Discontent doesn't translate at ballot box

INDIANAPOLIS – It turned out anger didn't translate at the ballot box.

Voters in North Carolina and Ohio kept their incumbents while those in Indiana turned to an old Capitol Hill hand — Republican Dan Coats — in Tuesday's primaries despite the nation's bottom-of-the-barrel support for Congress and frustration with the Washington establishment.

Coats, who was recruited by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, won with nearly 40 percent of the vote, and will face Democrat Brad Ellsworth, whose nomination is assured. The candidates are seeking the seat held by retiring Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh.

Coats, 66, retired from the Senate in 1998, has worked as a lobbyist and was U.S. ambassador to Germany under President George W. Bush. He overcame spirited challenges from four opponents, including state Sen. Marlin Stutzman, a tea party favorite who was endorsed by South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, and former Rep. John Hostettler, who had the support of one-time presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas.

.......Turnout was exceptionally light in Ohio and North Carolina, a possible indication that voter anger over economic woes, persistently high unemployment and Congress itself wasn't influencing elections — and, perhaps, a reflection of the limited influence of the conservatives and libertarians who make up the fledgling tea party coalition.

Don't remember who, but someone involved in the conspiracy to found this country said something to the effect that people will suffer as long as the suffering is bearable. As such I don't see any type of third party being able to offer a viable candidate for the big chair until at least 2016. By then they should have had some success in senatorial and congressional races, starting by or before 2012. If not they have the proverbial snowball's chance in hell.

Any third party that comes up before a real grass roots effort will simply be a part of the system and will support the status quo. A truly independent party must come from outside the system, and will need alot of continued support. How do you get that support when a third of the people can't read, a third of them won't, and the rest think everything is just fine the way it is ?

The world will change when people change, and not one second sooner.

Incumbents face weaker challengers than candidates running for open seats. If incumbents faced challengers as strong as candidates for open seats, the incumbency advantage would be cut in half.

One of the differences in this period of economic downturn (for lack of a better word other than mess) is that people are now on line more than any other downturn, they are seeing, reading, and responding more. The reports of other countries and their problems show them that the US, while in a mess, isnt as bad of a mess as other countries.

These are just a few of the mainstream headlines...

US economy creates 32,000 private sector jobs in April

Warren Buffett says US economy showing real strength

New US jobless claims fall

People are still extremely nervous about the economy. Its my belief that is what the voters are watching. As long as the trends show improvement, there wont be much change at the voting box.

I dont have to agree with the links i provided, neither do you. But, the reality is, this is what people are reading, what the voters are seeing, and some may be grasping at any positive economical news like grasping at straws. As long as they have something to grasp at, the voters box wont be changing. Change in seats brings change in the government... yes, much needed change.. but if the news is reporting the economy is improving, they wont want any change to potentially disrupt that positive note.

I think the reality is people don't really want change regardless of the circumstances.

Congress has a dismal approval rating yet most people think their Senator or Representative is the exception to the rule and keep re-electing the incumbents.

Considering the economy is showing signs of major distress, and it's not being felt at the box, I guess you're wrong.

What needs to happen is that more people need to notice the complete failure of "the economy" (ie, the system, ie, fiat money and the federal reserve). They're having trouble doing so because they've been conditioned not to. For those who manage to see clearly despite this, the media is there to lie to their faces.

The people running the show like running the show, and are pretty smart. They don't intend to give it up easily.

Ah, but that is not what the news sources are saying. The major distress is turning around. That is what the voters are wanting, and what they are reading.

I can promise you that this tea party movement is only the beginning. In fact, the first sign that the conservative movement was on full strength was when the national news called the movement the largest grassroots movement in history. The tea partiers are indeed a small group, but it is another sign of how fast we are growing, since even the most conservative members of society are now receiving publicity, and serious inquiries of like minded individuals. If you looked at any other news media besides the mainstream media you would see the massive numbers of people who are protesting, but more importantly, who are now communicating with their friends and family about the dangers of socialism, and big government.

What happened in the last election, since I know you can't figure it out, was they caught us right in the middle of the movement, and there were still enough brainwashed senior citizens left to give mccain the nomination, but just barely. That's not likely to happen next time, and more importantly, we now have about 150 house members who were willing to vote for the health care plan even when it included illegal aliens, and abortion. I would say about half of those people will be gone before too long.
