TreasureKY -> Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow... (5/4/2010 6:07:15 PM)

Okay.  Not really gone, and not tomorrow.  However...

April 29th was mine and Firm's 4th Anniversary from the first time we emailed/chatted/spoke.  As a gift, Firm gave me a certificate to a Spa here in Atlanta.  The certificate covers an hour long massage, hour long facial, manicure, pedicure, and most of all... a hair cut and style.

Now here's my dilemma; first, I don't usually let anyone cut my hair.  The few times I have in my life, I was very unhappy.  Aside from that, I like long hair.  Or should I say, I've always wanted long hair and now that I have it, I'm reluctant to give it up.

Oh, I know... it'll grow back.  But for me, it takes a very long time.  In the past four years, I've only gained about four inches in length (my photo is about 4 years old).  That's with very conservative trims, and very careful care (no harsh chemicals, natural bristle brush, etc.).

However, now that it's reached about mid-back, I'll admit that it can be a right pain.  I'm forever getting it caught... under my arms, in my seat belt (where the shoulder strap retracts), under Firm's arms, etc.  Aside from the fact that I need a good trim right now to get rid of the "fairy tale" endings, it also doesn't hold a curl or style very well with it being this long.   It gets "stringy" looking really fast.  I'm definitely not one to go with a pony-tail or some such hair contraption when I go out in public.

There's also my mom's voice in the back of my head telling me that older women shouldn't wear long hair.  *sighs*  I'll be 48 this summer.

So... here's where I'd like some suggestions.  I'm very seriously considering using my gift from Firm to get a real haircut and not just a trim.  I just haven't a clue as to how I'd get it cut.

Required submissive disclaimer:  Firm will let me do whatever I want.  I honestly don't think he cares what length it is as long as it is kept well.

Now, I definitely won't do short, short... it'll have to be somewhere between my chin and my shoulders.  As I'm almost 50 now, it's not as full and thick as it used to be, either.  I'll probably want something curled or wavy to make it look fuller... I don't want my ears poking through limp straight strands of hair.  It does that enough right now.

It should look "mature" but still sexy.  At my age, I need all the help I can get.  [&:]

I've teased Firm about me getting one of the short "bubble" cuts that seems to be the standard for women over 65.  If I stopped coloring my hair (henna), I'd be fully white-haired in no time... that would complete the look!

lol... He wasn't amused.  [;)]

Problem is, I just haven't seen much that interests me.  Most of the models in catalogs and such are really young, and it appears long straight hair is what is popular for them.  I've checked out the online "try a hairstyle" programs where you can scan your own picture in and try out styles, but they don't have very good selections and honestly... I just cringe at the results.

Anyone seen any good styles lately that might fit my criteria?  Even not fit?  I'm open to considering anything really nice.  Pictures (small) or links would be great.

Help!

I do not have hair advice, just want to wish you and Firm a Happy Anniversary!  It is wonderful to see success stories around here.  Oh, maybe a little bit of advice....foil highlights are wonderful!   : -)

Thank you, Katy!

I figure if I'm ever going to let my hair go grey, I'll probably do the highlights or "frosted" thing to make it happen gradually.  It might be time to start doing that.

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow... (5/4/2010 6:22:47 PM)

slight hijack

A secondary thought here for all. It has been in the news the last couple days that hair (both human and animal) is being collected by salons (human and pet), and sent to the gulf region. It is being stuffed into old nylons and then used to absorb oil which is/will be washing up on the shores. It is actually quite absorbent in that respect. One pound of hair can soak up about one quart of oil.

I know there's a shitload of oil out there but it's gonna take every possible effort available to resolve that problem.....so go get your haircut!

windchymes -> RE: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow... (5/4/2010 6:30:58 PM)

First of all, congratulations :)   Has it really been 4 years already?  lol

As far as the hair, I'm kind of going through the same thing.  I love having long hair, and have been letting it grow for about 9 months now, and it was already a couple inches past my shoulders to begin with.  I color it, and it seems as though the longer it gets, the quicker the color starts to fade, and it looks dry, even though I condition it every single day.  It's mid-back now, too, and thick and hot and wavy, the proverbial mop, especially with the humidity here, and if I blowdry it, it takes forever.  I'm longing to go back to just below shoulder length....but someone has requested that I grow it long :)

For you, though, I think shoulder length or slightly longer with soft layers would be perfect.  You can do the "tousled" look, or go curly, or get out the flatiron, it would work for all those.  The biggest decision you would have to make, I guess, would be bangs or no bangs.  I just hope you don't get that "bubble" in the back with it longer at the sides.  I'm getting really tired of seeing that cut on women, lol.

