Have you any idea how hard it would be to impose martial law on an armed society?

They will never use that word.  But they will shut down things.  Never using that word- heck they might even claim to do so for our carbon footprint.

I don't think so....[8|]

They already have......is it £20 billion the Germans are committed to handing over? that's the price you pay for bossing the Froggies...Spanish...Greeks etc about.....they want your money in return. The Germans have achieved more through diplomacy than they have through war...a continental European Customs Union under German leadership.....which incidentally was a major war aim in WW1.

The Germans never ever get done paying reparations.

Who can blame them?

Pretty much didn't attempt to pay them....and they had supporters in England (notably Keynes) and the US....who believed the French were attempting to ruin them for centuries to come.

For England and the US it was similar to the WW2......couldn't risk Bolshevism spreading to Central Europe....and it was a real possibility at that time.

pahunkboy -> RE: Rioting escalating in Greece, will the rioting spreak to the UK? (5/6/2010 2:45:57 PM)

They certainly did pay war reparations.

The demonstrators continue to protest and voice their anger.
The government has voted to cut public-sector salaries, raise the retirement
age for women in the public sector, and impose new taxes.

Violence in Athens after Greek austerity vote - CNN.com
It appears Greece will certainly be bailed out from the EU and the IMF.

What country will be next?
Is this a sign of the times?
Will the USA be in a somewhat similar situation down the road, if we continue to accumulate so much debt?

What lies ahead?

How low can the stock market go?

More importantly we should all remember that after three days of shorting everything and losing money, if you get the urge to put a stop order on those said short, don't.  Mother F)(*er decided to crash through the supports on the day I was out of the short position.  I hate Europe.

Countries all over the world are in a debt crisis. Spending money that isn't there has to end, and end soon. Who bails out these countries when there is no bailout money left. Make the spending that are necessary and do it quickly. The U S is next in line for big trouble.

Servant, in Greece and other countries in the E.U. they get cradle to grave benefits.
In the U.S. if you live long enough you get Medicaid and about $1,000 a month. That's nothing compared to 5-8 week "holidays", month long visits to spas for health reasons, free health and dental, killer maternity benefits, pensions etc.
Most people here in the U.S. get 2 weeks vacation if they're lucky.
I don't know how much the average pension in Greece is but it's most likely a lot more than $1,000 a month. They were talking about upping their "VAT" tax from 22% to 23% and cutting pensions by $100 per month and that sparked the violence.
Looks like they need to cut govt. spending just like the U.S. They can cut the Greeks a lot more because they "get" a lot more than we in the U.S. get!
I have a brother who has 32 years on a Boston area fire dept and he only gets 4 weeks vacation.
Greece is a socialist country and as everyone knows socialism works great until other people's money runs out.
Boy, this "E.U." thang is comming back to bite Europe right on the ass! All the people who didn't want it must be glowering now!

Not sure what countries in the EU give 8 weeks vacation and month long spa visits. Certainly not in the UK. We get 4 weeks holiday. Although we have a National Health Service (which I have to say in my personal experience is fantastic ) it is hardly free as it is paid for out of our National Insurance payments.

Did someone mention the UK

UK budget deficit 'to surpass Greece's as worst in EU'

European commission's spring forecasts put UK budget deficit this year at 12% of GDP – the highest in the European Union and worse than Treasury estimates

Whoever wins the election must make sorting out the public finances the top priority, the European commission warned on the eve of the poll, as it predicted the British budget deficit would swell this year to become the biggest in the European Union, overtaking even Greece.

The commission's spring economic forecasts put the UK deficit for this calendar year at 12% of GDP, the highest of all 27 EU nations and worse than the Treasury's own forecasts.

The country's budget shortfall was the third largest in the EU last year but will overtake both Greece and Ireland this year, according to the forecasts. Greece's measures to tackle its public finances problems are projected to cut its deficit to 9.3% of GDP.

In Greece, the situation was exacerbated because Greece's problems were masked by its connection with the euro. Otherwise, Greece's currency would have been devalued long ago, spreading this crisis out over time, rather than the economic austerity budget enacted all at once, which, no doubt, has gotta hurt.

In the U.S., the dollar would fall along with the mounting crisis, again, far before any such sudden punch. And, though some people love to draw the comparison, we aren't Greece. Nowhere even close. We are asset rich, with an overall strong economy, and thus (while yes, it's too high) able to handle our debt, with no chance of defaulting and with, so far, no problem attracting investors--in fact, T-bill rates are falling as investors turn to the relative safety of investing in the U.S.

LadyEllen -> RE: Rioting escalating in Greece, will the rioting spreak to the UK? (5/7/2010 4:56:18 AM)

Greece was exceeding the agreed limits for Euro membership for years - so was everyone else mind you, but Greece was always known to be the worst offender.

What really tipped things over the edge was the discovery of the "creative accounting" of the previous administration when the new government took over - whereby it was found that there wasnt a hole but an abyss in the public finances.

One has to feel sorry for the socialist prime minister of Greece - now known as the bad guy, because he is the one facing the music for the lies of his predecessor. I wonder what party ran Greece before and what part of the political spectrum they find themselves on?

Sort of sounds familiar doesnt it? Those who inherit a problem coming to be identified as the cause?

The US is 25% of the IMF.

So we are making this demand.  1/4 of it.

Musicmystery -> RE: Rioting escalating in Greece, will the rioting spreak to the UK? (5/7/2010 7:23:29 AM)

The only possible analogous situation I can see in the U.S. would be far right conservatives taking over and abruptly eliminating programs and spending, leaving people in the lurch like in Greece. THAT would send people to the streets.

Or when they FINALLY get that the tax cuts go to the wealthy, not to the Trickle-down Fairy.

Or that health care is in fact a good thing.
