http://whatreallyhappened.com/WRHARTICLES/shoddy.php

We are already a third-world country in terms of what we make and what our stores sell to us. Our computers fail, our software crashes, flashlights don't work when you need them, Apple Blue tooth headsets fail after a week, Avatar Blu-Ray disks won't play at all right out of the box, bridges collapse, levees fail, coal mines collapse, and oil rigs explode. GM proclaims that it paid back its TARP loans, but they had to borrow more TARP money to do it. Nobody wants to buy a GM car, as they still lag way behind their Asian and European counterparts. As a nation we cannot build a better future as long as the business model is to force us to keep re-buying the present. And I find it amazing that the very same people screaming about the environment and carbon taxes seem not to understand that the constant forced re-buying of shoddy products to replace shoddy products to replace shoddy products to replace shoddy products to replace shoddy products is a major cause of pollution and depletion of the Earth's resources/snip

Most of the shoddy stuff in the US is made in China, like your Apple products.

Most computers are made of products from Taiwan, Korea, etc.

GM only has a 15-day supply of the Equinox on hand due to demand.

Bridges collapse and levees fail due to poor design, lack of maintenance, or both.  We have a real lack of interest in maintaining our infrastructure.

The US still makes stuff?!?!?

Dang, PA, my stuff doesn't fail that fast at all.  You need to not whack your stuff...

Well I am full of Shod if your statement is true.

Buy ten hammers, get the GOOD hammer. Curse, Curse, Oh snap I doubled my budget.

Entropy exists and it is fair.

I wish to build a dome house to withstand a hurricane. Arcs all around.
if I had the money for mesh nets of steel springs, concrete, huge rubber balloon, airpump......

I wish to have a car so I don't have to bicycle halfway across florida.
if I had the money for insurance, gas and the car itself.

I wish to never to skip meals again.
I wish to not sleep on the floor, or outside hiding in the bushes.

I can continue to 'wish' but I have to make it so. My current situation is better than my winter previous.

In a world full of shod,
bows a man to a dollar.

Get really creative.

Not only 'cool' it would be very functional for it deflects debris. There would be no drag.

Square houses create drag which results in turbulence within the structure. Screw you square houses I am going with pi on this one.

In florida the Home Owners Insurance is ridiculously HIGH. I would like to push that having a semi-sphere house is safer, and thus cheaper to insure.

Oh yes, I wish I had some LAND to run my research and development, experiments in sustainability...

I have a couple of books and DVDs on dome houses.   Did you know they even make them out of cardboard?

They sure have some nice floor plans and lay outs too.

A dodecahedron for you then. A REAL HOUSE WITH TRIANGLES.

I swear all we make is TRASH. Have it right out of the factory and into the landfills. It would save time and money......... I swear!

I remember the first stereo my parents bought...one of those big consoles in a beautiful wooden casing...we had that for over 25 years...it lasted through the 8 track and cassette tape years and was finally retired, still in working order, when vinyl changed to CD's. I remember when the TV was a piece of furniture again in beautiful wooden casing... and there were TV and stereo repairmen... is that even a job anymore?

At some point consumers stopped demanding quality and allowed manufacturers to dictate what we buy. It is a sad state of affairs to see nothing but cheap plastic rubbish with no craftmanship or quality.

The term is preplanned obsolescence, and considering the state of the world, I'm not entirely convinced it's a bad thing.

Sure something that breaks in a month is useless, but at the same time someone who buys a $10 CD player at walmart knows that they're getting an inferior product, and they've made the decision that buying the cheap one now is preferable to buying the expensive one later.

As far as other things...computers are the big one...it would be a colossal waste of money to make a computer that lasted for 15 years. If you don't believe me look up computer specs from 15 years ago. Windows 95 or 3.1, dialup modems, no dvd drives, laughable processing and memory...my computer now has touchscreen and the CPU is actually included in the giant flatscreen hi definition monitor, which I think is totally pro for a home PC and I hope that it's a new trend.

But anyway, you can say the same about anything...TV's? Do you want to use an analog TV? Oh wait, you can't use an analog TV anymore, that investment is wasted. Cars? Aside from things like emission tests, cars are a lot more efficient when it comes to MPG these days, especially since the price of gasoline has probably quadrupled in the past 15 years. Stereos? Well you answered that one yourself, what use is a CD player these days, who would keep buying plastic, easily scratchable copies of music when they can get pristine digital sound?

I'm not saying that everything should be cheap, and I'm certainly not excusing faulty construction, but we're definitely moving toward "cheap plastic rubbish" being the norm (and once they find something biodegradable to replace the plastic with, we're golden) at least until we reach a point where 'progress' levels off so that new technology can remain "the best" for longer than a month.

I'm not saying things need to last 25 years...but 5 years? I really don't understand this drive that people have for cutting edge technology. I had the same Nokia phone for 9 years and just upgraded a couple of months ago to a smart phone after cracking the display, my computer is 4 years old and does everything I need it to do. I can understand it for business applications, but for the average person?

I think protecting our resources and reducing landfill is more impotant then having the latest toys.

Pahunk, why not buy about 5 acres of land in the Montana wilderness, build a plywood cabin, grow your own food and get away from technology, clearly you have no luck with it so you should become a luddite
