Why do they call it a "session"?  That seems so impersonal to me.  Any thoughts?

ok got to agree with you on this one... I hate session... not really into scene either.. makes me think of a play or movie... but i guess someone had to come up with something most feel is easier to explain sexing or beating someone with... LOL

Edited to change my own language... got pist earlier and it's showing in my post.. sorry

I can not speak for anyone else, but I always refer to them as scenes or sessions simply because we don't adhere to a D/s lifestyle, and yet it's not all about sex. He's a sadist, I am masochist...when he's 'dishing out' some pain, and I am 'receiving some' pain, it's nothing more than a scene or a session. Afterwards we go back to being who we are normally.

Because it adequately communicates what a person means.

The term session has alot of definitions  but the most applicable to me is

"a meeting or period devoted to a particular activity "

So what's wrong with setting up a time to be devoted towards a particular activity?... especially if that activity is alot of fun.

I hate a lot of scene words and phrases:

session
scene
training
working with (as in "working with a dom")
lifestyle
play
milady, m'lord, midear

Edited to add: "Session" sounds like something that has to have come out of the pro-domme world.

i don't call it a session.  Or a scene.  i call it serving my Master, or being used by my Master.  i serve him in many ways, and being used by him in what some call "sessions" is one of them.  To us, calling it anything differently seems to remove it from its context.  Being flogged by him is no less serving him than bringing him a drink, is no less serving him than waiting patiently as he works, is no less serving him than anything else i do (you get the idea).

Not everyone feels that way, however.  Some use such terms to describe sexual play and it works for them.

Why is the BDSM community so obsessively concerned with exactly what title or label or name something is called???  Something is what it is....a rose by any other name smells as sweet....what the hell is the major holy importance of EXACTLY what it is called, that suits every single person in the community???  Aren't there more important issues in the world to worry about today?

Words are personal- just like doms can prefer to be called sir, their name, master, emperor, whatever the heck they want.  Choose what resonates with you.

I use "scene" or just "we played" but whatever works for you.

Just like some women are ok with "cunt" and some find it wrong.  As long as you know what words work for you- you're good.

Why is it called a scene?
