I have been posting the Tao Te Ching in my CM journal. Some of you have been reading it (and welcome to!) But I put up the last post from it yesterday. As it is long and kind fill up the journal, in a few days I will be deleting it a post at a time. Hope you have all enjoyed it :) fergus

The book of the way. It is eastern philosophy, and it is elegent in its simplicity. However, I really can't explain it ... in fact, if you go back in my journal and find the first entry on the Tao, Lao Tzu's own words say something to the effect of "The tao that can be explained in not really the Tao." fergus

The Tao Te Ching unlocks the door to the mysteries of life to those who already know it...which is a kinda interesting point in itself .... you have to wonder whats the point of it being written at allgrin cuz its nothing to philosophise over, the more you would try and work it out probably the farther you would get from its meaning hehe..when you read it all you can really do is nod your head and murmer "yes"...or just think .."ive got no clue in hell what this is talking about". I think its interesting that most of the ancient texts werent actually written by the person credited with its origin..they hardly ever wrote anything down...something in that too grin

It seems that many of our most memorable and important stories and philosophies are passed through the spoken word. However, the Torah has been written the same (exact) way for over two thousand years. Hm. Go figure.

Uhh, not to piss in anyone's Wheaties, but there are three problems with this. 1. You're using Stephen Mitchell's translation, and he doesn't even know Chinese. 2. i like stephen mitchell's translation. and i adore the tao te ching. i'm usually never without a pocket copy, but i loaned mine to someone :(

The tao means to me.... and keep in mind that I'm dense.......harmony, and balance, and acceptance. Things that escape me, like trying to juggle on a rocking ship in a storm......I have so far to go.

Not sure I understand what those sites have to do with anything. All of you have been on CM long enough to know that the mods don't accept posts containing copyrighted material. For what it's worth, and aside from the legal issues, I think it's inherently reprehensible to copy someone else's work without citing him or her. Well, having deleted the first entries, perhaps I deleted the reference, anyway, it will be down in a matter of days. As for Mr. Mitchell, I have bought many copies of his book over the years, given them to friends that have needed them, and encouraged others to do so. Forgive me if I have caused any trouble. fergus

Just a note: I have Stephen Mitchells translation and have had a chinese friend who teaches Chinese in University look at it some years ago who said his translation was pretty good.

OOOOOOOOOOOOK. I'm not going to get into the merits (or lack thereof) of Mitchell's translation. My only point was that you can't post it without citing him--and you probably can't post it on here at all.

Lordandmaster, are you a moderator here? If not, I'd suggest applying for the job. Alternatively I might recommend you shut up already and just report behaviors that offend you on the site to the proper authority. I don't think anyone cares what you have to say about these matters. A further alternative might be that you actually contribute something interesting and useful instead of just trying to police everyone. I mean, what...you are sitting over there wearing your security guard uniform and gesticulating madly at the computer monitor with your billy club? What gives?

Then why do you keep harping on it? Anytime I notice someone posting text written by someone else without citing the source, I am going to make a comment about it. I have a thing about plagiarism.
