NOUN:

  1. A woman in a position of authority, control, or ownership, as the head of a household: "Thirteen years had seen her mistress of Kellynch Hall" (Jane Austen).

  2. A woman who owns or keeps an animal: a cat sitting in its mistress's lap.
A woman who owns a slave.

  • A woman with ultimate control over something: the mistress of her own mind.

  • A nation or country that has supremacy over others: Great Britain, once the mistress of the seas.
Something personified as female that directs or reigns: "my mistress . . . the open road" (Robert Louis Stevenson).
  • A woman who has mastered a skill or branch of learning: a mistress of the culinary art.
  • A woman who has a continuing sexual relationship with a usually married man who is not her husband and from whom she generally receives material support.
  • Mistress Used formerly as a courtesy title when speaking to or of a woman. Only one definition, out of eight, is negative. I think it Mistress is quite an honorable term. But, it does imply "skill". Maybe "Miss" is a better term for those who have not mastered their skills.

For me, Goddess is sacrilegious, and I automatically refused to consider anyone who used it in their profile or their initial message, when I was looking. People used to call me "Mistress" a lot at Ren Faire, so I don't have a strong objection to it. The title my submissive playpartner uses and my previous submissive of five years called me is "Milady," which I prefer. There are several others that I don't have any objection to, either, but "Goddess" makes me really annoyed. In general, if I'm not involved with someone, and we're not at a high-protocol event (vanilla or kink-oriented) where everyone is using titles, I prefer people not address me by title at all.

Either one is likely to seriously piss somebody off if you use it and you don't already know for a fact that this is a title they personally prefer.  When in doubt, just be normally polite and courteous.

Personally, I dislike both titles a lot and prefer not to use either.  Goddess is outright blasphemous and disrespectful to folks who take the term seriously on a religious level, and Mistress sounds like you're a bimbo or a kept woman seeing a married man.

There's a difference between nonconsensually using women as props to play out the sex fantasies in your own head, and actually being respectful and enough to care what she wants to be called.  It's wise to learn that difference.