KatyLied -> RE: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow... (5/4/2010 6:36:30 PM)

The best investment I ever made in my hair was buying a flat iron.  I use it every day and love the way it makes my hair straight and soft.  You can't tell from my picture because it is the old hair style.  I also grew out my bangs a few years ago and although it took time to get used to, I love my hair being longer in the front sans bangs.

lusciouslips19 -> RE: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow... (5/4/2010 6:46:34 PM)

I have had long air and short air. Mine just looks better when it is in a bob. If its fine or thin, it needs body. You can get it cut in longer layers. Past your shouders but short enough to have bounce and layers for fullness

Thank you!  Yes... hard to believe, but it has been 4 years.

Course, the cool thing is that we have two anniversaries now.  Our "contact" anniversary in April, and our wedding anniversary in December.  Amazing at it seems, Firm remembers both dates!  [:D]

I sympathize with the hot thing.  I get hot flashes and even though mine isn't nearly as thick as it once was, I cannot believe how much hotter it is with all that hair hanging around my neck and shoulders, and down my back.  It's like wearing a fur coat at times.  Firm always knows when I'm having a flash because the first thing I do is pull my hair up off my shoulders.

I love some of the tousled looks out there.  I do worry about it just looking messy on me.  Unfortunately, I'm one of those women who honestly looks horrible when my hair is a mess.  I envy those women who can get out of bed, go swimming, etc. and just look gorgeous.  lol... Of course, it's because they are gorgeous.  But me, well... I'm honest with myself; I can look pretty decent, but my hair is a very big part of it.  When it's a mess, I'm just plain homely.

My sister got one of those "bubble in the back, longer on the sides" cuts when she passed the bar last year.  It's okay for her, but just not something I'd think would work for me.  I have strong features and really need a much "softer" hairstyle.

TreasureKY -> RE: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow... (5/4/2010 7:17:13 PM)

Luscious... that's a great style and definitely something to consider.

lol... Of course, as I posted to Windchymes, it would be my luck that on me it would just look messy.

lol... I'm not so sure mine would be very absorbent.  Henna (which I use to color my hair) coats the strands and seals the cuticle.  There's just about nothing you can do to remove the henna once it's there.

But thanks for the suggestion!  [:)]

Hey pretty lady, no helpful hints on the hair from me, it sounds like you have a good idea of what to do (and not do), but wishing you and Kentucky a happy anniversary. [;)]

popeye1250 -> RE: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow... (5/4/2010 11:35:43 PM)

Well Happy Anniversary to you guys! And I'm glad you stuck around in here as I always like reading both of your thoughts on various topics!
Here's a solution, use all the other stuff on the gift certificate and give the haircut part to a homeless woman, it'll make her (and you evidently) feel much better![:D]
Treasure, it really sounds like to me anyway that you really don't want anyone messing with your hair.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow... (5/5/2010 2:21:35 AM)

happy anniversary....i get the hair thing.  i am going to be the crazy old lady with the gray ponytail who refuses to realize how silly she looks.  that day may be coming up soon the way i keep sprouting "blonde" hairs in fact!

the thing about hair is it grows back.  a lady i work with had hair to her waist and got it cut to just above shoulder length.  it looked great on her and she loved it, but now she is letting it grow back cause she just misses it.

the same lady has cut my hair for 18 years now....i wouldnt let anyone else near it.

you need to find a stylist who you trust and let them help you decide what would work best for your hairs texture and all that jazz.  and if it sucks and you hate it, it will grow back.

that or just chicken out and become the crazy old lady with the gray ponytail-

jst, who turned 48 a couple weeks ago....lol

congrats on the 4 years together....awesome!!

My advice is to talk to the stylist and tell him/her your concerns. You can change your hairstyle without giving up the length...

Treasure, congratulations! I agree with the above, how delightful to read about the sucess stories.

