There was a thread on this movie before started by Aakasha, and my take on it was completely different from most. I saw the main theme of Punish Me as repression, and the twist was having the femdom as the central protagonist -- as opposed to a domly man and "sexy woman." In a way the film inverted the closeted gay Republican politician of today who does "despicable," "unthinkable" things with a man --- in favor of a repressed, middle class, female, German bureaucrat. ------- From an old post: The film itself, shot entirely in black and white with no ambient sound track to cue your mood, examines what happens to a responsible, disciplined married women, getting by on repression and sublimation, when she experiences her first fulfilling d/s connection. How does this affect her marriage? How does this affect her job? What does it say about her morality --- that she violates the ethics of her job and marriage to consummate her latent passions? Can she and her husband work through this watershed moment, or will it rip them apart? Can one continue to lead a normal life after taking a bite out of the forbidden apple? I thought it illustrated rather well how strong our own impulses for repression, fitting in, and being responsible control and bury kink desires. At the end, the film truly leaves you wondering whether the main characters came out liberated or buried by their own devastation. The imagery of prisons, barbed wire, iron bars, red tape, lonely bridges, abandoned garages, and dark corners suggest desires with nowhere to flower. Unsatisfying vanilla relationships, offer little consolation on top of misunderstanding, lack of fulfillment, and resentment. Lastly, of course, is the old car the boy and father restore ---- is the car to be towed away to the junk yard or it to be restored? We must ask the same of the movie's 50 yr. old female heroine.
