I drilled down through the over 2400+ possibilities for my real name and, upon finding the one record that has the correct address, find that I am the homeowner of a $1Million US house, I'm married, I'm childless, and am both a child and parent at the same time. Yay me! The only major pieces of information that is true about me in that profile are my contact info (which can be found on just about every white pages directory out on the 'net), my general age, and the fact that I'm childless. Everything else is quite the fantasy. I did find this disclaimer to be quite telling... quote:
Profile data is derived from marketing surveys, consumer records, and public data sources and is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. The data provided to you by Spokeo may not be used as a factor in establishing a consumer's eligibility for credit, insurance, employment purposes or for any other purpose authorized under the FCRA. From what I can see, and based upon my own entry in their database, this site might be useful, but not any moreso than any other similar site already out on the 'net. What does concern me is the fact that this site seems to be the first of a new generation of search engines that datamines social networks and attempts to attach photos, videos, and whatever else to a person. In my case, there were a ton of photos that came up on my profile, supposedly posted in various places on the 'net. Yet, not a single one of them were actually mine (and some were of pretty questionable content). In this case, those looking for possible "dirt" on me would have a field day with many of the photos, and if it really mattered to me, I'd have to spend uncounted hours, and possibly money, trying to clear my name of the evidence that isn't mine. For this reason alone I'd like to delete my name and info from this site, yet I could not find such a link anywhere on my profile page, tiny print or not. Does one have to actually join this site in order to delete that info? [... edited to add ...] I went through Spokeo's "Help" system to delete my entry, though after doing so, I was still able to get to it by searching for other family members. I'll check later to see if my deletion takes a while to be purged from their caches.
