HBO's new move, YOU DON'T KNOW JACK portrays the life of Jack Kervorkian, a staunch advocate for physician assisted suicide and medical euthanasia. I am fully in favor of such practices. We exercise this right for our pets, and we should be able to do this for ourselves or our loved ones when the moment is right.

So, what is your position on Assisted Suicide?

Note: By "qualified patients," I mean either (1) The terminally Ill or (2) Those suffering from an incurable disease that makes their life unbearable. (1) and (2) would each have to be patients mentally competent to make a rational life or death decision, aka they could not be depressed or mentally imbalanced -- while making such a choice.

Note: Polls in the state of Michigan according to the movie reported 70% in favor of Jack Kervorkian's views.

Million Dollar Baby deals with this. Great movie.

That's true. The patients in need of such care are in such a sad situation. That movie made the point in spades.

When my mother developed terminal cancer at age 91, we considered moving her to Oregon where my sister lives as they have assisted suicide there.

I am unsure how anyone could be against assisted suicide if they've ever gone through a loved one dying a slow and painful death. I have been there, and I have cried out for a way to end their suffering.

After serving his 140th patient, Kervorkian was convicted of murder and sentenced to twelve years in prison. He got out after eight (8) at age seventy eight (78).

I support assisted suicide. So far, so does everyone else that has voted.

I find the voting tally reassuring so far!! I know many folks who want to hang on for every single breath no matter how hideous, and hats off to 'em. Me, I have an exit strategy in mind.

Dr. Jack is one of My heros. I fully support assisted suicide as being morally correct and as part of My personal belief system, and I'm looking forward to this movie.

I have supported the concept long before Dr. K made it a reality. Why should anyone be forced to live out a painful and/or demoralizing existence?

The medical community are the ones who almost completely oppose assisted suicide. Why? Cuz it takes huge buck$$ out of their pockets that they can mine from their patients. The only other major group opposing it is the right wing bible-thumpers.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: You Don't Know Jack (5/4/2010 5:57:27 PM)

I have supported assisted suicide for decades.  People never realized it but it was a reality in most hospitals.   I worked in one during the 80's.  The Dr would write an order to "titrate morphine drip".  That was a euphemism for crank it up til he stops breathing.  I didn't vote because I don't think that Dr's should be the only ones allowed to participate in this.  When my Father decided to die, he chose not eating or drinking.  At the end, his wife gave him a little push with morphine.

The lady I'm caring for now has said that she wants to live no matter what.  The Dr's keep trying to write her off because she is 98 years old.  She defies them & gets better.  Frankly I'm not sure I would enjoy having her existence, but she apparently thinks it's worthwhile.

auditguy -> RE: You Don't Know Jack (5/4/2010 7:44:56 PM)

I voted for allowing assisted suicide; even though I hope I never have to make a decision like that.

What I do take a little offense too is people saying there are no legitimate reasons to be against it.  Personally, I could think of a few dozen of the top of my head, one of which is the psychological effect it has on families of the person opting for suicide.

Also some people are confusing assisted suicide with non-voluntary euthanasia, which are two very different things, with two different arguments.

Is this (CM) a skewed random sample? Maybe this poll reflects the way I worded the question?

The movie depicted JK's patients as determined and resolute about their decision. It also illustrated how there is no medical establishment set up to help them.

Pacino goes understated. JK learned that one man with no movement behind him cannot change the conservative views that run our society in this regard. Its less important in life to be right -- than it is for other people to be ready to accept changes.

I believe in Doctor assisted suicides.

Detroit is my old home town and Jack Kervorkian's attorney was also my attorney so I followed his stories closely.

I don't know that it's skewed, but I am a little surprised to see zero votes against it!

One of the saddest things for me was when I did volunteer work with people with HIV and AIDS related illnesses who chose to die at home.  One of my friends suicided alone, he waited until I had left and before the next person was due to visit so that none of us could get in trouble as we had known of his plans to eventually kill himself when his suffering got too bad.

Not entirely true; there are doctors who would help their terminally ill patients die, but there is the risk of being sued by relatives who oppose it. No doctor is going to risk that.

barelynangel -> RE: You Don't Know Jack (5/5/2010 5:53:27 AM)

I read JD Robb's In death series and it takes place in 2060ish.

They have where people can apply to committ suicide and its legal for them to do so whether its by their own hand or having someone assist them. Its not a spur of the moment concept but a legal one wherein they apply and they have it granted and there are documents legally executed. I think if people don't wish to live then who is anyone else to say they should, especially if they have a terminal disease or yes even a mental condition that will eventually deprive them of a quality life. It should be their decision as to me, only a person can determine whether their life is worth continuing. I think they should make it a legal concept and allow people to make the choice for themselves in a way its fully thought out, discussed, and identified. I think if this occurs, people will not abuse it because its not an instantaneous concept and it won't be a cry for help because of spontaneous decision.

I think the hardest thing though to determine would be that of kids and their rights in the matter. But adults, i think the should be allowed to choose to die and if they cannot do it themselves, then i think qualified individuals -- not necessarily doctors, be allowed to assist them. The thing is, not all doctors i think wuold be qualified to do so because the person who assists in this would have to be able to bear the mental weight of they helped someone kill themselves. WHich is why i say qualified individuals not necessarily doctors.

One thing i don't like in the books though, people who committ a crime and if they have one of these licences so to speak, they still are allowed to commit suicide instead of serving out their sentence. However, they can't apply if they are arrested. So its a catch 22.

Yes the books are fiction but its really interesting concept-- apply for a legal suicide.

If it is an inalienable right for Lazarus Long as described in Time Enough For Love, then it should be good for the rest of us. If we could live the life that Robert A, Heinlein envisioned for humanity, we would all be in better place with an entirely new scope of human right.

Rule -> RE: You Don't Know Jack (5/5/2010 5:11:24 PM)

I am of the opinion that medical staff ought not to participate in any euthanasia. Their job is and ought to be to care for people.

On the other hand I do support trained killers and trained psychopaths, if guided by ethical minders, to end and shorten the suffering of both the terminally ill and of hopeless cases of the mentally ill, preferably in consultation with the concerned relatives and friends of such people.
