Hard to say- for a miracle i think i would go to god, for a headache - i would go to the medicine cabinet.... anything in between would be a coin toss.

I'm going to guess that they aren't Catholics priests. I've not heard that kind of preaching in Catholicism.

You are quite correct ... that was not a Catholic teaching .... in fact ... Catholic teaching tosses out the bible prior to Jesus ... as like greek mythology ... so for them evolution is perfectly acceptable ...

You'd think, but there are adults in the video that believe this as well. I can respect that you don't want to watch the video, so let me share a stat in the video with you: Approximately 54 million Americans over the age of 18 do not believe in evolution.. They don't state the source of that statistic, but it isn't surprising to me.- LA

Are you suggesting that the 54 million Americans who don't believe in evolution are all like the adults in the video who don't believe dinosaurs existed because they aren't mentioned in the Bible?

Or are you saying that 54 million Americans lack critical thinking and logical deduction skills because they don't believe in evolution?

Are you suggesting that the evidence of dinosaurs proves the theory of evolution?

TreasureKY, I am not suggesting any of that. What you posted to me in an interrogatory manner was your spin on bits of information and I'm not really sure how you come to such conclusions. Do you mind walking me through your deductive process?

Others, like SeekingOwnertoo, seem to have understood mu OP very clearly. You might read it again if you want to understand what discussion I am trying to encourage.

If you want to know what assumption I have and that I'm openly willing to discuss, you might want to read this post.

He asked once why they werent mentioned in the bible. I explained that when dinasaurs roamed, man wasnt around.

*Sigh* I guess your home-schooled son never even learned to spell dinosaurs....

LOL... i always have stated my spelling sucks. Does not mean my mind does. Sad the only thing you could find it to pick on me about my spelling.

Then again, it doesnt surprise me either.

Damn straight he was home schooled from 6th grade on. Picking him up from school with an O2 sat of 74%, his inhaler "misfiled", and him a nice shade of blue sorta made that decision an easy one.

auditguy -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/1/2010 7:07:09 PM)

My policy is if Buddy Holly didn't sing about it, then I don't trust it.  This is exactly why if I ever meet a girl named Peggy Sue, I am going to be in so much trouble.

Also I blame the schools, too much test taking and too little teaching.

Do you have critical thinking and logical deduction skills in the curriculum that you teach him?

Actually, I think you missed the point.

As I mentioned in the OP, the point isn't about who's right or wrong about creationism. The point is about critical thinking skills and logical deduction.

By bolding the section that I did, I was essentially adding to the assumption that those who believe in evolution form more logical arguments and this assumption might be supported by the fact that those who have a university education support evolution.

It isn't about the truth. It is about the quality of the argument.

By bolding the section that I did, I was essentially saying "amen."

Taught. and yes, we integrated it into all his science projects, his creative writing lessons and his history.

DesFIP -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/1/2010 7:18:32 PM)

Teach children critical thinking? But then they wouldn't be so easily swayed.

Oh and my daughter's high school has since added a  required course for freshmen in critical thinking as well as in writing for college. They should not only be able to think but also express it. Radicals, all of them.

Oh and I home schooled her one year. I can spell, she can't. Does it matter? No, because for things that do matter, you use spell check.

LA, your speaking like this is present tense. My son is now 24 years old, long out of school and working on his college degree.

belladevine -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/1/2010 7:22:55 PM)

The subject line here is ccritical thinking and logical deduction.....the op then goes on to discuss religion.

WOW!!

I am a logical and critical thinker. I fail to see how religion plays a part in logic or critical thinking!

Religion is not based on critical or logical thought!!!! Religion is based soley on faith.

Religious people call them sellves faithful... faith is believing in something unknown and faith is for those who do not know.

Science is about facts..sometime studies are incomplete but TRUE science demands PROOF.

A childs mind is like a sponge. It is a pity and a shame that so many people waste their childrens minds on being faithful. There is so much good stuff to learn about.

The planet Earth has so many secrets yet to reveal. Religion teaches arrogance!!!!
Religious leaders presume to know and teach what comes after this life and in reality have little knowledge of their very own life.

Most people are too stupid to even feed themselves properly.

We as humans don't even have a thorough understanding of the oceans floors or undiscovered species.

Religion is a waste of minds.

tazzygirl -> RE: Critical Thinking & Logical Deduction Are Becoming Extinct Like The Dinosaur (5/1/2010 7:25:03 PM)

Just knew someone would come along and make all this about religion.

That's phenomenal.

However, research shows that critical thinking skills, to be truly integrated into a person's instinctual response, should be taught as of as early as possible.
