So do Vulcans, but they prosper, too.

Yes, but they have to remind each other to do it.

Not if you live in Montreal. The one thing that I'm not proud of here is there are still a whole lot of smokers, but that is because of the European influence to a great deal, not exclusively, but yeah. Smoking still has some charm here, but thankfully, that is changing.

And drinking... well lets say, our drinking age starts at 18 and our bars start to close at 3am. We drink.

But I that said, I think Canadian life is less stressful than American life, unless you life in Toronto. That is just a presumption that I have.

So "America, love it or leave it" means I have to move to Europe?
Munich's a cool city.

There are still a lot of other cultural differences, and I suspect that the ethnicity of the Canadians (and thus their genetic makeup) is more homogeneous than that of the USA citizens.  I wouldn't be surprised if risk factors such as smoking, drinking, etc. were different as well.  There is a lot more land per person in Canada, which I assume would translate to lower pollution levels.

I'm not saying that the results are not due to health care differences - I'm saying that that's just one possible factor.

For the curious (or those procrastinating – *cough*) the actual (provisional) paper is available online. There was an effort to control for variables other than health-care between the two populations: namely, results from the survey about health-related quality of life were adjusted for "major determinants of health, including body mass index, smoking, education, gender, race, and income." Similarly, the reason white-only populations were compared was to eliminate variables to better focus on the potential effects of differing health care policy and levels of social and economic inequality.

Based on those controls, the authors argue that "the difference in health between the two countries seems to be associated with substantial differences in access to care as well as substantial differences in social and economic inequality." They don't really make an attempt to quantify the correlation, though.

In fact, they pretty much admit the results mainly have implications for future research: "The Joint Survey is valuable in that it provides a comprehensive and direct comparison of the health in the US and Canada. Yet distinguishing among the potential explanations for the differences in health between the two countries would require longitudinal data. Perhaps it is time for Canada and the US to contemplate a joint longitudinal survey."

Everyone on my fathers’ side of the family is American.  I have family in New York, Ohio and California. I want them to have better lives.  It has nothing to do with my feeling superior.

Well I don't know about the other Canadians, but you are going to have an ulcer by the time you hit 40 if you don't quit worrying so much about your neighbors. Wouldn't be a bit surprised to see lots of HBP meds in your future either.

But if this link gives you one more reason to feel superior over everyone else. Do enjoy[:)]

We all want everything in your little world to be sunshine and puppies, even if there isn't a whole lot of reality there.

You have to love it. Spoken like a true Montrealer....Rest of the country is ok but Toronto...it sucks! :)

Don't put words in my mouth. I never said Toronto sucked. I simply said that they, unlike most of the rest of the country, have this high stress lifestyle. They have chosen the rat race where as we have chosen a more relaxed way of living. Given a choice between Montreal and Toronto as a place to live, I pick Montreal. That said, I visit Toronto often and have a great time when I'm there.

Living in toronto, I have to say you CAN lower your stress levels, as long as you dont have to travel downtown on public transport or drive down the DVP or the along 401.

I know LadyAngelica. It is just cute to see. Being American and having lived in both places the Traffic on the Metropolitan and the 401 seemed the same to me :)

So do sea turtles.

That's in the health care bill---to turn us into sea turtles.

Sarah Palin will be warning about the Reptile Transmorphing Squads soon.

I live and work in the centre of the city and I commute by public transport with my iPod in place. Life is beautiful in Montréal!

We are all human and no one is superior or inferior to anyone else but you keep making it up if you like.
It seems to me since you brought this up you are the type who thinks America is number one and superior to everyone else - whatever works for you I don't care.
