Tantriqu -> new trojan: saved by bad spelling (4/24/2010 5:46:46 PM)

Dear CO'ers:

There's a trojan/malware going around: I think I picked it up on Youtube searching for a vanilla video:
it snuggles into your Vista systems tray and tries to convince you start your virus scan: however the warning has two misspellings! Didn't stop to memorise, but at least one 'you computer', not 'your'.
Even though I didn't allow it to start, it still infected, and created a series of faux warnings and error messages, pop-ups and outlook hijacking [to its own fake
'av.ex' anti-virus software, viagra and porn sites], and most alarmingly blocked my own viral scans and said there were no system backups since last year [which I do religiously] but fortunately OK with a Run command, running my twue security programs which detected it in a lot of paths, but did a system restore juuuust in case.

Then read about it on malware sites.

Man, the things sociopaths come up with.
Bahstids.

Hope this helps prevent some infections.

Bonne chance, and let's be careful out there!
T.

Tantiqu,

I think this also happened to me. The pop up looked like a McAfee pop-up but only had black and white printing. I also started it and luck would have it, McAfee caught it right away. I don't know where it was picked up, but I'm glad it was blocked.

Regards,
dovie

I'm still dealing with the remnants of malware!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I used MalwareBytes.com and it did help, but jeez there are all sorts of weird little problems still happening.

I just had a virus that I got from trying to watch TV online. It went crazy on my computer and I had to call people in to fix my puter. It wouldn't let me delete the file and it wouldn't let me run a system clean-up. It kept throwing up the same kind of warning that my puter was infected and if you clicked on the popup, it took you to a place to buy their internet security stuff. I was like no way am I giving money to the people that gave my puter the virus to begin with.
