The legality of the situation is that no public institution in Michigan may promote, host, sponsor, or participate in any program or event that violates the Michigan Civil right Initiative (Proposal 2 of the Michigan Constitution). Reading parental comments, the principles' tirade occurred a whole 24 hours after the students returned from the trip and any possible student confrontation had happened. The principle very specifically broke a law in the state of Michigan meant to protect people from discrimination. Because of that reason alone, he should be fired. It is the duty of our educators to set the daily example of upstanding, law-abiding citizens for this country's future. This is a pretty major offense. I think the fact that this was a specific group, instead of a set of handpicked students from each class, is the deciding factor. It shall be interesting to see how that is viewed in light of the law.

While I think that it would be inspiring for young men and women of colour to see and interact with very successful men and women of colour, I would wanna see these folks myself, and race wouldn't enter into it. Neil deGrasse Tyson---imagine if YDB went and got to see him, and I didnt? That guy is one of my fuckin heros. I'd be pisseder than if I didn't get to see and visit with MadDogVachon when I flew with him from Omaha to Minneapolis.

Exactly, Master Ron. Thats why i sorta understand these 5th graders reactions when the students who got to go returned. This would have been better handled by having this man come to the school.

Sadly, i agree. However, i think the motive behind it all was honorable, which is why this Principal has not been fired yet. Again, not one parent has pointed towards racism here.

Nah, there are still plenty of very good schools across this nation where the only of person of color within their walls is the janitor. As we fall deeper into decay and as the aspirations of blacks increase we are seeing more mixed schools develop. Thank God for the decay.

Are you saying that white, latino and asian students would not have benefited from meeting such a man as this esteemed scientist? Because, at the risk of sounding racist to some (and on that note, i could care less what they believe) i do believe these other students would have benefited from the experience, if for no other reason than to have it up close and personal that a black man can become anything he works hard to become. There is too much of a prevelence in the belief among the young that black men can aspire to be sports heros, actors, rappers and politicians, but not much more. A very wrong perception. One every student would be best to have pushed aside by the presence of such men as "black University of Michigan scientist"