As for hair......I used to have very long hair and ended up, more often than not, with it tied up, braided, something. The older I got the stringier it got and just yuck!

I tried a cut similar to the photo lushy posted, but for ME, it just wasn't practical. It meant a lot of time fussing with it to avoid looking like one of the 70's/80's mullet men. Now I keep my hair pretty short.......obviously per my photos.... It is a razor cut that adds sooooooo much umph and volume.

I never had thick hair and with the passing of time (just turned 48) it wasn't getting any thicker. The style I have now gives the illusion that there is a lot more hair growing there than there really is.

Also, try doing a year of evening primrose capsules( there are others my sleep adled brain cannot think of right now )... it is one of the natural 'help you through the hormonal thing' that can, for many women, stimulate hair growth. I've been using it for about 2 months and feel like there is more up there. I sooooooooooooooooo do not want to be one of those old women with a shiny pinkish white scalp glistening through some peach coloured strands of hair!!!!!![:D]

My girlfriend has long hair and she is your age. She looks about ten years younger than her real age. When people find out her real age they sometimes tell her that she is too old to have long hair or words to that effect... even though moments earlier they would have guessed that she was in her late thirties and the long hair was fine then. An inch a year? The hair in my ears grows faster than that. [:D]

Allow me to add my CONGRATULATIONS to the mix!

I too was going to suggest long layers. I love how easy it is to style w/just a blow dryer & a round brush[:D]

lol... Somehow I didn't figure I'd get too many suggestions from men.  Even Firm is no help in this area and he has to actually look at me all day.  [;)]

And thank you for the compliment.  You've always been a gentleman that knows how to make a lady feel good.  [:D]

Thank you, Popeye.  Firm and I always enjoy reading what you have to say, too.  In fact, when we're both reading the forums in our office together and one of us laughs, the other automatically asks, "Popeye?"  You're straight shooting comments are a breath of fresh air!

The idea of donating the hair portion of my certificate is a good idea.  I'm just not sure how I'd go about finding someone to use it.  You are right, though... I'm really reluctant to let anyone mess with my hair.  lol... It's just that it's to the point where someone has to do something with it!

Thank you and happy belated birthday!

But I'm jealous because you're my age and just now getting gray hair.  Sheesh... I found my first one when I was 21.   Honestly, if I didn't color my hair, I'm convinced it would be pretty much all white by now.  lol... I look like a skunk by the time I need to color again because it's all white where my hair parts in the middle.

You are right, though... I do need to find someone I trust and who can advise and work with me.

Yep... mine's doing that "stringy" thing with a vengence.  Time has much to do with it, too.  Ever since I started working with Firm in his business, it seems like I have no time for me anymore.  I've always worked a full-time job, but having one in your home means much more than 40 hours a week.   More like 16/7.  [&:]

Yikes!  I definitely don't want the mullet look, either.  I'm definitely going to look for a cut that adds volume.

And thanks for the tip on Evening Primrose.  I'm with you... I can't stand the idea of my scalp showing though my hair.  If this will help stimulate hair growth, it would be great.  Aside from my hair, I can always use help with the hot flashes thing as I can't use HRT due to a history of blood clotting.

Honestly, that's another big consideration.  People tell me that I don't look my age.  Of course, I think they mean it in a nice way.  While a more mature hairstyle is fine, I definitely don't want to look older!

I'm not sure why it's considered so odd for older women to have long hair.  I suppose a lot of it might be because when you get older, your hair thins and has a tendency to look "stringy".  Of course, I always thought "old ladies" who wore their long hair up in a chignon or other "upswept" hairstyle, look very dignified.  My great-grandmother had hair that was probably down to her knees, but she wore it in a long braid that she wrapped up on the top of her head.  I will admit the color difference was a bit strange, though... the braid part was nearly black where the hair on her head was snow white.

lol... I think men have some weird hair growth thing going on with their ears that has something to do with testosterone.  My hair actually grows at a normal rate; about a half an inch per month.  I know this because it grows out white and as I said above, I look like a skunk if I don't color about every 3 weeks.  It's just that between trims and breakage, it pretty much doesn't gain length very fast.

Thank you, thank you!

I think you're right that layers is going to be the way to go.  It would seem that might help with the volume issue.  Just a matter of deciding on the overall length now...
